Q1 2027 Earnings Call Summary
Q1 2027
Earnings Call Date:Oct 01, 2026|
% Change Since:
|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call presented clear operational progress in the Performance portfolio, including broad-based sports growth, product innovation, improved gross margin, expense discipline, a strong balance sheet and a detailed productivity program. However, these positives were outweighed in near-term financial impact by the 4% reported revenue decline, significant Sportswear, Jordan Brand and Greater China weakness, expectations for a high single-digit fiscal 2027 revenue decline, further China deterioration and EBIT pressure. Management expressed confidence in the long-term strategy but acknowledged that the business remains in transition and that the turnaround will take time.Company Guidance
Q1 Results In Line with Expectations
NIKE said first-quarter results were in line with expectations. Revenue was within the guided range, gross margin improved as expected, and costs were managed with discipline.
Performance Portfolio Delivered Broad-Based Growth
The NIKE Performance portfolio grew high single digits in Q1, building on growth to a $16 billion business in fiscal 2026. Growth was broad-based across Running, Global Football, Training, Basketball, Tennis and Golf.
Running Continued to Gain Momentum
Running grew double digits again with consistent share gains. NIKE said it had nearly tripled its share of the Max cushioning category over the past year, led by the Vomero franchise, and introduced four new footwear innovations over the past two months.
Strong Global Football Performance
Global Football generated strong double-digit growth in all four geographies, benefiting from World Cup energy. World Cup team-kit sales doubled compared with the 2022 tournament, while club football kits grew high teens.
Growth Across Training, Tennis, Golf and Basketball
Training grew globally, led by EMEA; Tennis and Golf both grew double digits; and Basketball grew double digits in North America. NIKE also introduced the Hybrid Footwear System for running and strength movements and the Hyperslide recovery product.
Expansion of Women's Basketball
NIKE said its women's signature basketball business grew nearly 500% from fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2026. The Caitlin 1 became NIKE Basketball's largest women's signature shoe launch, launching in 5,000 doors, twice the average for a NIKE Basketball signature shoe.
North America Revenue Growth and Performance Sell-Through
North America revenue increased 2%, driven by Running, Global Football and Basketball. NIKE reported good sell-through of performance products across sporting-goods retailers, specialty accounts and other channels.
Successful Sportswear Franchise Performance
Although the overall Sportswear business declined, the Air Force 1 was driving a stable full-price business, several Running-inspired franchises including the P-6000 and V5 Runner grew by strong double digits, and Studio Fleece was NIKE, Inc.'s best-performing apparel collection of the quarter.
China Running and Flagship Retail Progress
Despite the broader China decline, Running delivered double-digit growth in China for its sixth consecutive quarter. The China After Dark Tour registered nearly 4,000 runners and sold out on the first day, while the Shanghai House of Innovation delivered 10 consecutive months of growth.
Gross Margin and Expense Discipline
First-quarter gross margin was 42.8%, up 60 basis points year over year, benefiting from supply-chain cost management and FX tailwinds. SG&A declined 3% on a reported basis while NIKE increased demand-creation investments associated with the World Cup.
Strong Balance Sheet and Shareholder Returns
NIKE ended the quarter with $8.4 billion in cash and short-term investments, remained in a net cash position, and had leverage of roughly 2x. The company returned approximately $610 million to shareholders through dividends and said the dividend remains a significant capital-allocation priority.
Pace Program Targets Productivity and Operating Improvement
The Pace program is intended to improve speed to market, streamline decision-making, evolve the supply chain, move resources closer to countries and consumers, and sharpen organizational focus. NIKE expects approximately $2.5 billion in savings, with maximum savings expected in fiscal years 2029 and 2030.
Supply Chain and Operating Model Investments
NIKE is establishing a new capability-focused campus in Bengaluru, India, plans to reorganize into three geographies, and is continuing to invest in product creation teams and marketplace capabilities. The company expects teams to move into the new geographic formation in fiscal year 2028.
Local and Partnership-Based Consumer Engagement
NIKE described its Austin activation around the Texas-Ohio State football game, which brought together Running, Training, Football and Sportswear, sold through the Texas-specific Studio Fleece and Solo Fleece collection, and announced 13 new NIL athletes across eight sports. NIKE said its university partnerships reach more than 13 million students.
