Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was positive but cautious. Linde delivered quarterly records, broad-based sales and pricing growth, strong cash flow, a substantial project backlog and continued momentum in electronics and selected industrial markets. However, management highlighted meaningful challenges from Lincare, restructuring, margin pressure, European industrial weakness, uneven China demand, energy-cost recovery lags and a guarded fourth-quarter outlook. The number and significance of the stated operating strengths outweighed the challenges, while management emphasized that further improvement work remains.
For the fourth quarter, Linde is guiding an EPS range of $4.40 to $4.50, or 5% to 7% growth, with no prior year currency impact assumed, a 1% headwind sequentially, and no economic improvement assumed, including Lincare; the full year guide is $17.82 to $17.92, with the full year FX benefit increased from a strong 1% last quarter to a weak 2% this quarter. Sale of gas backlog is expected to remain pretty close to $8 billion, with projects that might lead up to around $1 billion starting up for the rest of this quarter, while sale of plant backlog is just under $3 billion and expected to continue to grow over the course of next year. Severance paybacks tend to be in the 1- to 2-year range, with this charge probably closer to the higher 2-year end, full benefits expected in the second half of next year on a full run rate basis, and full benefits within 3 to 4 quarters of the action itself. Electronics growth is expected to remain in the double-digit rate going forward, supported by about $2 billion of backlog projects under execution over the next 2, 3 years.
- Quarterly Records in Sales, Operating Profit and EPSSales reached $9.4 billion, operating profit was $2.8 billion and EPS was $4.59, all quarterly records. Sales increased 9% year over year, operating profit grew 8% and EPS grew 9%, or 8% excluding currency.
- Underlying Sales Growth and Broad Pricing ActionsUnderlying sales grew 5% excluding a 1% currency impact, 1% cost pass-through, 1% acquisition contribution and 1% engineering contribution. Volume increased 2% and prices increased 3%, with pricing actions focused on recovering inflation-related costs.
- Electronics Growth and Project PipelineElectronics sales grew 15%, primarily from organic growth in APAC and the U.S. Linde has approximately $2 billion of electronics projects under construction in the U.S., Korea and China, supporting expectations for continued double-digit growth. Management also cited a robust pipeline, relationships with the top 10 electronics players and continued growth in electronic special gases.
- Growth in Food and Beverage and Healthcare Excluding LincareFood and Beverage grew 3%, led by the Americas and EMEA, with demand supported by greater consumption of carbonated beverages, higher-quality prepared ready-to-eat meals and food delivery services. Healthcare grew 2%; excluding Lincare, growth was mid-single digit and aligned with demographic trends.
- Chemicals, Energy and Manufacturing GrowthChemicals and Energy grew 12%, reflecting stronger U.S. and China volumes and pricing actions, particularly in the Americas. Manufacturing grew 7%, reflecting broad-based price increases and stronger volumes in the U.S., China and India, including continued aerospace growth.
- Metals and Mining Growth and Broad-Based PricingMetals and mining increased 3%, driven primarily by the Americas and stronger construction and industrial activity in North America. Pricing improvements were described as broad-based across all major geographies.
- Strength in U.S. Packaged Gas and Core VolumesU.S. packaged gas growth remained elevated at low teens, supported by construction and data center activity. Merchant and on-site volumes were strongest in the U.S., including higher U.S. Gulf Coast energy and chemicals activity, stronger metals production and increased space propellant. China and India growth rates remained healthy with Linde's portfolio of Tier 1 customers.
- Large Sale-of-Gas BacklogThe sale-of-gas project backlog was close to $8 billion, with management expecting to start up projects totaling around $1 billion during the remainder of the quarter while remaining in the vicinity of the $8 billion target. The backlog is expected to provide future growth and increase supply density across core geographies.
- Growing Sale-of-Plant BacklogThe sale-of-plant backlog was just under $3 billion and included a space component. Management expects the trend line to continue growing over the course of next year.
- Restructuring and Productivity Actions UnderwayLinde recorded a $425 million restructuring charge to better align its cost base and portfolio with market conditions. In addition, price and productivity initiatives are underway, and management said the severance-related actions generally have 1- to 2-year cash paybacks, with full benefits expected within 3 to 4 quarters and, for this charge, largely in the second half of next year.
- Strong Operating Cash Flow and Capital DeploymentOperating cash flow was $3.2 billion, up 8% year over year and in line with EBITDA growth. Base CapEx was flat versus the prior year and down excluding currency. Linde deployed over $9 billion of capital year to date, with roughly half invested in the business and the remainder distributed to shareholders.
- Woodside Project ProgressThe Woodside project progressed as planned: the air separation unit and nitrogen supplies started up in the third quarter, and Linde is temporarily supplying hydrogen from its pipeline network. The two ATR trains are expected to start up in a staggered manner, with completion expected in the first half of next year; the project is expected to begin contributing in the second half of next year.
- Helium Supply-Chain Resilience and Contract WinsLinde said it has continued serving existing helium customers, added customers with long-term contract commitments and recovered dislocation costs through pricing. The company moved about 340 helium containers in the last quarter from sources in the U.S., North Africa, Europe and Asia.
- Positive Lincare Free Cash FlowManagement stated that Lincare's free cash flow has been positive throughout the period. Depreciation and CapEx mostly offset, with EBIT described as a rough proxy for free cash flow before working-capital effects.
- Positive Underlying Americas Pricing Run RateAmericas pricing was approximately 6%, including close to 2% related to cost recovery. Management characterized the underlying run rate as approximately 4% and said the global underlying pricing run rate was also approximately 4% when excluding the recovery component.
