Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly optimistic. CSB Bank reported strong profit, net interest income, balance-sheet growth, liquidity, capital, and asset-quality metrics, while management said technology and distribution investments are beginning to support the scale phase. The main challenges were elevated operating expenses, a still-developing CASA franchise, moderate SME growth, gold concentration, potential fee-income pressure from regulatory changes, and macroeconomic uncertainty. Management nevertheless expressed confidence in improving SME and retail momentum and stronger profitability from FY 2028 onward.
Management said the bank will grow 30%-50% faster than the system, with “this year” growing “like this only” and faster growth expected from FY 2028 onwards, subject to building the liability franchise; CASA will grow faster than TD from FY 2028, gold should be around 50% of the mix by the end of this year versus 54% last year, with a glide path to 32% gold by 2030, SME growth will start “from this quarter onwards,” and unsecured business will start “probably FY 2028 onwards.” Guidance for ROA was “somewhere between this and 1.5%” this year, “cross 1.5%” next financial year, with an objective of 1.5%-1.8%, “Probably closer towards 1.5%,” and eventually “somewhere close to a 1.8%”; NIM is targeted at 3.75%-3.8%, “below 4%,” with 18%-20% fee to total income expected next year, cost of funds targeted at “somewhere around 6%” next financial year versus 6.55%, and any insurance-related impact estimated at 0.5% here and there, or 1% here and there, in overall fee income to overall income.
- Strong Quarterly ProfitabilityNet profit stood at INR 183 crore in Q2 FY 2027, up 22% sequentially and 14% year over year. Operating profit grew 10% sequentially to INR 276 crore.
- Healthy Net Interest Income and Margin ImprovementNet interest income was INR 510 crore, growing 7% quarter on quarter and 20% year over year. NIM improved to 3.81% from 3.66% in Q1 FY 2027, supported by asset-quality improvement, careful yield management across wholesale and SME businesses, stronger gold yields, and stable cost of funds.
- Improved Return MetricsROA improved to 1.29% from 1.09% in Q1 FY 2027, while ROE increased to 14.74% from 12.71%. EPS rose to INR 42 from INR 35 in the prior quarter.
- Strong Balance Sheet GrowthDeposits grew 18% year over year and gross advances grew 22% year over year. Management said the bank continues to target growth 30%-50% faster than the system, although system growth was unusually strong this quarter due to FCNR-related factors.
- Comfortable Liquidity PositionThe bank reported a CD ratio of 90.39%, average LCR of 127%, and NSFR of 124%. Management said liquidity risk was managed well and funding was optimized through deposits, domestic and foreign-currency borrowings, certificates of deposit, refinance, and other sources.
- Stable Asset Quality and Strong Provisioning CoverageGNPA and NNPA stood at 1.58% and 0.33%, respectively. PCR was 87% including PWO and 79.19% excluding PWO. The bank held a provisioning buffer of around INR 177 crore above regulatory requirements, while credit cost was 24 basis points for the quarter.
- Strong CapitalizationCRAR stood at 19.55% and Tier 1 capital stood at 18.54%, both well above regulatory requirements. Management also said the proportion of risk-weighted assets remained lower than the industry.
- Robust Gold and Corporate Banking GrowthGold and corporate segments grew 36% and 44% year over year, respectively. Management attributed the improvement in gold yields to the bank's distribution reach and an opportunity to price more effectively relative to competitors.
- Core Fee Income MomentumCore fee businesses, including bancassurance and processing fees, performed strongly. Core fee income grew around 23%-24% year over year in one reference and around 27% in the detailed discussion, while core fee income was just short of 15% of total income and overall fee income was just short of 18%. Overall fee income grew around 20% quarter on quarter.
- Technology Transformation Beginning to Pay OffManagement said the technology transformation completed over the last 18 months is starting to pay off. Capabilities were added across digital infrastructure, ServiceNow-based internal platforms, CRM, virtual relationship management, supply chain, cash management, trade, corporate net banking, OBDX, and OFSAA.
- Expansion of Distribution and Customer FranchiseThe bank had 872 branches and 844 ATMs as of September 2026. Management said investments in metro and urban markets are beginning to show results through stronger deposits and assets, and the bank is expanding its geographical footprint across North, West, South, and East India.
- Improving SME and Wholesale OutlookManagement said most portfolio-related SME issues from the last one year to one and a half years have been corrected and that SME growth is expected to start improving from this quarter. Wholesale banking momentum was described as strong across corporate banking, mid-market, and financial institutions.
- Disciplined Retail and MSME Growth StrategyThe bank is prioritizing secured, income-generating, and collateral-backed assets. Unsecured lending will remain calibrated and largely limited to well-underwritten existing customers, while MSME growth is expected to accelerate now that the operating structure, leadership team, and portfolio quality are in place.
- Positive Medium-Term Profitability OutlookManagement expects ROA to be somewhere between the current level and 1.5% this year and said it can safely cross 1.5% next year, with an objective of 1.5%-1.8%. It also aims to reduce cost of funds from 6.55% to somewhere around 6% next financial year and expects fee income to total 18%-20% of income over the longer term.
