Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
High Profitability & MarginsKinder Morgan's trailing margins (gross ~54.9%, operating ~31.1%, net ~19.3%) reflect durable fee-based contracts, scale in pipelines/terminals, and cost discipline. Sustained high margins support long-term cash generation, dividend funding, and reinvestment capacity across commodity cycles.
Strong Operating Cash ConversionOperating cash flow nearly twice net income (TTM ~1.93x) indicates reliable cash conversion from earnings. This durable cash generation reduces dependence on markets for routine funding, underpins dividend coverage, and helps finance multi-year expansion capex and acquisitions internally.
Large Backlog And Project PipelineA shadow backlog exceeding $10B and a sanctioned pipeline support multi-year growth; management projects >$3B/year expansion CapEx and has projects progressing on schedule. This structural project pipeline provides predictable long-term fee and EBITDA growth when converted to service.
Bears Say
Meaningful LeverageLeverage near a 1.0 debt-to-equity ratio and net debt/adjusted EBITDA around mid-3x limits balance-sheet optionality. Persistent leverage heightens sensitivity to rate moves and refinancing cycles, constraining aggressive buybacks or opportunistic M&A without increased leverage or asset sales.
Free Cash Flow VolatilityDespite positive operating cash flow, FCF has been uneven and fell sharply TTM (~61.7%), with FCF only ~58% of net income. Such volatility complicates multi-year capital planning and makes dividend and expansion funding more reliant on timing of project cash-ins and commodity-related receipts.
Project Timing & Partner Execution RiskDelays and partner negotiation friction on key expansions (e.g., Western Gateway) pose execution risk. Slower contract signings or partner timing push out revenue ramps and EBITDA contribution from capital projects, reducing near-term visibility on backlog conversion and returns.

Company Description
Kinder Morgan
Kinder Morgan, Inc. operates as a leading energy infrastructure company across North America. Its extensive operations are categorized into four primary business segments: Natural Gas Pipelines, Products Pipelines, Terminals, and CO2. The Natural Gas Pipelines segment manages a vast network of interstate and intrastate natural gas pipelines, along with underground storage systems. This includes natural gas gathering systems, processing and treatment facilities, natural gas liquids fractionation plants, transportation systems, and infrastructure for liquefied natural gas liquefaction and storage. Within its Products Pipelines segment, the company owns and operates pipelines designed for refined petroleum products, crude oil, and condensate, supported by associated product terminals and facilities for petroleum pipeline transmix. The Terminals segment involves the ownership and operation of both liquid and bulk terminals that are utilized for storing and handling a wide array of commodities, such as gasoline, diesel fuel, various chemicals, ethanol, metals, and petroleum coke. This division also includes the ownership of tankers. Lastly, the CO2 segment is dedicated to the production, transportation, and marketing of carbon dioxide, primarily for enhanced oil recovery from mature oil fields. This segment also holds interests in or operates oil fields and gasoline processing plants, oversees a crude oil pipeline system located in West Texas, and manages renewable natural gas (RNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. In total, Kinder Morgan owns and operates approximately 83,000 miles of pipelines and 143 terminals. The company, initially named Kinder Morgan Holdco LLC, officially changed its name to Kinder Morgan, Inc. in February 2011. Founded in 1936, its corporate headquarters are situated in Houston, Texas.
0JR2 Earnings Call
Q2 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was broadly positive: management reported a record quarter with strong YoY growth in adjusted EBITDA and adjusted EPS, raised full-year guidance, maintained a healthy dividend, and highlighted a large pipeline of growth opportunities (shadow backlog >$10B) with major expansion projects progressing on time and on budget. Key concerns were manageable: a modest reported backlog decline (largely due to projects placed in service), localized volume softness in products pipelines (partly related to Double H conversion), partner/contract timing for some large projects (e.g., Western Gateway) and typical commodity and supply-chain uncertainties that could affect near-term visibility. Overall, the positives materially outweigh the listed challenges.View all GB:0JR2 earnings summaries0JR2 Revenue Breakdown
