Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2027
Earnings Call Date:Oct 28, 2026|% Change Since:-0.84%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was broadly positive: management highlighted 50% growth in four-division income before income taxes, strong first-half and second-quarter ROE, record Wealth Management recurring revenue and inflows, solid Investment Banking momentum, continued Banking Division growth, and disciplined expense and risk management. These positives were partly offset by sequential declines in group earnings, sharp declines in Wholesale and Global Markets results, an 85% Wholesale expense ratio above target, market uncertainty, seed-investment valuation losses, and a slower October start in some businesses.

Company Guidance

Management maintained a quantitative target for ROE of 10%-12% or higher toward 2030, with ROE 13.1% 2030 described as the vision to be achieved, and committed to a 40% or higher payout ratio and 50% or higher total payout ratio; for October, Wealth Management revenue was at roughly the same level as in the second quarter, Wholesale got off to a somewhat slower start than in the previous quarter, Investment Banking was off to a slow start but the pipeline remains solid, and the Wholesale cost ratio is expected to come down as the company proceeds with monetization, although the second half is difficult to comment quantitatively; overseas asset management opportunities will be studied if the company is blessed with great opportunities, but size-wise, a large size deal is not expected, while overseas wealth management remains focused on organic sales, with revenue having grown by about sixfold since 2020, AUM about 44 billion, and more than 3,000 client accounts opened.

  • First-Half Profit Growth Across All DivisionsTotal income before income taxes across the four divisions increased 50% year-on-year, reflecting substantially higher profits across all divisions and improved earning power.
  • Strong First-Half ROE and DividendFirst-half ROE was 13.3%, described as solid despite volatile market conditions. The interim dividend was set at JPY 35 per share, with a payout ratio of 41%.
  • Second-Quarter ROE Exceeded the 2030 Quantitative TargetSecond-quarter ROE was 10.9%, despite normalized and uncertain market conditions, meeting the quantitative target of 10%-12% or higher toward 2030.
  • Stable Revenue Base Continued to ExpandWealth Management recurring revenue assets increased 20% from the end of September last year to approximately JPY 31 trillion. Investment Management assets under management increased by JPY 50 trillion to approximately JPY 150 trillion, particularly reflecting the impact of acquisition. Stable revenue increased roughly 1.6 fold year-on-year.
  • Wealth Management Recurring Revenue Reached a RecordWealth Management recurring revenue rose 13% quarter-on-quarter to an all-time high of JPY 66.7 billion. Net inflows into recurring revenue assets also reached an all-time high of JPY 755.4 billion, while the recurring revenue cost coverage ratio was 79%.
  • Long-Term Investment Demand Remained SolidDespite increased uncertainty from rising interest rates in Japan and the U.S., purchases of assets for long-term diversified investment continued to gain traction. Inflows into products and services designed for medium- to long-term asset management remained solid in October.
  • Growth in Wealth Management Product AreasBond sales increased 66% quarter-on-quarter, supported by rising yen interest rates and contributions from a major primary deal. Discretionary investments increased 9%, with SMA contract value reaching an all-time high, while insurance sales rose 14% on demand for pension and estate planning.
  • International Wealth Management Expanded Its FranchiseInternational Wealth Management revenue remained high, supported by growth in assets under management. Since 2020, more than 3,000 client accounts have been opened, mainly in Hong Kong and Singapore and also in Dubai. The business has grown by about sixfold since being shifted to Wholesale in 2020, and assets under management were approximately 44 billion.
  • Investment Management Maintained High Revenue Levels and Fund InflowsAlthough Investment Management revenue moderated from the prior quarter, revenues remained high in absolute terms and business revenue was JPY 82.3 billion. Assets under management in the actively managed Japanese equity fund established in July exceeded JPY 150 billion, while flagship balanced-fund assets under management rose to almost JPY 2 trillion.
  • Investment Management Recorded Broad-Based InflowsInvestment Management net inflows were JPY 478 billion for the quarter. Investment-trust inflows totaled roughly JPY 1 trillion, with inflows into private equity, balanced funds, and actively managed Japanese equity funds. Alternative assets under management reached a new high due to net inflows.
  • Investment Banking Revenue and League-Table Position ImprovedInvestment Banking net revenue increased 9% quarter-on-quarter to JPY 54.7 billion. Nomura ranked first in both Japan-related ECM and DCM league tables for the April-through-September period and acted as bookrunner for nine of the 10 biggest deals in Japan in the first half.
  • Investment Banking Pipeline Remained RobustAdvisory revenue benefited from growth in investment and portfolio realignment deals, including sponsor-related and infrastructure transactions. ECM benefited from major public offerings and CB deals in Japan, while DCM continued to address strong domestic funding demand and had a solid pipeline, including large-sized deals.
  • Banking Division Delivered GrowthBanking Division net revenue increased 7% quarter-on-quarter to JPY 16.4 billion, while income before income taxes increased 20% to JPY 4.4 billion. Banking net revenue rose 11% to JPY 4.5 billion, and trust and agent service net revenue rose 6% to JPY 11.9 billion.
  • Deposit Sweep and Loan Businesses Continued to GrowThe deposit sweep service continued to grow in contracts and balances, while funding costs were kept in check through deposit-balance growth. Loans outstanding totaled JPY 1,361 billion, and both loan accounts opened and loan balances continued to grow steadily, particularly for Nomura Web Loan.
  • Group Expenses Were Managed LowerGroup-wide non-interest expenses declined approximately 3% quarter-on-quarter to JPY 459.5 billion. Performance-linked bonus provisions and other compensation and benefits fell approximately 5%, while trading-related expenses normalized.
  • Risk Controls for Data-Center Finance Were EmphasizedNomura stated that its positions had not been impacted by concerns related to data centers, CoreWeave, or hedge-fund deleveraging. Data-center-related investment represented only a portion of its activity, with project-level due diligence and controls over total risk, creditworthiness, and off-taker credit. SPPC activity related to securitization and private credit was described as only a few percentage points of the overall activity.
  • Shareholder-Return Framework ReaffirmedManagement reaffirmed commitments to a payout ratio of 40% or higher and a total payout ratio of 50% or higher, while stating that future shareholder returns and potential buybacks would be considered alongside financial soundness and growth opportunities.
  • Domestic Financing-Cycle Opportunity IdentifiedManagement stated that a major change in the domestic financing cycle was emerging, with potential opportunities for Wealth Management, Investment Banking, and Investment Management to work together. The company also expected that changes in money flows from government bonds toward corporate bonds could benefit multiple businesses.
