Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Nov 05, 2026|% Change Since:0.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly optimistic, driven by more than $14 billion of signed CIS commitments, a forecast for CIS revenue of $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion in 2027, expected 17% to 22% total-company growth in 2027, and projected high CIS margins and returns. The main negatives were near-term supply-chain and data-center timing delays, declining delivery revenue, lower Q3 EPS, significant Q4 CapEx, and temporary margin pressure from CIS build-out costs. Management characterized the delays as resolved and maintained confidence in the longer-term outlook, so highlights significantly outweighed lowlights.

Company Guidance

For Q4 2026, Akamai projects revenue of $1.145 billion to $1.170 billion, up 5% to 7% as reported and in constant currency over Q4 2025, with foreign exchange fluctuations expected to have a negative $4 million impact on Q4 revenue compared to Q3 levels and a negative $5 million impact year-over-year, cash gross margin of approximately 70%, non-GAAP operating expenses of $368 million to $378 million, adjusted EBITDA margin of approximately 38%, non-GAAP depreciation expense of $165 million to $167 million, non-GAAP operating margin of approximately 24%, non-GAAP EPS of $1.50 to $1.70, taxes of $48 million to $54 million based on an estimated quarterly non-GAAP tax rate of approximately 18%, a fully diluted share count of approximately 149 million shares, and CapEx of approximately $2.445 billion to $2.645 billion; for full-year 2026, it expects revenue of $4.44 billion to $4.465 billion, up 6% as reported and up 5% to 6% in constant currency, CIS revenue growth of 40% to 42% year-over-year in constant currency, security revenue growth in the high single digits on a constant currency basis, delivery in other cloud apps to decline in the mid-single digits year-over-year on a constant currency basis, a positive $5 million foreign exchange impact, non-GAAP operating margin of approximately 25%, CapEx of $3.462 billion to $3.662 billion, and non-GAAP EPS of $6.47 to $6.68 based on a non-GAAP effective tax rate of 18.5% and a fully diluted share count of 148 million shares; it expects CIS revenue of $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion in 2027, total company revenue growth of 17% to 22% in constant currency year-over-year, 25% to 30% in the first half and 70% to 75% in the back half, and total company revenue surpassing $7 billion in 2028, while the $14 billion of signed CIS contracts is expected to generate approximately $2.2 billion of annual revenue when fully ramped, approximately 75% adjusted EBITDA margin, approximately 30% non-GAAP operating margin, an after-tax internal rate of return of approximately 13%, and non-GAAP average annual adjusted return on invested capital of approximately 15%, with revenue beginning to ramp in Q4 2026 and fully ramped by the end of 2028.

  • Major CIS Contract WinsAkamai signed an $11.6 billion, 7-year commitment with Anthropic to support CPU workloads, bringing total multiyear Cloud Infrastructure Services (CIS) commitments signed in 2026 to more than $14 billion.
  • CIS Revenue Ramp UnderwayTwo of the first three large CIS contracts, representing $2.8 billion in total contract value, are already generating revenue. The third contract is in final testing and is expected to begin generating revenue soon. The company expects the approximately $2.2 billion of annual revenue from the $14 billion of signed contracts to begin ramping in Q4 2026 and be fully ramped by the end of 2028.
  • Strong CIS and Company Growth OutlookAkamai expects CIS revenue to more than double in 2027 to $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion, with total 2027 revenue growth of 17% to 22% in constant currency. The company expects total revenue to surpass $7 billion in 2028, even without assuming additional revenue from the $9 billion Anthropic option.
  • Attractive CIS Profitability and ReturnsWhen fully ramped, the signed CIS deals are expected to generate approximately 75% adjusted EBITDA margin and approximately 30% non-GAAP operating margin. The company expects an after-tax internal rate of return of approximately 13% and non-GAAP average annual adjusted return on invested capital of approximately 15%.
  • CIS Pricing and Margin ProtectionAkamai said unit pricing in recent deals is much higher than in comparable deals signed earlier in the year. The $11.6 billion Anthropic contract includes pricing adjustments for hardware, memory, and other component costs, and the company said its margins are protected if prices rise before remaining orders are placed.
  • Efficient, Distributed Cloud InfrastructureAkamai expects to generate about $22 million of revenue per megawatt of contracted power for the large deals signed this year. Its distributed platform, more than 4,000 points of presence in 130 countries, large backbone, smaller data-center footprints, and CPU-focused infrastructure were cited as advantages for reducing networking and infrastructure costs and supporting lower-latency workloads.
  • CPU-Focused and Flexible AI InfrastructureMore than 90% of the servers Akamai is deploying are CPUs. The company said CPUs are more versatile, cost-effective, longer lasting, and more power efficient than GPUs for many enterprise AI workloads, and that existing CPUs can continue providing value across its platform 7 to 10 years later.
  • AI Platform ExpansionAkamai launched Akamai Inference and Akamai Agent Sandbox, adding inference and execution capabilities for training, real-time inference, and agentic workloads. The services are integrated with Firewall for AI and new agent security services.
  • Security Revenue Growth and Product StrengthQ3 security revenue was $622 million, up 9% year-over-year as reported and 10% in constant currency. Growth was led by web application firewall, API Security, and Guardicore Segmentation. Akamai said analysts at IDC and Forrester recognized it as a leader in each of those three product areas.
  • Strong AI-Related Security DemandAkamai said AI is a tailwind for security demand as AI agents, sensitive data usage, AI-enabled attacks, and human-like bots increase. Its offerings address malicious traffic, AI-related API exposure, bot and agent identification, workforce protection, and containment of security incidents.
  • LayerX Integration ProgressThe company said the LayerX integration is going well, with sales to major enterprises including a leading U.S. satellite and streaming TV company. LayerX received a 4.8 out of 5 customer satisfaction score in a recent report, and Akamai said it sees strong growth potential.
  • Solid Q3 Revenue PerformanceTotal Q3 revenue was $1.122 billion, up 6% year-over-year as reported and 7% in constant currency. CIS revenue was $109 million, up 34% as reported and 35% in constant currency. International revenue was $563 million, up 7% as reported and 9% in constant currency, representing approximately 50% of total revenue.
  • Cash Position and Funding FlexibilityAkamai ended Q3 with approximately $4.2 billion of cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. Management said it expects to fund CIS expansion, broader growth investments through 2028, and the 2027 convertible note maturity primarily through existing cash and operating cash flows, supplemented by measured incremental financing activities as appropriate.
  • Strong CIS Demand PipelineManagement described a very strong pipeline involving hundreds of customers, including substantial accounts, and said it has contracted for the power and data-center space needed to accommodate that demand. The company also said it is selectively walking away from deals that do not meet its profit or return-on-capital thresholds.
  • Physical AI and Sovereign AI OpportunitiesAkamai said it has already signed several large physical AI deals and views sovereign AI as a strong fit for its distributed platform. The company emphasized its ability to place workloads on appropriate hardware and close to robots, sensors, and users.
  • Delivery Business Stabilization and Pricing DisciplineAlthough delivery and other cloud applications revenue declined, management said the business has been broadly stable over the last four quarters, pricing is holding better than for a long period, and the company is being selective with large media deals and low-end or economically unattractive opportunities.
