Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Nov 04, 2026|% Change Since:0.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall. Revenue, mRNA demand, Cygnus performance, profitability, customer additions, innovation, and full-year guidance all improved, while management expressed confidence in the pipeline and long-term strategy. The main negatives were the specialty chemistry decline, ongoing GAAP losses, lumpy GMP and CDMO timing, disappointing results from some external cancer-vaccine programs, and limited near-term GMP revenue expected from ModTail.

Company Guidance

For 2026, Maravai raised its expected revenue range to $212 million to $216 million, up from $205 million to $215 million, or up $4 million at the midpoint, and raised full year adjusted EBITDA guidance to $40 million to $42 million, up $7 million at the midpoint from $33 million to $35 million, representing an improvement of over $70 million year over year; it also expects continued adjusted gross margin expansion of greater than 1.6 thousand basis points year over year. Management said Q4 volume growth would be multiples of Q3 performance, while maintaining quarterly variation, and expects full-year GMP growth of plus 20%; for 2027, it expects a quarterly shift in GMP later into the second half of the year, does not expect massive dollars in 2027 on ModTail in GMP, sees Cygnus’ base business at mid single digits plus and estimated Cygnus growth for the year at 5% to 6%, with potential to get a little bit north of that, and said roughly 5% growth for the total year was baked into guidance for China, with no China revenue assumptions for TriLink in Q4.

  • Revenue Growth and Strong Third-Quarter ExecutionThird-quarter revenue was $45.9 million, representing 10% year-over-year growth. Management attributed the results to solid execution across the business, higher revenue, favorable product mix, and the operating model built over the past year.
  • mRNA and TriLink GrowthTriLink revenue increased 12% year over year, led by strong demand for mRNA products. Total mRNA revenue increased 28%, discovery mRNA grew 27%, and GMP consumables grew 30%.
  • Cygnus Delivered Its Sixth Consecutive Growth QuarterCygnus revenue increased 8% year over year, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. The business benefited from steady demand for HCP and ELISA kits and strength in China, Korea, and India.
  • Improved Profitability and Gross MarginAdjusted gross margin expanded to 57.7%, up more than 1.7 thousand basis points year over year. Adjusted EBITDA improved by $16.6 million year over year to $5.8 million, driven by stronger revenue, favorable mix toward high-margin GMP and mRNA discovery, and continued OpEx discipline.
  • Improved GAAP Loss and Adjusted Loss Per ShareGAAP net loss before noncontrolling interest improved to $24 million from $45.1 million in the prior-year period. Basic and diluted loss per share improved to $0.09 from $0.18, while adjusted loss per share improved to $0.03 from $0.08.
  • Raised Full-Year 2026 GuidanceThe company raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $212 million to $216 million from $205 million to $215 million, increasing the midpoint by $4 million. Full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance increased to $40 million to $42 million from $33 million to $35 million, up $7 million at the midpoint and representing an improvement of over $70 million year over year. Management also expects adjusted gross margin expansion of greater than 1.6 thousand basis points year over year.
  • Strong mRNA Clinical Pipeline ProgressManagement highlighted Phase 2 activity for an investigational mRNA protein-replacement therapy in rare metabolic disease, a single-dose LNP gene-editing therapy entering a global pivotal cohort with 18-month data showing sustained correction above clinically meaningful thresholds, and plans for a Phase 3 mRNA flu-vaccine trial targeting both HA and NA antigens. The flu program has FDA Fast Track designation.
  • Broad GMP Customer and Program BaseMaravai is supporting more than 50 GMP customers in 2026, with an estimated average of 2 to 3 clinical programs per customer. Management stated that advancing programs generally require greater volumes of higher-quality GMP-grade materials.
  • ModTail Adoption Continued to ExpandGMP-grade ModTail remains expected to launch before year end. More than 180 customers were actively using the technology at the end of Q3, up from 125 at the end of Q2. Adoption is coming through new accounts, repeat orders, and expanded use across applications.
  • Expanded Capping and Product InnovationTriLink is introducing a broad library of novel mRNA caps from its R&D vault to customers, allowing them to evaluate different cap chemistries for specific applications. Cygnus's residual Prism A Mix-N-Go kit continued to gain traction, with revenue increasing each month since its June launch, and the company launched a new SV40 particle kit, the third kit in the Mach V franchise.
  • AI-Enabled mRNA Design and Operational AdoptionTriLink's proprietary AI-assisted mRNAbuilder is gaining commercial traction and expanding the company's role from reagent supplier to mRNA design service provider. More than 40% of Maravai employees are weekly active AI users. Management cited AI use in engineering, finance, commercial targeting, and R&D, including compressing work that previously took days into hours.
  • Commercial Customer Additions and GMP ConversionsDiscovery mRNA added more than 70 new customers in Q3, exceeding the prior record set in Q2. Four additional discovery customers transitioned to clinical-stage GMP customers during the quarter, bringing year-to-date RUO-to-GMP conversions to 10 versus an initial full-year target of 9.
  • Restructuring Completion and Operating InfrastructureManagement stated that restructuring actions are complete, the cost base has been reset, and the infrastructure is in place to scale. The company expects to leverage this infrastructure to drive further margin improvements as it grows.
  • China Intellectual Property and Commercial ExpansionBaiLing received an additional China patent in Q3, adding composition-of-matter protection. Together with the patent received in June, the patents cover both the process of making clean-capped RNA and the underlying molecular structures. Maravai also established an in-country sales presence in China to support market expansion.
  • Strong Cygnus Profitability and Balance Sheet LiquidityCygnus represented 38% of total revenue and generated $12.5 million of adjusted EBITDA with a 71% margin. Maravai ended the quarter with $73 million in cash, up $2.9 million from Q2.
  • Positive Outlook for Discovery, GMP, and CygnusManagement said discovery revenue trends remain healthy, the GMP funnel is strong, and similar market conditions are expected for Cygnus in 2027. Full-year GMP growth is expected to be approximately 20%, while Cygnus is expected to grow approximately 5% to 6% for the year, with potential for growth modestly above that range.
