Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 29, 2026|% Change Since:7.18%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive, supported by solid companywide revenue growth, record-level Engineered Solutions performance, strong cash flow, improved liquidity, dividend growth, and multiple growth initiatives in steel, sustainable aviation fuel, PFAS remediation, high-purity calcium, and waste-stream recovery. The principal challenges were concentrated in Consumer and Specialty, where energy, transportation, mining, and raw material inflation pressured margins, while several end markets remained soft. Management expressed confidence in pricing recovery and continued growth, but near-term profitability remains affected by cost volatility and seasonality.

Company Guidance

For the fourth quarter, MTI expects sales to be approximately $525 million, operating income between $60 million and $63 million, and EPS between $1.15 and $1.20; with 6 fewer days, the outlook represents high single digit sales growth on a days adjusted basis, with operating income and EPS at a similar level relative to last year. Consumer and Specialty sales are expected to be similar sequentially, with operating margin similar to the third quarter, Household and Personal Care growth at probably mid to high single digit growth and, on a days-adjusted basis, probably close to double digit growth, while Engineered Solutions sales are expected to decrease by approximately 10% sequentially. The company remains on track for full year mid single digit revenue growth, expects this rate continuing through 2027, and expects full year free cash flow around 6% of sales, with capital expenditures in the $95 million to $100 million range. Assuming costs stabilize in the first quarter, Consumer and Specialties is well positioned to be at 12%+ in the second quarter of next year, the company at 14%+ in the second quarter of next year, and at a 14.5%, 15% run rate in the second half of next year; the company expects higher margins in 2027 and mid single digit top line growth next year. Long-term targets include an average of 5% through the cycle, an operating margin of 15% in the near term and the potential to move above 15%, a 7% conversion rate, and a 12% return on invested capital target; high purity calcium metal is expected to drive over $100 million in incremental revenue in the next 3 to 5 years, while the steel slag opportunity could be greater than $250 million in the U.S.

  • Strong Cash Flow GenerationYear-to-date cash from operations was $171 million, up 32% versus last year. Third-quarter cash from operations totaled $76 million, while third-quarter free cash flow was $52 million and year-to-date free cash flow was $97 million. The company remains on track for full-year free cash flow of around 6% of sales.
  • Improved Liquidity and Debt Maturity ProfileThe company completed a private offering for $400 million of senior notes due in 2032 and used the proceeds to redeem senior notes due in 2028. It also extended the maturity of its revolving credit facility and expanded capacity to $500 million. Liquidity increased by over $160 million year over year to $868 million, while net leverage decreased to 1.5x EBITDA.
  • Dividend IncreaseThe Board authorized an 8% increase in the regular quarterly dividend to $0.13 per share. This was the fourth consecutive year of dividend increases.
  • Long-Term Financial Targets ReaffirmedAt Investor Day, management reaffirmed its target of approximately 5% average revenue growth through the cycle, a return to a 15% operating margin in the near term with potential to move above 15%, a 7% free cash flow conversion target, and a 12% return on invested capital target.
  • Large Innovation PipelineManagement estimated the current new product pipeline at $1.4 billion in revenue potential and highlighted innovations intended to expand the company into higher-growth, higher-value markets.
  • High-Purity Calcium OpportunityThe company has developed a process to produce high-purity calcium metal, has production in place, is expanding capacity, and has qualified the product in heavy rare-earth metallization processes including dysprosium and yttrium. Management estimates this opportunity could generate over $100 million in incremental revenue over the next 3 to 5 years.
  • Steel Slag and Waste-Stream Technology DevelopmentThe company plans to pilot its crystal engineering technology for steel slag and other waste streams, with a pilot decision expected early next year and deployment potentially around the middle of next year. Management cited a $10 million to $15 million estimated pilot-plant capital requirement, a stated $150 million opportunity for steel slag conversion, and an estimated addressable market greater than $250 million in the U.S. for the steel slag opportunity alone.
  • Fourth-Quarter Outlook Maintains Growth on a Days-Adjusted BasisFourth-quarter sales are expected to be approximately $525 million, with operating income between $60 million and $63 million and EPS between $1.15 and $1.20. Although the quarter has six fewer days than the prior-year quarter, management said the outlook represents high single digit sales growth on a days-adjusted basis, with operating income and EPS at a similar level to last year.
  • Solid Companywide Revenue GrowthThird-quarter sales were $555 million, up 4% versus the prior year, while year-to-date sales were up 6%. Management said the company remains on track for its full-year mid single digit revenue growth target and expects this growth rate to continue through 2027.
  • Record-Level Engineered Solutions PerformanceEngineered Solutions delivered another strong quarter, with sales up 9% year over year, operating income up 9%, and operating margins of 17.6%. Management said the segment is on track for a record year.
  • Growth in High Temperature Technologies and Steel MarketsHigh Temperature Technologies sales increased by $13 million versus the prior year in the third quarter and were up 7% year to date. Growth was driven by strong sales to steel and foundry customers, new MINSCAN 6 installations, new calcium wire contracts at two greenfield steel plants scheduled to come online next year, and continued penetration in North American electric arc furnace markets.
  • Environmental and Infrastructure MomentumEnvironmental and Infrastructure sales increased by $8 million versus the prior year in the third quarter, were up 11% year over year in the quarter, and were up 16% year to date. Demand was stronger for drilling products, environmental project solutions, building materials, and infrastructure products.
  • Consumer and Specialty Growth Initiatives ProgressingConsumer and Specialty year-to-date sales were up 3%. Household and Personal Care sales were up 4% year to date, driven by 6% growth in cat litter and 11% growth in natural oil purification. Specialty Additives sales were up 2% year to date, driven primarily by growth initiatives in Asia.
  • Natural Oil and Renewable Fuel Purification RampEdible oil and renewable fuel purification sales increased 21% sequentially in the third quarter, and volumes exited the quarter 33% above the second-quarter run rate. Management attributed the ramp to new capacity, customer qualifications, and increased penetration of the sustainable aviation fuel market, including multiple new refinery locations.
  • Fabric Care Additives Beginning to ScaleSales of Fabric Care additives moved higher in the third quarter and management expects further growth in the months ahead. A partner launch in the dry fabric care market is now described as being on track, with a stated $20 million growth opportunity.
  • Strong PFAS Remediation PipelineThe company converted four drinking water pilots into full-scale commercial implementations year to date and has four more scheduled over the next two quarters. Management also cited 10 full-scale municipal drinking water installations scheduled for next year, eight additional systems specified and awaiting award, and activity in military, international, soil, and in situ remediation markets.
