Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call presented a mixed outlook. Holmen has strong cash flow, a strong financial position, healthy order books in Board and Paper, narrowing wood-product losses and long-term benefits from grid expansion. However, third-quarter profit declined, several markets remain weak, wood prices were down roughly 10%, Board and Paper were affected by a SEK 150 million maintenance impact, and significant industry overcapacity and energy-cost pressure remain. Management was constructive on selected initiatives but cautious about market conditions and future opportunities.Company Guidance
Strong Cash Flow and Financial Position
Holmen reported strong cash flow and said it continues to have a very strong financial situation.
Limited Financial Impact from Storm
The storm had no big effect on the result overall. Holmen reallocated resources to harvest more in storm-affected areas, including on other forest owners' land, and said the related cost impact was not significant.
Forest Division Split to Improve Focus
Holmen is splitting its forest business into Holmen Forest, focused on the company's own forest, and a separate wood-supply business area. Management said the move is intended to provide enough capacity to focus on the company's own forest and land, with potential to extract more value, while explicitly stating there is no plan to sell the forest or industry.
Renewable Energy Assets Continue to Generate Cash Flow
Holmen's energy assets have generated average cash flow of SEK 325 per megawatt hour over the last couple of years, which management said was also the level on a 12-month rolling basis. Reservoir water levels were described as more or less normal.
Grid Expansion Positive for Long-Term Capacity
Although grid maintenance temporarily reduced production capacity, the increased transmission capacity between SE3 and SE2 was described as beneficial for Holmen in the long term.
Wood Products Loss Narrowing
The wood-products division's loss is coming down due to lower wood costs. Management said the business is moving in the right direction, although it has not yet reached positive EBIT.
Active Capacity Adjustments in Wood Products
Holmen said it has already taken down capacity quite a lot at its large sawmill in southern Sweden and is continuously reviewing the sawmills in the north.
Healthy Board and Paper Order Books
The company described its board order book as healthy and its paper order books as okay, with the order books looking roughly the same as at the end of the second quarter. Board utilization was also described as better than the broader industry level.
Pricing Actions Under Discussion
The industry has announced price increases, mainly from January 1, and Holmen has also announced price increases in board. The company is discussing pricing with customers in both board and paper.
Emerging Growth in Alternative Paper Products
Volumes of traditional graphic paper shifted into virgin kraftliner or interliner are growing from a low level. Management said customers using the products are happy, although volumes are not yet large enough to have a meaningful effect on results.
Limited Near-Term Grid Curtailment Impact
Grid maintenance reduced renewable-energy result by approximately SEK 5 million-SEK 10 million in the third quarter, but Holmen does not expect an effect in the fourth quarter from those activities, while noting that unplanned work could still occur.
