Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive: revenue, earnings and Life Sciences performance were strong; Healthcare demand and backlog remained resilient; AST trends improved and destocking was described as ended; and full-year EPS and Life Sciences growth guidance were raised. Offsetting factors included lower underlying Healthcare and AST margins, reduced AST growth guidance, lower year-to-date cash flow, restructuring charges and the lack of expected additional tariff refunds. Overall, the positive operating performance and raised company outlook significantly outweighed the stated challenges.
For fiscal 2027, STERIS maintained total company as-reported revenue growth guidance of 7% to 8% and constant currency organic growth of 6% to 7%, while increasing adjusted earnings per diluted share guidance to $11.35 to $11.55 from $11.10 to $11.30, including approximately $0.18 per share benefit from tariff refunds year-to-date; Healthcare constant currency organic revenue growth is expected at 6% to 7%, AST growth at 6% to 7% compared with 7% to 8% previously, and Life Sciences constant currency organic growth at 9% to 10% compared with 6% to 7% previously. Management said AST should be somewhere in the 6% to 8% growth for that side of the business, expects procedural growth at the lower end of the range, which is somewhere around 3% instead of the high end of that range, which can be 5%, and does not expect any material additional tariff refunds during the remainder of fiscal 2027; all other elements of the most recently provided outlook remained unchanged, the outlook does not include Xodus Medical, and the go-forward model for Xodus reflects maintaining revenue growth in the mid-teens and EBIT margins in the low to mid-50s.
- Strong Second-Quarter Revenue GrowthTotal as-reported revenue grew 9% to $1.6 billion, while constant currency organic revenue grew 8%, driven by volume and 230 basis points of price.
- Higher Adjusted Earnings and EPSAdjusted net income increased to $286.8 million from $244.5 million in the prior year. Adjusted earnings per diluted share rose 19% to $2.94 from $2.47, and grew 13% excluding tariff refunds.
- Improved Reported MarginsAdjusted gross margin increased 100 basis points to 45.3%, and adjusted EBIT margin increased 150 basis points to 24.6%. Tariff refunds of approximately $20 million contributed 130 basis points to each year-over-year margin improvement.
- Healthcare Segment Growth and BacklogHealthcare constant currency organic revenue grew 7%, supported by solid underlying demand and continued strength in GI. Service and consumables each grew 10%, while capital equipment revenue increased 4%. Orders grew 1%, and ending backlog increased to $456 million.
- Healthcare Consumables and Endoscopy MomentumConsumables growth benefited from increased customer consumption, share gains, procedural growth in endoscopy and, to a lesser extent, a recent GI products acquisition. Management said endoscopy procedures have remained in the mid- to high-single-digit growth range and that placements of automated endoscope reprocessors have been strong.
- AST Revenue StabilizationAST constant currency organic revenue grew 5% in the quarter, with services growth of 6% on a constant currency basis. Management said September improvements continued through October, early October indications were holding those gains, and customer destocking had ended.
- AST Capacity Available for Volume RecoveryManagement said total utilization across the AST network is pretty high but that the company has room across the network because volumes were slightly less aggressive than expected. Existing infrastructure and installed capacity are positioned to handle increased demand, and volume improvement should show through to margins.
- Life Sciences OutperformanceLife Sciences constant currency organic revenue increased 18%, with capital equipment growth of 53%, consumables growth of 9% and service revenue growth of 5%. The segment delivered record margins of 44.4%, up approximately 310 basis points, reflecting improvement in volume, price, productivity and favorable mix.
- Reshoring and Localization BenefitsManagement said reshoring and localization of manufacturing are benefiting Life Sciences. Previously announced customer expansion and manufacturing plans are beginning to materialize through capital equipment orders and requests for chemistry work.
- Raised Fiscal 2027 EPS OutlookFiscal 2027 earnings per diluted share guidance increased to $11.35 to $11.55 from $11.10 to $11.30. The increase was driven by second-quarter outperformance and lower interest, and includes approximately $0.18 per share of tariff refund benefit year-to-date.
- Life Sciences Growth Outlook IncreasedLife Sciences constant currency organic growth guidance increased to 9% to 10% from 6% to 7%, reflecting first-half outperformance led by capital equipment and an expected return to more normalized growth in the second half.
- Healthcare Demand Remains ResilientManagement said it has not seen a slowdown in Healthcare capital equipment, reported a very strong order quarter for surgical products, and described Healthcare backlog as near record levels excluding the supply chain crisis period. Sterile processing data showed tray counts and consumption were up across North America, the U.K. and other parts of Europe.
- Planned Xodus Medical AcquisitionSTERIS agreed to acquire Xodus Medical, a surgical specialties products business focused on patient and OR staff safety. The acquisition would expand the Healthcare consumables portfolio and direct commercial presence in the operating room, strengthen recurring revenue and add products across patient positioning, handling and transfer, warming and operating room essentials.
- Xodus Medical Growth and Margin ProfileManagement said Xodus has demonstrated consistent growth through innovation and an effective commercial model. The go-forward model reflects maintaining revenue growth in the mid-teens and EBIT margins in the low to mid-50s. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to revenue, margins and EPS, although updated guidance will be provided after closing.
- Capital Allocation and Balance SheetSTERIS ended the quarter with $1.9 billion of total debt and gross debt to EBITDA of approximately 1.1x. The company repurchased $100 million of shares during the quarter, or $200 million year-to-date, with $800 million remaining under the current authorization.
- Restructuring Savings OpportunityThe newly approved restructuring plan covering targeted facility realignment, product rationalization and select organizational realignment is expected to generate approximately $9 million of annualized savings, with a portion realized in fiscal 2028 and the full benefit in subsequent fiscal years.
