Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 29, 2026|% Change Since:0.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive. Avery Dennison delivered better-than-expected third-quarter results, estimated stronger underlying growth after adjusting for destocking, generated robust free cash flow, expanded Solutions Group margins, raised the full-year guidance midpoint and highlighted significant Intelligent Labels, productivity and share-gain opportunities. These positives were tempered by ongoing customer destocking, Materials Group and company-level margin pressure, logistics declines, cautious consumer demand, cost inflation and the delayed Walmart Fresh commercial ramp.

Company Guidance

For full year 2026, Avery Dennison is narrowing adjusted EPS guidance to $10.10 to $10.24, with the new midpoint representing roughly 7% growth year-over-year; reported sales growth is expected to be approximately 5.5%, including organic sales growth of approximately 3.5%, approximately 1.5 points from currency translation, roughly 1 point from the Taylor Adhesives acquisition and approximate 40 basis point headwind from the calendar adjustment. Guidance includes incremental restructuring savings now exceeding $65 million, a net EPS benefit of approximately $0.30 from favorable currency translation and lower share count, stronger free cash flow targeting conversion of greater than 100% for the year, and capital expenditures anticipated approximately $240 million; the vast majority of the remaining balance of customer inventory destocking is expected to conclude by the end of the fourth quarter, which will also have an approximate 1.5% headwind to sales growth and modest headwind to EPS growth from the calendar shift, while Intelligent Labels food is expected to deliver robust growth next year, with a commercial ramp through '27 and double-digit growth over the next couple of years.

  • Strong Third-Quarter Results and Underlying GrowthOrganic sales grew 4% and adjusted EPS grew 2% year-over-year to $2.42, exceeding expectations. After considering customer inventory management, management estimated underlying organic sales growth of 6% and adjusted EPS growth of 8%.
  • Robust Free Cash Flow and Balance SheetAdjusted free cash flow was $246 million in the quarter and $716 million year-to-date, with conversion well above 100% of net income. Net debt to adjusted EBITDA improved to 2.2x, and the company expects full-year free cash flow conversion of greater than 100%.
  • Sales Growth Across Materials CategoriesMaterials Group organic sales increased 5%, with both high-value and base categories growing mid-single digits. High-value categories were led by Specialty and Durable Labels and Performance Materials, while base categories benefited from end-market growth, share gains and pricing.
  • Materials Group EBITDA Growth Despite HeadwindsMaterials Group adjusted EBITDA dollars grew slightly despite customer destocking and volatile cost inflation. Teams used productivity initiatives, material reengineering and pricing actions to cover inflationary costs on a dollar basis.
  • Solutions Group Profitability ExpansionSolutions Group organic sales increased 1%, with base categories growing low single digits and high-value categories comparable to the prior year. Adjusted EBITDA grew year-over-year and adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 80 basis points to 17.8%, as productivity more than offset higher employee-related expenses.
  • Embelex Growth Despite World Cup ComparisonEmbelex continued to deliver strong growth despite lapping a significant World Cup headwind, growing mid-single digits in the quarter. Vestcom sales increased low single digits.
  • Intelligent Labels Growth in Apparel and General RetailEnterprise-wide Intelligent Labels sales increased low single digits. Apparel and general retail sales rose approximately 10%, driven by program expansions and general retail recovery; apparel Intelligent Labels sales specifically grew roughly double digits in the quarter.
  • Food Intelligent Labels Commercialization MomentumFood adoption momentum continued to build through strong growth, another large grocery customer ramp, expanded pilot activity and progress toward commercialization with the largest U.S. grocery retailer. A third large grocer entered the early stages of commercial rollout, and the company said food Intelligent Labels growth is expected to be robust next year.
  • Long-Term Intelligent Labels OpportunityManagement said the food market represents at least a 200 billion unit opportunity and that the company is at the start of the adoption curve. Three large grocers are actively engaged, with multiple smaller pilots and trials underway across the United States and Europe.
  • Positive Apparel and Retail PipelineManagement expects apparel to remain a growth driver through 2027, supported by new RFID programs, additional loss-visibility traction and rollouts with major value retailers and other customers. General retail and general merchandise also continued to be positive.
  • Continued Logistics and Beauty Pilot ActivityAlthough logistics sales declined, the company continued expanding pilots with new logistics partners. It also has multiple beauty pilots underway focused on improving on-shelf availability and loss visibility.
  • Raised Full-Year Guidance MidpointThe company narrowed adjusted EPS guidance to $10.10 to $10.24 and slightly raised the midpoint, representing roughly 7% year-over-year growth. Full-year reported sales growth is expected to be approximately 5.5%, including approximately 3.5% organic sales growth, approximately 1.5 points from currency translation and roughly 1 point from the Taylor Adhesives acquisition.
  • Restructuring Savings and Productivity ProgressIncremental restructuring savings are now expected to exceed $65 million, compared with the prior starting target of $50 million. Management expects approximately $0.20 of carryover impact from these actions into 2027 and said both business groups continue to find ways to drive productivity.
  • Capital Returns and Portfolio InvestmentThe company returned approximately $135 million to shareholders during the quarter through $75 million in dividends and $60 million in share repurchases, bringing year-to-date capital returns above $480 million. It also invested approximately $80 million in ventures year-to-date and continued organic investment in the business.
  • Share Gains and Sustainability-Driven DemandManagement said the company has generally gained share in its Materials business across most regions since last year. Demand is being supported by sustainability requirements, including PPWR and extended producer responsibility requirements, as well as increased demand for filmic products where Avery Dennison has an advantage and greater vertical integration.
  • New Solutions Group LeadershipHelen Sheirbon was appointed President of the Solutions Group effective November 3. She brings over two decades of global leadership experience, most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Global HP Solutions.
  • Supply Capacity and Working Capital ExecutionManagement said it is not experiencing bottlenecks and can balance supply and demand effectively. Inventory turns improved during the year, supporting working capital productivity and the company's expectation of above-100% free cash flow conversion for 2026.
  • Vestcom Software ExpansionVestcom's storeLink software rollout is commencing with a significant U.S. grocery retailer. Management said these software-related businesses typically carry premium margins and that retailer interest in automation and in-store efficiency solutions has increased.
