Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 15, 2026|% Change Since:0.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall. Management reported record revenue, double-digit EPS growth, broad-based fee growth, expanding net interest margin, healthy credit metrics, improved operating-leverage guidance, and constructive loan and deposit trends. The principal challenges were the reserve build, higher expenses tied partly to investments and BTIG, the decline in AOCI-adjusted CET1, a temporary pause in share repurchases, muted mortgage and commercial real estate activity, and regulatory and interest-rate uncertainty. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.

Company Guidance

For the fourth quarter, U.S. Bancorp expects net interest income growth of 6% to 7% on a fully taxable equivalent basis, total fee revenue growth in the range of 13% to 14%, with roughly half of the growth coming from BTIG, and noninterest expense growth of approximately 8%, or closer to 4% excluding BTIG; net interest margin is expected to increase by a similar amount, with about $10 billion or so per quarter of fixed rate assets repricing at about a 125-basis point improvement or so, and deposit betas assumed at about a 50% or so level to start out with. For full year 2026, the company expects total net revenue growth of 8% to 9%, or 6% to 7% excluding BTIG, and approximately 300 basis points positive operating leverage, or approximately 400 basis points excluding the impact from BTIG, compared with prior guidance of 200 and 300 basis points respectively; it expects the capital markets business to grow from 8% to 10% or more of total company revenue over the next 3 to 5 years, corporate payments to deliver continued growth, treasury management growth in that mid single digit area, BTIG fee revenue of about $200 million in the next quarter, other revenue in the $120 million to $150 million range, and merchant growth in that 0% area for the next couple of quarters. The company expects capital ratios to build from here, positioning it to resume share repurchases over the next quarter or 2, with a 70% to 75% payout, expects a path to a 3% NIM at some point in 2027, plans branch investment of $300 million going forward, and expects residential mortgage to be in the mid twenties at some point over time.

  • Record Revenue and EPS GrowthThird-quarter net revenue reached a record approximately $8 billion, up 8.7% year over year, while diluted earnings per share was $1.34, up approximately 10% from a year ago. Excluding the reserve build, EPS growth was 16%.
  • Positive Operating LeverageDisciplined productivity generated 240 basis points of positive operating leverage in the quarter. Excluding BTIG, operating leverage was 440 basis points, and full-year 2026 guidance increased to approximately 300 basis points, or approximately 400 basis points excluding BTIG, compared with prior guidance of 200 and 300 basis points, respectively.
  • Strong Payments PerformanceTotal payments revenue grew 6.5% year over year. Corporate payments revenue grew approximately 19% year over year, supported primarily by new business and higher corporate and government spending, while treasury management continued to grow in the mid-single-digit range.
  • Diversified Fee Revenue BaseFees contributed 44% of total revenue for the quarter. Total fee income increased 14.9% year over year, with broad-based strength across most fee categories.
  • BTIG Acquisition Contribution and Capital Markets ExpansionBTIG contributed $226 million of fee revenue in the third quarter after closing in June. Capital markets revenue increased 69% year over year, including a full-quarter BTIG contribution and 10% growth across legacy capital markets. The company expects capital markets to grow from 8% to 10% or more of total company revenue over the next 3 to 5 years.
  • Capital Markets Cross-Selling MomentumManagement said the combined BTIG and U.S. Bancorp businesses are working closely together, with good cultural fit and substantive cross-selling progress. The company expects the combined capital markets business to reach approximately 10% of total net revenue or more over time.
  • Net Interest Income and Margin ExpansionFully taxable equivalent net interest income increased 5.6% year over year and 2.3% linked quarter. Net interest margin expanded 5 basis points sequentially to 2.84%, driven by improving loan yields and fixed-asset repricing benefits. Management expects net interest margin to increase by a similar amount in the fourth quarter.
  • Constructive Loan and Deposit GrowthAverage loans grew 8.0% year over year and 1.0% sequentially. Total average deposits grew 2.9% year over year and 2.2% sequentially, driven by another record quarter of consumer deposits and strong relationship-based deposit growth.
  • Improving Asset and Funding MixFloating-rate loans comprised 30% of earning assets at quarter end, up from 22% four years ago. Approximately $10 billion of fixed-rate assets reprice each quarter at about a 125-basis-point improvement. Total funding costs increased only 1 basis point quarter over quarter as the funding mix improved.
  • Small Business Franchise ExpansionU.S. Bancorp serves more than 2 million small businesses through its banking, payments, and cash-management platform. During the quarter, it onboarded the Amazon co-brand partnership, expanded its Business Essentials product suite, and established new banking teams in expansion markets. Small business is expected to remain an important priority going into 2027.
  • Amazon Small Business Card Portfolio GrowthThe Amazon small business credit card portfolio contributed approximately $900 million to third-quarter average loans and $1.7 billion to period-end loans. Management expects the full-quarter impact of the portfolio in the fourth quarter.
  • Broad-Based Commercial Lending DemandManagement described core commercial and industrial loan growth as healthy and strong, with robust pipelines across food and beverage, energy, technology, retail, insurance, and other industries. Growth was also supported by small business and SBA lending.
  • Healthy Credit QualityCredit quality metrics remained healthy across the board. Linked-quarter nonperforming assets declined 1.6%, net charge-offs declined 2 basis points to 51 basis points, FICO bands in the credit card portfolio marginally improved, and card delinquencies and net charge-offs trended lower.
  • Stable Capital and Tangible Book Value GrowthThe common equity tier 1 ratio remained stable at 10.8%, while tangible book value per share increased 5.4% year over year. Tangible common equity remained stable at 6.6% at quarter end.
  • Expected Return to Share RepurchasesManagement said capital ratios are expected to build and that the company is positioned to resume share repurchases over the next quarter or two. The company remains committed to a 70% to 75% capital distribution payout range and said it has high confidence in its ability to rebuild capital through normal-course earnings generation.
  • Raised Full-Year Revenue GuidanceFull-year 2026 total net revenue growth guidance increased to 8% to 9%, or 6% to 7% excluding BTIG, compared with the prior range of 5% to 7%. Fourth-quarter guidance calls for net interest income growth of 6% to 7%, total fee revenue growth of 13% to 14%, and noninterest expense growth of approximately 8%, or closer to 4% excluding BTIG.
  • Branch and National Footprint InvestmentThe company is increasing average annual branch investment from approximately $200 million to $300 million, with an initial focus on densifying its existing footprint in markets with high household formation rates. Client centers are being used to establish national presence for commercial, wealth, mortgage, commercial real estate, and small business teams.
  • Corporate Payments Technology InvestmentU.S. Bancorp launched its first USDBC stablecoin pilot during the quarter and is investing to create interoperability among ACH, wire, card, stablecoin, and tokenized-deposit rails while maintaining the safety and soundness of the banking system.
  • AI Productivity ProgramManagement identified AI as an important and increasingly active productivity lever, with growing use cases across the company. U.S. Bancorp has invested in the ability to switch to lower-cost models and said it has confidence in achieving positive productivity returns over time, while taking a more measured approach to client-facing applications because of privacy and customer-confidence concerns.
  • Balance Sheet Optimization and Asset SensitivityThe company has shifted toward more asset sensitivity by increasing exposure to floating-rate C&I, commercial real estate, and card assets, reducing the investment portfolio, and holding more cash. Management expects the funding mix, asset mix, and fixed-asset repricing to support the path toward a 3% net interest margin at some point in 2027.
  • Strong Interconnected Client RelationshipsManagement said its interconnected strategy is producing momentum in deposits, payments, credit cards, small business, and capital markets. The Smartly product, which links banking and credit card products, has been successful and has contributed to funding-mix improvements.
  • Organic Growth Focus and Selective AcquisitionsManagement continues to favor bolt-on acquisitions that provide local scale or product capabilities, while emphasizing that organic strategies for depository growth have compelling strategic, financial, and execution benefits.
