Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was mixed but constructive. Santander reported solid client growth, targeted loan expansion, stronger transactional deposits, expense growth well below inflation, improved efficiency, and better performance in newer credit cohorts. However, recurring net income and ROE remain below target, client and market NII were under pressure, wholesale one-off provisions affected the quarter, and asset-quality challenges persisted in agribusiness and retail segments. Management's outlook for 2027 was more positive, but the near-term macroeconomic and credit environment remains challenging.
Management said its expectation is that “things will improve in 2027,” with a “more positive” outlook for market NII, although there will be a “negative result in the agribusiness portfolio” that will be “better than what we had in 2026”; the hedged result is expected to be “significantly less than the loss that we posted in the first 9 months.” Management is “very optimistic in terms of NII growth in 2027,” but said, “I do not want to share any numbers.” The bank intends to grow in SMEs through transaction-linked credit and services-linked credit, with about 25% of the portfolio supported by Pronampe and FGO, depending on the environment and interest rates; changes in write-offs are expected to “normalize throughout 2027,” including secured consumer finance terms of “18 increasing to 21 months” and a mortgage exception of “455 days” versus “360 days” for the whole portfolio.
- Client Base and Santander Rewards GrowthSantander ended the third quarter of 2026 with 76.9 million clients, a 6% increase over 12 months. Santander Rewards reached around 700,000 clients; participants increased their spending by more than 10% versus clients with a similar pattern, with a similar pattern in investments.
- Loan Portfolio Growth in Targeted SegmentsYear over year, mortgage loans grew 10.3%, SMEs grew 8.5%, and consumer finance grew 9.1% even after the portfolio sale during the period. Large corporate lending maintained positive growth concentrated in the expanded portfolio.
- Improved Consumer Finance MixConsumer finance remained supported by a higher-quality mix and a greater share of new hybrid and electric vehicles. Over the past 12 months, the share of hybrid and electric vehicles in the total number of financed vehicles increased from 5%-20%.
- Retail Funding and Transactional DepositsSantander continued to increase the retail share of its funding. Transactional deposits grew 10% over the past 12 months, reinforcing gains in consumer primacy and improving the funding mix.
- Strong Cards and Insurance PerformanceDespite stricter credit selectivity and a decline in capital markets, fees showed a more positive trend. Cards and insurance maintained strong performance both quarter over quarter and year over year, while card growth was driven by higher transaction volume, especially among higher-income clients.
- Expense Discipline and Efficiency ImprovementPersonnel expenses performed favorably despite the partial impact of the new 4.6% collective bargaining agreement, and administrative expenses remained under control. Overall expenses grew well below inflation, and the efficiency ratio improved to 38.8%.
- Simplification and Digitalization ProgressIn 2026, Santander reduced its product lineup by more than 100 items, expanded portfolio digitization, and increased sales through digital channels. Management said these actions enhanced operational efficiency, while expense discipline supported continued investment in transformation initiatives and technology.
- Improvement in Short-Term Credit IndicatorsSantander observed a favorable short-term delinquency trend for the second consecutive quarter. The bank reported improvement in the SME segment, and newer cohorts showed 15- to 90-day NPLs much more under control, including compared with the rest of the financial system using Brazilian Central Bank data.
- Better Quality in Newer Loan CohortsManagement said the latest consumer finance cohorts were performing much better after adjustments for model cycles. The bank's selective approach, focus on more resilient customers, and lower appetite for certain clients were producing cohorts more aligned with its desired portfolio quality.
- Capital Allocation and Strategic PositioningSantander is allocating more capital toward lower-risk segments, including high-net-worth individuals, large corporates, and CIB, while using a more transactional approach for smaller legal entities. Management also highlighted asset rotation, secured lending, customer primacy, and the Santander Group's global capabilities as strategic foundations.
- More Positive 2027 Outlook for Market NIIManagement said its outlook for 2027 market NII is more positive than 2026. The agribusiness portfolio is still expected to post a negative result, but management expects it to be better than in 2026, with the result described as significantly less negative than the loss posted in the first nine months.
- SME Growth Opportunity Through Transactional RelationshipsSMEs remain one of the segments in which Santander wants to grow. Management said transaction-linked and services-linked credit, including cash management, receivables, and acquiring, will be the main relationship drivers for B1 and B2 clients rather than clean credit. Government programs support about 25% of the SME portfolio through Pronampe and FGO support and collateral.
