Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive. Management reported record nine-month and quarterly profitability, broad-based revenue growth, record asset-gathering inflows, a record Corporate Bank quarter, resilient Investment Bank performance, strong capital levels, and raised full-year revenue guidance above €33 billion. The main challenges were elevated CRE-related provisions, an idiosyncratic credit event, margin compression in FICC financing, selected expense increases, and ongoing German competitive and reform uncertainty. Highlights significantly outweighed lowlights.
Company Guidance
For full year 2026, Deutsche Bank expects revenues above €33 billion assuming markets remain constructive, total expenses of around €21.3 billion, NII across key banking book segments and other funding to slightly exceed €14 billion, and loan loss provisions, excluding targeted proactive derisking actions and the idiosyncratic event, to be broadly in line with guidance and slightly lower in 2026 compared to the prior year; the bank expects a gradual but steady decline in CRE provisions in 2027 and, in 2028, the group provision run rate normalizing at around 30 basis points, while its CET1 ratio is expected to remain within its operating range of 13 and a half, 14%, capital deductions will continue in line with the 60% payout ratio target, and an RoTE of above 13% represents a floor.
Record Nine-Month Performance
Revenue reached €25.5 billion in the first 9 months of 2026, on track to meet the full-year ambition of around €33 billion. Profit before tax was a record €8.4 billion, post-tax RoTE was 11.5%, the cost/income ratio was 61.4%, and the CET1 ratio was 14.0%.
Strong Third-Quarter Results and Raised Revenue Outlook
Third-quarter net revenues were €8.3 billion, up 4% year on year for the 21st consecutive quarter of revenue growth. Profit before tax was €2.6 billion, up 8% year on year, and the cost/income ratio improved to 62.4%. Management raised its outlook to revenues above €33 billion for 2026, assuming markets remain constructive.
Capital Returns and Capital Strength
The bank maintained distribution deductions in line with its 60% payout ratio and completed its second share buyback of 2026, bringing total buybacks for the year to €1.5 billion. CET1 remained at 14.0%, at the high end of the operating range.
Focused Growth Areas Outperforming
Revenues grew 5% year on year, in line with the planned growth trajectory through 2028. Focus growth areas contributed nearly 80% of the revenue increase and grew 6%, with franchise growth rates above IDD targets.
Record Asset Gathering and Business Volumes
Assets under management increased by nearly €250 billion year on year to just under €2 trillion, supported by record inflows across asset-gathering businesses. Loans and deposits also grew year on year, supported by broad-based business activity.
Technology Transformation and AI Investments
The Private Bank selected its first cloud-based platform and plans to reduce its technology footprint from 15 banking platforms to 2. In IBCM, the bank began rolling out FarSide, an AI-enabled tool designed to improve efficiency and provide more granular client insights.
Broad-Based Divisional Profitability
All divisions delivered RoTE of 12% or higher, and each division increased profit before tax in every quarter of 2026. Management said all four businesses were contributing to the revenue trajectory.
Private Bank Growth and Record Inflows
Private Bank net flows reached a record €17 billion, with around two-thirds from wealth management, and year-to-date inflows had already exceeded the full-year 2025 level. Client assets rose to €865 billion, up €75 billion year to date. Private Bank revenues increased 8% year on year, net commission and fee income rose 13%, net interest income increased 9%, and RoTE reached 13%.
Asset Management Reaches €1.2 Trillion
Asset Management assets under management surpassed €1.2 trillion for the first time. Quarterly total net flows were a record €31 billion, including €17 billion of long-term net flows, with Xtrackers as the primary growth driver. Alternatives returned to positive net flows, including €0.8 billion into infrastructure products.
Corporate Bank Delivers Record Quarter
Corporate Bank revenues reached approximately €2 billion, the highest ever, and increased 9% year on year. Net interest income and net commission and fee income both grew by double digits. Germany revenue increased 13%, deposits rose 13% year on year to €346 billion, and loans increased 8% year on year to €127 billion.
Investment Bank Shows Resilience
Investment Bank revenues broadly matched the record prior-year quarter despite less favorable market conditions. FICC financing revenues were significantly higher, supported by strong pipeline execution and targeted balance-sheet deployment. IBCM increased its EMEA market share by 160 basis points year on year, while the global foreign exchange business was named World's Best FX Bank for the second consecutive year.
Expense Discipline and Positive Operating Leverage
Noninterest expenses were flat year on year and declined 3% sequentially in the third quarter, while revenue increased 4%, producing positive operating leverage. Operating efficiencies largely offset incremental investments, and full-year total expenses guidance remained around €21.3 billion.
Net Interest Income and Future Rate Benefits
Third-quarter net interest income was €3.7 billion, supported by deposit and loan volume growth and the hedge portfolio. Management continued to expect full-year net interest income across key banking-book segments and other funding to slightly exceed €14 billion, with benefits from recent rate decisions expected to become more pronounced in 2027 and 2028.
German Economic and Strategic Opportunity
Management reported encouraging signs in Germany, including improving corporate sentiment, investment activity, exports, entrepreneurial activity, and foreign investment. Deutsche Bank expects German growth in 2027 at around 1.5% or slightly higher, supported by fiscal stimulus and private investment, and identified pension reform as a potential catalyst for Private Bank and Asset Management activity.
Progress on Capital-Efficient Derisking
The high-risk commercial real estate portfolio in the U.S. declined 42% since 2022 and about 20% year on year. Management expects a gradual decline in CRE provisions in 2027 and further improvement in 2028, with the group provision run rate normalizing at around 30 basis points.
Selective Data-Center and AI Exposure
Data-center exposure remained below €10 billion, primarily focused on single-tenant, long-term leases with large hyperscalers. Management said the exposure was selectively managed, subject to counterparty limits and hedging programs, and was not a sole dependency for the Investment Bank's revenue outlook.
Regulatory Capital Benefits
The bank said its Pillar 2 requirement was lowered by 25 basis points for the second consecutive year. It also reported that securitization programs and other actions were progressing toward an approximately 100-basis-point capital benefit, with around three-quarters achieved from a benefit perspective.
