Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive, supported by record Island Gold operating results, strong free cash flow, substantial shareholder returns, a strong net cash position, and progress on major growth projects. These positives were partly offset by the Island Gold shaft commissioning delay and 5% Phase 3+ capital-cost increase, lower Young-Davidson production following the seismic event, higher costs, lower Mulatos production, and slower-than-planned PDA development. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
Alamos expects consolidated production to increase 26% in the fourth quarter and remains on track to meet its revised annual guidance and full-year consolidated cost guidance; at Island Gold, underground mining rates are expected to exit the year at 2,000 tons per day, increase to 2,400 tons per day following shaft commissioning in mid-2027, and grades are expected to increase towards the top end of the annual guidance range in the fourth quarter, while costs are expected to decrease significantly in the fourth quarter and milling rates are expected to remain at steady-state levels of 10,000 tons per day until the mill expansion to 20,000 tons per day is complete in 2028, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2028; the Phase 3+ shaft expansion is now scheduled for completion mid-2027 and is expected to cost 5% higher than the $835 million budgeted, with mining rates expected to continue increasing above 2,000 tons per day in the first half of 2027 and ramp up to 2,400 tons per day in the second half of 2027; Young-Davidson is expected to run at about 5,000 tons per day from underground in the fourth quarter, with grades in the 17-18 range, stockpile grades around 0.3-0.4 grams, mill throughput at about 7,000 tons per day, about 300,000 tons of stockpile material, and some stockpile feed continuing in 2027; Mulatos is expected to achieve stronger production in the fourth quarter, with open pit mining at La Yaqui Grande complete in the first half of 2027 and residual leaching contributing through 2027; PDA’s initial capital remains $165 million, mill construction is targeted for completion in mid-2027, and lower production is expected during the second half of 2027; Lynn Lake remains on schedule for completion in the first half of 2029, with production expected to average 186,000 ounces over its first 10 years; and Alamos expects to nearly double its rate of production to approximately one million ounces annually by 2030 at substantially lower costs.
- Quarterly Gold Production Met GuidanceThird-quarter gold production was 119,000 ounces, in line with quarterly guidance. Record production from the Island Gold District offset lower planned production from Young-Davidson.
- Record Island Gold District PerformanceIsland Gold District production reached a record 68,700 ounces. Underground mining averaged a record 1,790 tons per day, up 15% from the second quarter, while the Magino Mill averaged a record 10,300 tons per day, a 16% quarterly increase.
- Fourth-Quarter Production Growth ExpectedHigher Island Gold underground mining rates and grades are expected to drive a 26% increase in consolidated production in the fourth quarter, supporting the company's revised annual guidance. Island Gold is expected to exit the year at 2,000 tons per day.
- Strong Quarterly Revenue and EarningsThe company sold 118,400 ounces of gold at an average realized price of $4,258 per ounce, generating quarterly revenue of $510 million. Reported net earnings were $166 million, or $0.40 per share, and adjusted net earnings were $184 million, or $0.44 per share.
- Positive Free Cash Flow GenerationQuarterly free cash flow was $76 million after reinvestment in growth and exploration, with all sites generating positive free cash flow. Year-to-date free cash flow reached $321 million, and the company is on pace for another year of record free cash flow.
- Shareholder Returns IncreasedThe company returned $22 million to shareholders during the quarter through its dividend and share buybacks. It repurchased an additional $17 million of shares in October, bringing year-to-date shareholder returns to $123 million.
- Legacy Gold Hedges Substantially EliminatedThe company repurchased 36,000 ounces of the remaining 50,000 ounces of legacy Argonaut Gold forward contracts since the second quarter. Since acquiring Argonaut in 2024, it has bought back 96% of the legacy gold hedges; an additional 3,000 ounces were eliminated in October, with the remaining 14,000 ounces expected to be eliminated before maturity in 2027.
- Strong Balance Sheet and LiquidityThe company ended the quarter with a net cash position of $397 million, described as over $400 million elsewhere on the call. It also received a $160 million anniversary payment related to the sale of its Turkish assets, with a final $150 million payment expected in October 2027.
- Island Gold Costs and Free Cash FlowIsland Gold District third-quarter total cash costs were $1,242 per ounce and mine-site all-in sustaining costs were $1,782 per ounce. The district generated $72 million of mine-site free cash flow after significant expansion capital and exploration investment.
- Magino Mill Reliability ImprovementsThe Magino Mill averaged design rates of 10,000 tons per day since June. Improved maintenance, mill upgrades, and supplemental ore feed from a temporary crusher supported the record quarterly throughput, while the mill expansion to 20,000 tons per day remains targeted for completion in 2028.
- Progress on Island Gold ExpansionThe Island Gold mill expansion remains expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2028, with excavation, concrete, structural steel, foundation, and refinery work progressing. Once the shaft and process plant expansions are complete, the district is expected to produce over 500,000 ounces annually.
- Lynn Lake Construction On ScheduleLynn Lake construction is advancing with the permanent camp commissioned and process plant foundation and site-wide infrastructure work underway. The project remains within budget and on schedule for completion in the first half of 2029, with expected production averaging 186,000 ounces over its first 10 years.
- Long-Term Production Growth PlanThe company expects the Island Gold shaft expansion in 2027, the Magino Mill expansion in 2028, and Lynn Lake production in 2029 to support nearly doubling its production rate to approximately one million ounces annually by 2030 at substantially lower costs.
- Young-Davidson Continued Positive Cash FlowDespite lower production following the June seismic event, Young-Davidson generated $30 million of mine-site free cash flow in the quarter and remains on track to achieve its revised annual production and cost guidance.
- Mulatos District Cash Flow and GuidanceThe Mulatos District generated $39 million of mine-site free cash flow while funding construction of the PDA project and exploration. The district remains on track to meet annual production guidance, with higher grades and stacking rates at La Yaqui Grande expected to support stronger fourth-quarter production.
- PDA Project Remains Within Initial Capital BudgetPDA received $25 million of capital development spending during the quarter, primarily for underground development, mill structural work, and the crushing circuit. Initial capital remains unchanged at $165 million, and mill construction is targeted for completion in mid-2027.
