The call was predominantly positive. Emerson reported strong orders, sales, margins, earnings, free cash flow, backlog, project activity, and growth-vertical performance, while meeting its strategic objectives and remaining on track for its 2028 commitments. The principal challenges were persistent weakness in Europe and China, Middle East conflict exposure, modest growth in Intelligent Devices and Safety and Productivity, and a more cautious semiconductor outlook. Management nevertheless expressed confidence in the 2027 plan.

  • Share Repurchases and Dividend GrowthEmerson completed $1 billion of share repurchases in 2026, retiring 7.2 million shares. For 2027, the company plans to return approximately $3.8 billion to shareholders through $2.5 billion of share repurchases and $1.3 billion of dividends, including a 7% dividend-per-share increase of $0.16. This would represent the 71st consecutive year of increased dividends.
  • 2027 Guidance Supports Continued GrowthEmerson expects approximately 5% underlying sales growth in 2027, adjusted segment EBITDA margin of 29%, adjusted EPS of $7.25, up 10%, and free cash flow of $3.8 billion to $3.9 billion. The company expects 80 basis points of year-over-year margin expansion and has built 2% price realization into its plan.
  • Healthy Backlog and Project FunnelBacklog ended the quarter at $8.2 billion, up 11% year over year, with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.01. The project funnel increased $600 million to $13 billion, up 17% year over year, while growth-vertical opportunities increased $500 million sequentially.
  • Growth Verticals Continue to OutperformGrowth verticals increased 21% year over year in 2026 and represented 27% of Emerson's sales. Fourth-quarter growth-vertical sales increased 25%, including LNG up 68%, semiconductor up 43%, and power up 24%. Emerson expects low-double-digit growth from growth verticals in 2027.
  • Strength in Power and Long-Cycle ProjectsFourth-quarter orders were led by power, LNG, and aerospace and defense. Power activity broadened from fleet modernization to both brownfield and greenfield projects. Emerson's approximately $2.5 billion power business grew 25%, while its control-systems portion grew close to 45%.
  • Test and Measurement MomentumTest and Measurement orders grew 14% in the fourth quarter, including semiconductor orders up 59%, while sales increased 15%. Management said aerospace and defense and semiconductor demand remained strong, with high-single-digit growth expected over the next 12 months and similar margin expansion modeled for 2027.
  • Software and Systems Margin ExpansionSoftware and Systems sales increased 14% in the fourth quarter. Its margin rose 490 basis points to 32.3%, driven by volume leverage, price-cost, and mix. Annual contract value grew 10.1% year over year to $1.7 billion, and ACV is expected to grow approximately 10% in 2027.
  • AspenTech Integration Completed Ahead of ScheduleEmerson realized $100 million of AspenTech synergies and completed the integration two years ahead of its initial target. Management cited momentum in new product development, DeltaV technology integration, customer retention, and new-logo acquisition.
  • Large Customer and Project WinsEmerson won approximately $575 million from its project funnel in the fourth quarter, with 75% coming from growth verticals. Notable wins included a major petrochemical project in Qatar, LNG Canada's Phase 2 expansion that will double capacity from 14 to 28 million tons per annum, and a 10-year DeltaV MES subscription agreement with a global life sciences contract manufacturer.
  • Energy Security and LNG OpportunityApproximately 100 million tons per annum of the previously identified 315 million-ton-per-annum LNG opportunity were awarded in 2026, leaving an opportunity of 275 million tons per annum. Management also cited continued investment in gas production, downstream projects, pipelines, storage, transportation, power generation, grid modernization, and energy-security projects.
  • Middle East Business Continuity and Recovery OpportunityDespite the conflict in the Middle East, customers and Emerson teams found ways to maintain business continuity, and the region delivered stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter sales. Management expects high-single-digit Middle East growth in 2027 under a status-quo conflict scenario and identified $50 million to $75 million of remaining rebuild or rehabilitation opportunity.
  • Price-Cost and Cost-Reduction BenefitsFull-year margin expansion was driven by price-cost, cost reductions, and synergy realization. In the fourth quarter, price-cost and cost reductions more than offset inflation. Management expects normalized 2% pricing in 2027 and said positive price-cost should support the margin plan.
  • Positive Customer Response to Nigel AI AssistantManagement reported overwhelmingly positive customer feedback for the Nigel AI assistant in LabVIEW. Nigel is included in the highest LabVIEW tier, and Emerson is seeing clear migration of purchases toward that tier. The roadmap includes additional capabilities for autonomous workflows and automated test processes.
  • Capital Allocation FlexibilityEmerson intends to prioritize shareholder returns while retaining capacity for bolt-on acquisitions. Management said it will continue evaluating sub-billion-dollar opportunities, while large-scale acquisitions are not part of the current plan. The front-loaded share repurchase plan is intended to support the 2027 share count while preserving acquisition flexibility.
  • Organizational and Cultural StrengthManagement credited Emerson's 70,000 employees for the strong year and said the company met its strategic objectives one year into its three-year value-creation plan. The company said its culture of trust, empowerment, and accountability supports attracting and retaining talent and remains on track for its 2028 commitments.
  • Digital Enablement InvestmentEmerson plans to make approximately $25 million of incremental digital-enablement investment through 2027 to improve commercial tools supporting the sales force, contracting, HR systems, and the company's ability to leverage AI.
