Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive overall. The company delivered broad-based organic growth, exceeded third-quarter expectations, expanded gross margin, increased adjusted EPS by 13.6%, raised its 2026 outlook and reported strong performance across domestic, international and specialty products. The main challenges were inflation, transportation costs, elevated promotional activity, consumer pressure and slower-than-expected TOUCHLAND growth, but management described productivity, innovation, distribution gains and international expansion as important offsets.
Company Guidance
For 2026, Church & Dwight expects organic sales growth of approximately 5% at the high end of its prior range of 4% to 5%, adjusted gross margin to expand approximately 100 basis points, marketing investments to remain at approximately 11% of sales, SG&A as a percentage of sales to remain above 2025 levels, an adjusted tax rate of approximately 21%, adjusted EPS of approximately 7%, tightening on its prior range of 6% to 8%, and cash from operations of approximately $1.175 billion; the outlook includes approximately $150 million of inflation, assumes roughly a crude oil price of $100 a barrel, and the fourth quarter outlook is organic sales growth of approximately 4% and adjusted EPS expected to increase 17% to 19% versus last year. For 2027, the company expects category growth of around 2.5%, another record year for productivity, growth from TOUCHLAND, and growth initiatives to be tailwinds in '27, '28 and '29.
Third-Quarter Results Exceeded Outlook
Net sales increased 1%, ahead of the outlook for a 1% decline. Organic sales grew 5.1%, well above the approximately 3% outlook, with growth across all three divisions. Volume increased 4.6% and price and mix contributed 0.5%.
Adjusted EPS and Operating Income Growth
Third-quarter adjusted EPS was $0.92, up 13.6% versus last year and above the $0.89 outlook. Adjusted income from operations increased $27 million, or 10.1%, to $298 million.
Gross Margin Expansion Despite Cost Headwinds
Gross margin increased to 46.8%, up 170 basis points versus last year. Productivity contributed 150 basis points, acquisition mix and portfolio actions contributed 160 basis points, and volume, price, mix and FX contributed 40 basis points.
Broad-Based Domestic Consumer Growth
U.S. Consumer organic sales increased 4.4%, driven by 3.6% volume growth and favorable price and product mix of 0.8%. Growth was broad-based across Household and Personal Care, led by ARM & HAMMER Liquid Laundry Detergent, THERABREATH, ARM & HAMMER Cat Litter and WATERPIK.
ARM & HAMMER Laundry and Litter Share Gains
ARM & HAMMER laundry detergent consumption grew over 4% while the laundry category grew about 2%, and the brand reached record shares across total laundry. ARM & HAMMER Cat Litter consumption grew 5.4%, with share increasing 0.6 points to 24%. The DUAL DEFENSE with Microban Clumping Litter launch continued to perform well.
THERABREATH Reached Record Share
THERABREATH gained 3.5 share points to reach a record 26.8% share and further solidified its number-two position in total mouthwash. THERABREATH Complete became the top-selling new rinse nationally, while household penetration remained 14% versus 65% for the mouthwash category.
THERABREATH Global and Toothpaste Expansion
Management said THERABREATH mouthwash is growing double digits while the category is flat, remains within 6 or 7 share points of LISTERINE, and has strong repeat rates and growing customer loyalty. In Japan, THERABREATH reached approximately 15% to 20% of distributor Graphico's sales within 12 months or less. THERABREATH toothpaste reached a 1 share point, with repeat rate approaching 30%.
HERO Innovation and Acne-Care Opportunity
HERO consumption outpaced the acne patch category, and the cleansers launch was described as off to a good start. Facial cleansers represent a $650 million category and approximately 30% of the total acne category, while HERO household penetration is 10% versus 30% for the category.
WATERPIK Delivered Double-Digit Sales Growth
WATERPIK delivered double-digit sales growth in the quarter and gained share in 2026.
Strong International Performance
International organic sales grew 7.8%, driven by 9.1% volume growth and partially offset by lower price and product mix of 1.3%. Growth was led by THERABREATH, BATISTE, TOUCHLAND and OXICLEAN, with nine international brands delivering double-digit growth.
Specialty Products Continued Its Growth Streak
The Specialty Products division delivered 5% organic sales growth, including 2.9% volume growth and 2.1% higher price and product mix. This marked the 11th consecutive quarter of organic growth for the division.
E-Commerce Growth Accelerated
Global e-commerce revenue grew 20% in the quarter, and global online sales represented 25.9% of total consumer sales. Management said the company had moved from a laggard to a leader in e-commerce growth.
Raised 2026 Sales and EPS Outlook
The company raised its 2026 organic sales growth outlook to approximately 5%, at the high end of the prior 4% to 5% range. Adjusted EPS growth is now expected to be approximately 7%, tightening the prior 6% to 8% range.
Fourth-Quarter and Cash Flow Outlook
Fourth-quarter organic sales growth is expected to be approximately 4%, with adjusted EPS expected to increase 17% to 19% versus last year. Full-year cash from operations is expected to remain approximately $1.175 billion.
Strong Cash Flow Conversion and Capital Flexibility
Cash from operations for the first nine months of 2026 was $841 million, representing 114% cash flow conversion. Capital expenditures totaled $92 million through the third quarter and are expected to be approximately $125 million, or about 2% of sales, for the full year. The Board authorized up to $1 billion in common stock repurchases, replacing the prior authorization.
Continued Investment in Brands, Growth Initiatives and Capabilities
Marketing investment reached 11.9% of sales in the third quarter, and the full-year outlook remains approximately 11% of sales. The company is continuing investments in international, e-commerce and AI capabilities, while advancing 2030 initiatives focused on expanding ARM & HAMMER, increasing THERABREATH in oral care and scaling the international business.
Productivity and 2027 Margin Tailwinds
Management expects record productivity in 2026 and another record year of productivity in 2027. The company also cited positive mix from innovation and portfolio actions, fixed-cost leverage as organic and reported growth become closer following the divestiture of $400 million of businesses, and continued use of its revenue growth management toolkit.
International M&A and Licensing Pipeline
The company is evaluating acquisitions outside the U.S. and said its international M&A process is becoming more repeatable and sustainable. International targets are generally expected to be number-one or number-two brands, gross-margin accretive and asset-light, with some additional latitude regarding factories and back-office operations. Management also said one licensed brand has already been brought back in-house and two or three others are being evaluated.
MISS MOUTH'S Early Performance
MISS MOUTH'S was described as off to a great start, with strong consumption numbers and strong performance during the Prime Day season. Management said it remains very optimistic about the brand.
