Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. Rambus reported record revenue, earnings, product revenue, and operating cash flow; delivered strong product and silicon IP momentum; completed a $100 million share repurchase; and provided robust fourth-quarter and full-year growth expectations. The main challenges were tighter supply, elevated supply-chain input costs, modest MRDIMM adoption, and a gradual ramp for SOCAMM2, but management stated that supply constraints had not affected Q3 or Q4 results and expressed confidence in demand growth into 2027.
For Q4, Rambus expects revenue to be between $227 million and $233 million, product revenue to be between $127 million and $133 million, royalties revenue to be between $68 million and $74 million, and contract and other revenue to be between $26 million and $32 million; at the midpoint, product revenue is expected to increase 34% year-over-year and 14% sequentially. Q4 non-GAAP total operating costs are expected to be between $124 million and $120 million, capital expenditures approximately $8 million, non-GAAP operating profit between a profit of $103 million and $113 million, interest and other income approximately $6.5 million, and, assuming a non-GAAP tax rate of 16% and 109 million diluted shares outstanding, non-GAAP earnings per share in the range from $0.84 to $0.92, representing at the midpoint growth of 30% year-over-year and 5% sequentially. The company expects another record quarter of product revenue in Q4, which it expects to grow more than 30% year-over-year; 2026 revenue is expected to grow approximately 18% over 2025, including product revenue growth of approximately 24%, and non-GAAP earnings per share to grow approximately 24% over 2025. It expects to return 40% to 50% of free cash flows to shareholders over time, product gross margin in the near term within 60% to 63%, a long-term target of 60% to 65%, 2026 product gross margin right in the middle of the 60% to 63% range, and its silicon IP business around $130 million, growing at 10% to 15%, more like growing towards the higher end of that range.
- Record Third-Quarter Financial PerformanceThird-quarter revenue reached a record $218 million, up 22% year-over-year and 5% sequentially. Non-GAAP net income was $91.7 million, and non-GAAP earnings per share was $0.84, up 35% year-over-year and 10% sequentially. Cash flow from operations also reached a record $102 million.
- Record Product Revenue and Strong Q4 Product OutlookProduct revenue reached an all-time high of approximately $114 million, up 22% year-over-year and 15% sequentially. Management expects Q4 product revenue of $127 million to $133 million, with the midpoint representing 34% year-over-year growth and 14% sequential growth.
- RCD and Companion Chip MomentumStrong demand across multiple generations of RCDs, particularly DDR5 RCDs, fueled the record product results. New-generation RCDs are expected to make up the bulk of Q4 product growth, while companion chips, which were approximately a low double-digit percentage of product revenue at the beginning of the year, are growing sequentially.
- Sixth-Generation RCD Sampling BroadlyRambus stated that its sixth-generation RCD, supporting DDR5 9600, is sampling broadly with customers and is being very well received.
- Expanded Server Memory Product PortfolioThe company expanded its portfolio with an industry-leading PMIC for upcoming LPDDR6 SOCAMM2 systems. Rambus said the solution extends its server memory roadmap to LPDDR6 and supports improved memory-subsystem power efficiency for AI workloads.
- Strong Silicon IP Design-Win ActivityRambus reported a very strong silicon IP quarter, including new Tier 1 design wins for next-generation HBM and increasing strategic engagement with custom silicon makers and hyperscalers. The company also cited growing interest in PCIe controller and switch IP for scale-up and scale-out AI connectivity.
- Growing Silicon IP Business ConfidenceManagement reiterated that the silicon IP business is approximately a $130 million annual business growing at 10% to 15%, and said 2026 performance and design-win momentum are tracking more toward the higher end of that growth range.
- New Hardware Security Offering for AI InfrastructureRambus added a root-of-trust solution designed for AI and data center deployments that supports the Caliptra specification, reinforcing its hardware-based security portfolio for next-generation infrastructure.
- Strategic ChipAgents Collaboration and AI InvestmentThe company announced a strategic investment and collaboration with ChipAgents to use AI-native design flows to accelerate chip and IP development, improve design quality, and enhance engineering productivity. Rambus also stated that it is continuing to invest in tools, infrastructure, and R&D to support future AI-related opportunities.
- Successful Share Repurchase and Capital ReturnRambus completed a $100 million accelerated share repurchase during the quarter. Management said it intends to return 40% to 50% of free cash flow to shareholders over time while continuing to invest in the business.
- Strong Balance Sheet and Supply PreparationThe company ended Q3 with $777 million in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. Rambus increased inventory by $12 million during the quarter to support future product ramps and provide customers with greater supply assurance.
- Positive Fourth-Quarter and Full-Year GuidanceQ4 revenue guidance is $227 million to $233 million, with non-GAAP EPS guidance of $0.84 to $0.92. At the midpoint, EPS represents 30% year-over-year growth and 5% sequential growth. The midpoint of Q4 guidance implies approximately 18% 2026 revenue growth, approximately 24% product revenue growth, and approximately 24% non-GAAP EPS growth over 2025.
- Confidence in 2027 Demand GrowthManagement said demand is strengthening into 2027, visibility into the backlog has improved, and the company is confident in the health of demand growth. The company expects continued seasonality between the first and second halves of 2027.
- Complementary Growth Across Standard Memory and SOCAMMRambus said standard CPU platforms with conventional memory subsystems are expected to provide the majority of growth into 2027, while SOCAMM is viewed as complementary and positioned for specific AI head-node applications.
