Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was predominantly positive. Management reported year-over-year EPS growth, narrowed 2026 guidance toward the top half of the initial range, initiated 2027 guidance reflecting 8% growth, reaffirmed 7% to 9% long-term growth targets, and highlighted substantial regulatory, capital deployment, customer growth and merger progress. The main challenges were higher operating and other costs, pending regulatory decisions, the gap between the Illinois revenue request and proposed amount, California desalination cost and approval issues, and the absence of consolidated post-merger guidance.
American Water now expects to achieve the top half of its initial EPS guidance range for 2026, narrowed to $6.07 to $6.12 per share; it initiated stand-alone adjusted earnings guidance for 2027 of $6.53 to $6.63 per share, reflecting 8% stand-alone EPS growth over 2026, and affirmed long-term targets of 7% to 9% EPS and dividend per share growth through 2031 and beyond, with or without Peoples. The company expects the merger to close by the end of the first quarter of 2027, expects 2027 investment of $4.1 billion, inclusive of acquisitions, more than $20 billion through 2030 and more than $48 billion through 2035, and its current financing plan for calendar year 2027 includes $2 billion to $3 billion of long-term debt financing; $1.5 billion of equity is anticipated in 2029. It also cited a 2027 revenue component of $1.70 to $1.80, an updated California desalination total cost estimate of $825 million plus AFUDC, and approximately 81,000 customer connections added across 10 states.
- Merger Approval ProgressAmerican Water reached constructive settlements in Pennsylvania, Texas and North Carolina during the third quarter, following earlier approvals in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia. Settlement discussions remain ongoing in New Jersey, an Illinois order is expected soon after the Administrative Law Judge's favorable recommendation, and the federal Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period expired in mid-August. The company continues to expect the merger with Essential Utilities to close by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
- Third-Quarter and Year-to-Date EPS GrowthThird-quarter adjusted earnings increased to $2 per share from $1.89 per share in the same period of 2025. First-nine-month adjusted earnings increased to $4.63 per share from $4.40 per share in 2025.
- 2026 EPS Guidance NarrowedBased on year-to-date results and the outlook for the remainder of the year, the company now expects to achieve the top half of its initial 2026 EPS guidance range and narrowed guidance to $6.07 to $6.12 per share.
- Strong Capital DeploymentAmerican Water invested $2.8 billion in capital projects and acquisitions through the first nine months of 2026 to renew infrastructure, improve resiliency, address water quality challenges, remediate PFAS and lead, and add new systems.
- Customer and Acquisition GrowthThe company added approximately 81,000 customer connections across 10 states through September and has already achieved its 2% customer growth target for 2026. This included the Nexus Water Group systems and eight other systems.
- 2027 Stand-Alone EPS Growth OutlookAmerican Water initiated 2027 stand-alone adjusted EPS guidance of $6.53 to $6.63 per share, reflecting 8% stand-alone EPS growth over 2026.
- Long-Term Growth Targets ReaffirmedThe company reaffirmed its long-term targets of 7% to 9% EPS growth and 7% to 9% dividend-per-share growth, stating that it expects consistent EPS growth through 2031 and beyond.
- Constructive New Jersey Rate Case OutcomeNew Jersey approved a $68 million annualized increase in water and wastewater revenues, with an authorized return on equity of 9.5% and a 54% equity component. New rates were implemented on September 15.
- Illinois Rate Case RecommendationIn Illinois, the Administrative Law Judge recommended a 9.67% return on equity and a 50% equity layer. A final order is expected no later than December 18, with new rates expected to be implemented on January 1, 2027.
- Regulatory and Capital ExecutionThe company said it continued its track record of regulatory execution, with new rates reflecting infrastructure investments for customers. It also has general rate cases in progress in five jurisdictions and expects new Kentucky rates to go into effect in 2027.
- Expanded Infrastructure Investment PlanAmerican Water expects 2027 investment of $4.1 billion, inclusive of acquisitions. From 2026 through 2030, it now expects to invest more than $20 billion, and through 2035 it expects to invest more than $48 billion. The increase reflects additional investment to address aging underground pipes, while PFAS and lead-and-copper compliance remain embedded in the plan at similar levels to prior expectations.
- Affordability and Customer Assistance FocusManagement stated that the average residential water bill across its footprint is expected to remain affordable for most customers for many years. The company plans to continue managing costs, designing and seeking approval for customer assistance programs and tariffs, and providing PFAS credits when polluters create cost-of-service issues.
- Neosho Investment CommitmentAmerican Water closed on the Neosho, Missouri water and wastewater systems, adding 5,900 connections each. The company plans to invest $35 million over the next five years to improve water and wastewater treatment quality for those customers.
- Acquisition PipelineAs of September 30, approximately 36,000 customer connections were under agreement across five states, representing $182 million. Management also said it had line of sight on signing asset purchase agreements in other communities and expressed confidence in its acquisition strategy going into 2027.
- Balance Sheet and Liquidity PositionThe company completed a $500 million long-term debt issuance on September 14 at 5.55%, which attracted strong demand. Debt-to-capital was 58% as of September 30, and management expects the ratio to improve by year-end as it settles remaining equity forward shares and to improve further after the all-stock merger.
- Military Services Group Growth OpportunityThe Military Services Group continues to provide organic revenue growth opportunities while serving 19 military installations. Management expects to submit a bid in the coming months to serve another U.S. Army base that may seek utility privatization proposals.
