Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. The company reported record backlog, solid revenue and EPS growth, strong operating margins and free cash flow, raised 2026 operating and EPS guidance, and outlined accelerating growth opportunities across B-21, Sentinel, space, munitions, autonomous systems, microelectronics, and international markets. The main challenges were continuing-resolution and appropriation uncertainty, higher planned B-21 capital spending, development-program risk, expected production-mix-related margin pressure, and muted near-term Space Systems growth, but management expressed confidence in execution and the long-term outlook.
Northrop Grumman expects 2026 sales of $43.75 billion to $44.25 billion, a full year book to bill ratio of at least 1.3, segment operating income of $4.94 billion to $5.04 billion, a full year segment operating margin rate of approximately 11.3% at the midpoint, adjusted EPS guidance increased by $0.70, and adjusted free cash flow of $3.1 billion to $3.5 billion; segment sales guidance was reaffirmed, while operating income guidance increased at AES to the high 9% and at MS to the mid-15%, implying a fourth quarter segment operating margin rate of mid to high-11%. For 2027, the company projects sales growth between 5% and 7%, with higher sales in all 4 segments, expects segment operating income to grow faster than sales with 10 to 20 basis points of margin expansion beyond the current 2026 guidance midpoint, capital expenditures at 4.5% of sales and approximately $2.1 billion, and adjusted free cash flow in the range of $3.3 billion to $3.7 billion; it expects the growth rate in 2028 to be higher than it is in 2027, with potential for further acceleration beyond that, and expects about 35% of its backlog to burn down over the next 12 months, another 55% over the following 24 months, leaving the remainder past 36 months.
- Record Backlog and Strong BookingsThird-quarter book-to-bill was 1.5x, with a year-to-date ratio of 1.45. Backlog increased 20% year over year to a record $110 billion, driven by more than $16 billion of bookings.
- Third-Quarter Revenue and Earnings GrowthThird-quarter sales were $11.1 billion, up 7% year over year, with higher sales across all four segments. Diluted EPS increased 3% to $7.89, driven by higher top-line sales, segment operating income expansion, and additional tax benefits.
- Strong Operating Performance and Cash FlowSegment operating income grew 5% and the segment operating margin rate was 12.1%. Adjusted free cash flow was $1.8 billion, up more than 40% year over year, driven by improvements in working capital and $371 million of proceeds from the sale of a B-21 test asset.
- Raised 2026 Operating and EPS GuidanceThe company increased the midpoint of full-year segment operating income guidance by $65 million, to a range of $4.94 billion to $5.04 billion, implying an approximately 11.3% segment operating margin rate at the midpoint. EPS guidance was increased by $0.70, driven by higher segment performance and a lower tax rate. Sales guidance remains $43.75 billion to $44.25 billion, adjusted free cash flow guidance remains $3.1 billion to $3.5 billion, and full-year book-to-bill is expected to be at least 1.3.
- Aeronautics Growth Led by F-35 and B-21Aeronautics sales increased 14%, driven by higher F-35 production and sustainment volumes, higher strike-portfolio volumes from the B-21 ramp, and higher B-2 sustainment sales. Operating margin improved to 10.5% through product mix and disciplined program execution.
- Defense Systems ExpansionDefense Systems sales increased 12% to $2.3 billion, driven by the continued Sentinel ramp and higher tactical solid rocket motor volumes. Operating income increased to $250 million, with a 10.8% segment operating margin supported by execution on tactical missile programs.
- Mission Systems and Space Systems PerformanceMission Systems sales increased 2%, primarily from restricted airborne radar programs and higher marine systems volumes, while segment operating margin reached 15.8% through continued portfolio execution. Space Systems sales increased 2%, driven by national security programs, including restricted efforts and GPI, and margins improved to 11.3% with stable GEM63 XL performance and resumed rocket-motor deliveries.
- Sentinel Program MilestonesThe company completed the first full vertical assembly of an inert Sentinel missile at Vandenberg Space Force Base and received U.S. Air Force approval that Sentinel design maturity supports proceeding toward first flight in 2027. The program was described as a key growth driver this year and throughout the 2030s.
- Space Development Agency Satellite DeploymentNorthrop Grumman launched and deployed its first 21 satellites for the Tranche 1 transport layer of the Space Development Agency's proliferated warfighter space architecture. Over the following six months, the company expects a sustained launch cadence, with nearly 50 of its planned 150 satellites expected to be deployed for transport and tracking missions.
- 2027 Growth and Margin OutlookThe company projects 2027 sales growth of 5% to 7%, with higher sales in all four segments. Segment operating income is expected to grow faster than sales, with 10 to 20 basis points of margin expansion beyond the current 2026 guidance midpoint. Adjusted free cash flow is expected to be $3.3 billion to $3.7 billion, and growth is expected to accelerate further in 2028.
- B-21 Production and Lifecycle ExpansionNorthrop Grumman expects to invest in B-21 acceleration capacity over the next couple of years, with higher production volumes later in the decade. Additional B-21 growth drivers include sustainment and modernization, while the company expects to ramp production as the development program progresses.
- Virginia-Class Procurement AwardThe company definitized the Virginia-class Block VI submarine procurement for 12 additional shipsets of main propulsion units and ship service turbine generators. The $1.4 billion award was added to backlog and supports the Navy partnership through 2032.
- Manufacturing Capacity and Hiring ExpansionDuring the last three months, Northrop Grumman opened or expanded facilities in Utah, Maryland, Arizona, and Florida, adding more than 1 million square feet of manufacturing and engineering space and creating more than 2,000 new jobs. The facilities support B-21 production, solid rocket motors, hypersonic propulsion, space systems, and aircraft design and manufacturing.
- Talon Blue Autonomous Flight AchievementTalon Blue completed its first fully autonomous flight, including taxi, takeoff, flight maneuvers, and landing. The aircraft was designed and built in 24 months, and the company said the platform is being used to test and mature autonomous capabilities for faster and lower-cost fielding.
- Autonomy Integration and CCA CapabilitiesTalonIQ demonstrated interoperability with other companies' autonomous software and control of other platforms. Northrop Grumman has worked with approximately a half-dozen companies through its test bed and cited more than 5,000 flight hours of unmanned experience. The company is pursuing affordable, scalable manufacturing and integration capabilities for collaborative combat aircraft.
- Fortitude Microelectronics TechnologyThe company introduced Fortitude, a single-chip microelectronics technology the size of a grain of rice that delivers up to 3x the power and 20x the signal quality of comparable market solutions. It can replace dozens of components while reducing system weight and power demands, with potential applications including radar, GPS, electronic warfare, and future 6G networks.
- Quantum and Commercial Microelectronics OpportunityNorthrop Grumman said its microelectronics and quantum technologies have applications beyond defense, including commercial markets. The company is evaluating strategic alternatives to scale its quantum capability and said options include continued investment, broadening the investor base, or separating the business.
