Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive, supported by strong Enact performance and capital returns, substantial share repurchases and debt reduction, continued CareScout network and distribution expansion, and progress in managing Closed Block risk. However, the quarter included a net loss, a significant Closed Block loss, weaker Enact new insurance written and earned premiums, lower investment realizations, a litigation setback, and early indications that the annual assumption review could be materially unfavorable. Overall, the positive operational and capital-allocation developments significantly outweighed the stated challenges.
For 2026, Genworth expects the value of full year premium approvals and benefit reductions to be broadly in line with 2025 levels, contributing approximately $1 billion on a net present value basis; Enact expects to return approximately $600 million to shareholders, of which Genworth expects to receive around $485 million; Genworth expects to allocate between $275 million and $300 million to share repurchases; CareScout Services remains on track to achieve its $25 million revenue target, with investment of approximately $55 million; CareScout Insurance currently does not expect any additional capital investments in 2026 following the $85 million investment made in 2025; and the CareScout Quality Network is targeting at least 2,000 communities by the end of the year.
- Strong Enact Contribution and Capital ReturnsEnact delivered $132 million of adjusted operating income to Genworth in the third quarter, contributing to $102 million of adjusted operating income excluding the Closed Block. Genworth received $122 million in capital returns from Enact during the quarter.
- Expanded Share Repurchase Authorization and Cumulative BuybacksGenworth announced a $500 million expansion of its existing share repurchase program and surpassed $1 billion in cumulative repurchases since the program began in 2022. Through October 31, the outstanding share count had been reduced approximately 27%, from 511 million shares to 370 million shares.
- Continued Capital Allocation and Debt ReductionGenworth repurchased $80 million of shares during the quarter and an additional $40 million in October. It also retired $21 million of principal debt at a discount, reducing holding company debt to $747 million, while maintaining a cash interest coverage ratio of approximately 9x.
- CareScout Home Care Network ExpansionThe CareScout Quality Network's home care network expanded to more than 1,200 locations, providing 98% coverage of the U.S. population aged 65 and over.
- CareScout Senior Living Scale and Adviser GrowthThe senior living network grew to approximately 1,200 communities, supported in part by national partnerships with Atria Senior Living and Brookdale. CareScout also had more than 170 local advisers across 33 states and was making progress toward its target of at least 2,000 communities by year-end.
- Growth in CareScout Matches and Revenue TargetCareScout facilitated approximately 1,500 matches between care seekers and home care and senior living providers during the quarter, an increase from the second quarter. Year-to-date matches had approximately doubled from the same period last year. CareScout Services generated $7 million of third-quarter revenue and $19 million year-to-date, while remaining on track for its $25 million full-year 2026 revenue target.
- Broader CareScout Distribution and PartnershipsCareScout expanded its offerings through work with other insurance carriers, employers and select affinity groups. CareScout Insurance also launched Care Assurance Worksite in August, and the product had been approved in 40 states by the end of the third quarter.
- CareScout Platform and Long-Term Growth InvestmentsGenworth continued investing in CareScout's technology platform, new products, consumer and B2B channels, carrier partnerships and operational infrastructure. The company expects approximately $55 million of investment in CareScout Services during 2026 and described the platform as a scalable, capital-light business for long-term growth.
- Progress in Closed Block Risk ManagementThrough the end of the third quarter, Genworth had achieved approximately $35 billion of benefit reductions and premium increases on a net present value basis since 2012. In the quarter, it secured $44 million of gross incremental premium approvals at an average percentage increase of 34%. Full-year 2026 premium approvals and benefit reductions are expected to be broadly in line with 2025 levels, contributing approximately $1 billion on a net present value basis.
- Reduced Exposure to Higher-Risk LTC FeaturesApproximately 62% of policyholders offered a benefit reduction had elected one. Exposure to the 5% compound benefit inflation option declined to 35% from 57% in 2014, and the percentage of policies with lifetime benefits fell below 11% from 24% in 2014.
- New Family Caregiver BenefitGenworth announced a voluntary family caregiver benefit for eligible LTC policyholders in certain states who choose a benefit reduction alternative. The benefit can pay up to 75% of the median hourly cost of nonmedical care and is rolling out on a state-by-state basis as regulatory approvals are received.
- Strong Enact Capital and Insurance-in-Force MetricsEnact's primary insurance in force increased $1 billion sequentially and $3 billion year-over-year to $275 billion. Its estimated PMIERs sufficiency ratio remained strong at 158%, with approximately $1.8 billion above requirements.
- Enact Reserve Release and Favorable Reinsurance AgreementEnact reported a $37 million pretax reserve release driven by continued strong cure performance, resulting in a 20% loss ratio. Enact also secured a new forward quota share reinsurance agreement covering the 2028 book year at favorable market terms.
- Resilient Investment PortfolioGenworth said its investment portfolio remained resilient and conservatively positioned, with the majority of assets in investment-grade fixed maturities. New money yields exceeded yields on sales and maturities during the quarter, and cash in the life insurance companies was invested at average yields of approximately 6.5%, including alternative investments.
- Holding Company Liquidity and Enact OutlookThe holding company ended the quarter with $320 million in cash and liquid assets, supported by recurring capital returns from Enact. Enact now expects to return approximately $600 million of capital to its shareholders in 2026, and Genworth expects to receive around $485 million based on its approximate 81% ownership position.
- Updated Share Repurchase OutlookGenworth now expects to allocate between $275 million and $300 million to share repurchases for full-year 2026, subject to market conditions, business performance, holding company cash and the company's share price.
- Leadership Succession PlanThomas McInerney announced that he will retire as President and CEO at the end of 2026, with Jerome Upton expected to lead the next chapter alongside Angela Simmons and the management team.
