Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call presented a mixed outlook. Shinhan maintained strong capital levels, increased shareholder returns, controlled expenses, improved profitability ratios, and reported manageable asset quality. However, these positives were offset by a 12.9% quarter-over-quarter decline in net income, a 45.5% decline in noninterest income, funding-driven NIM pressure, weak capital-market activity, declines at several subsidiaries, foreign-exchange-related OCI pressure, and execution requirements for the Lotte Insurance acquisition.
Shinhan said it would execute KRW 200 billion of the approved KRW 450 billion buyback within the year and the remaining KRW 250 billion by January next year, while pursuing to increase year-end dividends; assuming quarterly cash dividends are maintained at this level until year-end, full year DPS would be KRW 2,960, a 14.3% Y-o-Y increase. The bank expects current NIM levels to be maintained until year-end, is maintaining a neutral outlook on NIM, and expects NIM to stabilize from next year; after the fourth quarter is over, it believes NIM will improve. The group expects credit cost ratios to remain in the low 40 bp range, will manage ROE between 10% to 12%, with the minimum at least an ROE of 10% and an aim for 12%, and expects around KRW 2 trillion of Shinhan Securities commercial paper volume next year. For Lotte Insurance, about KRW 300 billion of common stock capital increase is being considered, versus about KRW 900 billion on a simple calculation, and the acquisition would reduce CET1 by around 19 bp.
- Stable Capital Position and Increased Shareholder ReturnsGroup CET1 stood at 13.62% at the end of Q3, improving 12 basis points quarter-over-quarter. The Board approved KRW 450 billion in share buybacks and KRW 740 per share in Q3 cash dividends. Full-year DPS would be KRW 2,960 if quarterly dividends are maintained, representing a 14.3% year-over-year increase. Share buybacks completed during the year are expected to total KRW 1.6 trillion, up 28% year-over-year.
- Improved Profitability RatiosGroup ROE and ROTCE each improved by 0.9 percentage points year-over-year to 11.9% and 13.4%, respectively.
- Interest Income GrowthGroup interest income grew 1.8% quarter-over-quarter, driven by growth in average loan balances and higher interest income from bonds held.
- Selective Asset Growth and Lower Risk-Weighted AssetsKorean won-denominated bank loans increased 1.4% quarter-over-quarter while management pursued a profitability-focused growth strategy. Group RWA decreased 1.6% quarter-over-quarter, and management said it would continue emphasizing internal efficiency and strategic asset allocation.
- Expense ControlGroup G&A expenses decreased 5.0% quarter-over-quarter due to a seasonal decrease in taxes and dues and the dissipation of prior-quarter securities subsidiary performance-based compensation. The cost-to-income ratio remained at a stable 37.6%.
- Credit Costs Within Management RangeAlthough group credit costs increased quarter-over-quarter because of a preemptive provisioning stance, the credit cost ratio stood at 42 basis points, improving 4 basis points year-over-year and remaining within the management range planned at the beginning of the year.
- Manageable Asset QualityThe advanced delinquency ratio improved 5 basis points quarter-over-quarter, while management said overall delinquency and asset quality indicators remained manageable. The Group CRO said most delinquency and substandard-and-below NPL indicators were improving across affiliates.
- Shinhan Card Earnings ImprovementShinhan Card earnings improved 68.4% quarter-over-quarter, reflecting a gain on the sale of its office building.
- Solid Overseas Earnings CapacityDespite a 9.9% quarter-over-quarter decline in overseas business earnings due partly to the lower exchange rate, management said major overseas subsidiaries maintained solid earnings-generating capacity. SBJ continued stable growth, driven by a strong real estate market and higher interest income after policy rate hikes, while the bank's MMC continued its strong earnings trend centered on IB expansion.
- Digital Customer Growth and Brokerage DiversificationShinhan Securities attracted about 600,000 customers through SOL LINK SuperSOL from July. Financial-product sales, including ELS and bonds, helped cover part of the decline in brokerage activity.
- Commercial Paper Business ExpansionShinhan Securities reported approximately KRW 530 billion of total commercial paper issuance and maintained a target margin of 100 basis points. The company said it was targeting approximately KRW 2 trillion of volume next year while maintaining conservative risk management and avoiding excessive competition on issuance volume, rates, and margins.
- Lotte Insurance Acquisition to Strengthen Insurance PortfolioShinhan decided to acquire 77% of Lotte Insurance for KRW 693.3 billion to strengthen its insurance business portfolio and enhance medium- to long-term profitability and capital efficiency using retained capital. Management said the acquisition would reduce CET1 by around 19 basis points, which it considers manageable, and expects potential improvement from Lotte Insurance's current profitability.
- Potential Insurance Profitability ImprovementManagement said Shinhan Life's approximately KRW 40 billion to KRW 50 billion of insurance losses could improve through the acquisition and that Lotte Insurance's profitability could contribute to ROE upside after normalization. Management also cited an expected positive PPA impact of approximately KRW 30 billion to KRW 40 billion.
