Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 27, 2026|% Change Since:-5.36%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall. Watsco reported record revenue and gross profit, improving organic demand, strong acquisition performance, significant digital and technology growth, a robust balance sheet, and positive October momentum. The main challenges were gross margin below the 30% long-term goal, higher SG&A and variable costs, an incomplete replacement-market recovery, increased inventory, and expected input-cost-driven pricing pressure. Management characterized these issues as manageable within a broader recovery and long-term growth strategy.

Company Guidance

Management expects the impact from the A2L transition to be “largely over by the end of this year,” remains focused on its “long-term goal of 30%” gross margins, and said Hydros “will continue to scale in 2027 to more locations and more vendors”; October was “looking healthy to date,” with management saying it “hope and expect to carry it through the end of the year, but hard to say,” while total-company revenues were “up double digits so far in this quarter,” including acquisitions. Management expects “some price increases this fall going into next year,” and said the expectation is that OEM pricing actions over “the next 12 months” will “come early and more conventional and kind of more ordinary”; fourth-quarter margin is “generally” better, with a “20, 30 basis points of improvement” over a “10-year average,” although management said, “I’m not giving guidance.” Management also said there is “an opportunity” for year-end inventory to be “more or less equal to last year at the year-end, excluding the two acquisitions we have made,” and that side discharge, currently “in the 8%-10% range of the total market today,” “is going to continue to grow.”

  • Record Third-Quarter Revenue and EarningsThird-quarter sales increased 7% to a record $2.22 billion, including 4% same-store growth. Gross profit was a record $586 million, gross margin was 26.4%, operating income was $225 million with a 10.1% operating margin, and earnings per share was $3.77.
  • Improving Demand and Residential HVAC GrowthManagement reported improving demand, normalizing demand trends, and simpler operating conditions. Residential HVAC equipment, Watsco's largest product group, grew 7% during the quarter, with gains in both unit volume and pricing.
  • Jackson Supply Performing StronglyJackson Supply, acquired on June 1, has approximately $230 million in annual sales and operates from 25 Sunbelt locations. It grew 16% during the quarter as part of Watsco.
  • Granite Group Acquisition Expands Plumbing PlatformWatsco completed the acquisition of The Granite Group, which has approximately $500 million in annual sales, 82 Northeast locations, and more than 11,000 customers. Watsco now has 112 locations offering both HVAC and plumbing products and said it is committed to growing in the plumbing market.
  • Strong Balance Sheet and Cash FlowWatsco ended the quarter with $649 million of cash and no debt. Year-to-date operating cash flow improved 79% to $304 million. After using a portion of cash to fund the Granite transaction in October, management said the company remained in a positive net cash flow position and was committed to maintaining a pristine balance sheet.
  • Improved Fixed-Cost EfficiencyExcluding investments in technology and other initiatives, fixed costs increased 1% year-to-date in 2026. Management described the year-to-date progress in fixed-cost efficiency as good progress, though not optimized.
  • E-Commerce and Digital Engagement GrowthE-commerce sales grew 12% year-to-date and reached 37% of sales over the last 12 months, with certain markets at 60%-70% penetration. The mobile app had more than 73,000 active monthly users.
  • OnCallAir ExpansionOver the last year, approximately 351,000 proposals were presented to homeowners through OnCallAir, generating $2 billion of gross merchandise value, a 14% increase over the comparable period.
  • Technology Platforms Continue to ScaleSupplySync.com launched earlier in the year and is operating a pilot program with customers, with plans to scale to more customers in the coming months. VCR continues to expand across non-equipment product categories, relationships with strategic vendor partners were described as being at all-time highs in many cases, Hydros matured further and is expected to scale to more locations and vendors in 2027, and the use of AI continues to evolve throughout Watsco.
  • Industry Volume RecoveryManagement said industry volumes are rebounding and stabilizing. Compared with the prior-year third quarter, same-store sales moved from down to up, add-on/replacement moved from down to up, residential new construction moved from down more than 10% to up more than 10%, and equipment sales moved from down 7% to up 5%.
  • Positive October MomentumManagement said sales improved every month sequentially since May, with October better than September. October revenue was up double digits for the total company, including acquisitions, and was described as healthy and continuing the momentum seen during the quarter.
  • Side-Discharge Product OpportunitySide-discharge products represented approximately 8%-10% of the total market and were described as a significant growth market over the last two years. Management highlighted their variable-speed capability, efficiency benefits, broad good-better-best product range, and increasing contractor acceptance.
  • Long-Term Gross-Margin Improvement PlanManagement said gross margins have moved from the historical 24%-25% range to approximately 27% year-to-date and reiterated a long-term goal of 30%. Pricing optimization, VCR, Hydros, SupplySync, customer technology adoption, and product mix were identified as potential contributors, although management said progress would not be a straight line.
  • Potential for Higher-Efficiency Product MixManagement said the industry is currently at an entry-level mix, with approximately 80%-85% at entry level, and indicated there is more likely to be a mix-up opportunity over time. Side-discharge products were cited as a way to offer higher efficiency at a competitive price.
