Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Profitability And ROE RecoveryThe return to profitability and improved ROE indicate a healthier earnings base than in 2021–2023. If sustained, this can strengthen internal funding capacity and improve resilience across the steel cycle.
Improving Balance-sheet LeverageLower leverage and a growing equity base provide greater financial flexibility during periods of weaker steel demand or pricing. This reduces balance-sheet risk, although profitability remains too modest to remove cyclical sensitivity.
Latest Cash-flow RecoveryPositive operating and free cash flow in 2026 suggests that the earnings recovery is converting into cash rather than remaining purely accounting-based. Continued conversion would support reinvestment, debt management, and shareholder returns.
Bears Say
Structurally Thin Operating MarginsVery thin operating margins leave limited protection against increases in raw-material costs, wages, or weaker selling prices. Small changes in demand or pricing can therefore cause disproportionate swings in operating earnings.
Softening Revenue MomentumRecent revenue contraction indicates that the earnings recovery is not yet supported by sustained top-line expansion. Without renewed demand or share gains, fixed-cost absorption and long-term profit growth may remain constrained.
Historically Inconsistent Cash GenerationRepeated periods of negative operating and free cash flow show that cash conversion has not been dependable through the cycle. This can restrict investment and shareholder distributions, making the 2026 rebound important but not yet proven durable.
