Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Capex Financing Via Act 258 SecuritizationAnalyst points out that planned use of a single securitization under Act 258 to fund part of the company's capital program would reduce near-term balance-sheet pressure and improve financing visibility.
Capital Markets Access And SettlementAnalyst highlights that formation of a global settlement framework combined with restored capital markets access has shifted the narrative away from survival concerns and supports improved investor confidence.
Multi-year Capital Plan Enabling Grid ModernizationAnalyst emphasizes that an expanded multi-year capital spending plan enables targeted investments in grid resilience and modernization, which could strengthen long-term operational performance.
Bears Say
Rebasing Filing Rejection RiskAnalyst notes that the planned alternative rebasing filing is a decisive determinant of the earnings path and could be rejected or converted to a traditional rate case, which would lower investor expectations.
Unresolved Wildfire Liability And Recovery FundAnalyst cautions that absence of an enacted wildfire recovery fund design and an undefined liability cap leaves significant exposure that could materially harm equity holders if political decisions allocate costs unfavorably.
Valuation Run-up Ahead Of DeliverablesAnalyst warns that the stock's recent advance appears driven by technical momentum rather than secured outcomes, creating downside risk if key regulatory deliverables do not materialize.

Hawaiian Electric
Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc. (HE) operates as a diversified holding company primarily focused on three key areas within the state of Hawaii: electric utility services, banking, and investments in renewable and sustainable infrastructure. The company's Electric Utility division is responsible for the generation, acquisition, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity across several Hawaiian islands, including Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, and Molokai. This segment utilizes and explores various clean energy sources, such as wind, solar, photovoltaic, geothermal, wave, hydroelectric, municipal waste, and other biofuels. Its customer base includes suburban communities, resort properties, United States armed forces installations, and agricultural operations. Through its Bank segment, the company runs a community financial institution that provides a full spectrum of banking and financial offerings to both consumers and businesses. These services include savings and checking accounts, along with a wide range of loans, encompassing residential and commercial real estate, mortgages, construction and development, multifamily residential and commercial real estate, consumer, and general commercial lending. This banking arm maintains a network of 42 branches throughout the islands: 29 on Oahu, 6 on Maui, 4 on Hawaii, 2 on Kauai, and 1 on Molokai. The "Other" segment is dedicated to strategic investments in non-regulated renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure projects exclusively within the Hawaiian Islands. HE Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call conveyed a mix of significant strategic and regulatory progress (WMP approval, securitization plans, major RFPs, credit rating upgrades, solid liquidity, and a clear investment pipeline) alongside near-term financial headwinds (material declines in core net income and EPS, rising O&M and insurance costs, higher interest expense, and reduced regulatory incentive payouts). Management emphasized execution, affordability measures, and regulatory remedies (rate rebasing, Phase Six proposals) to address structural cost pressures. While core operating earnings are under pressure this year, the risk-reduction progress, regulatory approvals, and financing plans provide constructive momentum.View all HE earnings summariesHE Stock 12 Month Forecast
