Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Operational Capacity RampThe Chapleau saw line reaching ~90% of target and a 60% production ramp is a durable capacity improvement. Higher steady-state throughput and better grade/recovery enhance long-term production flexibility and lower unit costs once fully stabilized, supporting sustainable margins.
Completed Capital Projects (Planer & Cogeneration)Completion of the planer and cogeneration refurbishments is a structural uplift: improved recovery and product quality increase sellable output per log and cogeneration can lower net energy costs, both supporting ongoing margin improvement and competitive mill economics over multiple years.
Improved Liquidity Via Government FinancingMaterial government-backed financing meaningfully extends the company's runway and reduces immediate refinancing risk. While not a substitute for operating cash generation, these structural inflows provide time to complete integrations, capture project benefits, and pursue disciplined deleveraging actions.
Bears Say
Deep Negative ProfitabilityPersistent, large negative margins indicate the core manufacturing economics are currently loss-making. Unless product prices, mix, or cost structure materially improve, sustained negative EBITDA and net losses will impair retained earnings, restrict reinvestment, and keep refinancing risk elevated.
Rising Leverage And Weakened Balance SheetDebt nearly double equity raises structural financial risk: higher interest and covenant exposure constrain strategic flexibility. If operating losses persist, leverage impairs credit access, increases refinancing needs, and elevates the probability of asset sales or equity dilution to restore solvency.
Poor Cash Generation And Working Capital StrainMulti-year negative operating and free cash flow plus large working-capital outflows indicate the business is not self-funding. Structural cash burn forces reliance on external financing, which can be costly or scarce in downturns, limiting ability to execute capex or absorb market shocks over the medium term.
