Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Revenue & EBITDA GrowthSustained top-line and EBITDA expansion, coupled with an upward revision to full-year 2026 guidance, indicates durable demand for post-acute services and ongoing operating leverage. This strengthens predictable cash flow generation and supports reinvestment and debt service over the medium term.
Improved Leverage & High ROEMaterial de-risking of the capital structure and persistent high ROE reflect efficient capital deployment and greater financial flexibility. Lower leverage reduces refinancing risk and supports continued investment in growth initiatives, buybacks, and dividends across the 2–6 month horizon.
Development Pipeline & Capacity ExpansionA sizable, staged expansion pipeline and targeted bed adds address strong demand and high-occupancy markets. New and small-format hospitals expand market presence, provide incremental revenue capacity, and create multi-year growth optionality tied to structural demand for post-acute care.
Bears Say
Weakened Free Cash Flow ConversionA sharp TTM decline in free cash flow conversion versus net income signals pressure from higher CapEx, working capital, or timing items. This undermines cash available for discretionary uses and increases sensitivity to funding needs despite healthy operating cash flow trends.
Medicare Advantage & Regulatory RiskVariability in Medicare Advantage utilization and ongoing regulatory implementations (TEAM, RCD expansion, CMS rule activity) create durable reimbursement and admission uncertainty. These factors can persist for months, complicating volume predictability and revenue per discharge.
Capacity Constraints In High-Demand MarketsSignificant occupancy saturation in a subset of hospitals limits same-store discharge upside until bed additions or small-format sites come online. Capacity bottlenecks can structurally cap near-term organic growth and require capital deployment to convert demand into realized revenue.

Company Description
Encompass Health
Encompass Health Corporation delivers a range of post-acute healthcare services across the United States, offered both in dedicated facilities and directly within patients' homes. The company's operations are divided into two primary divisions: Inpatient Rehabilitation, and Home Health and Hospice. Its Inpatient Rehabilitation division specializes in providing focused recovery treatment, available on an inpatient or outpatient basis. This care is designed for individuals recuperating from significant health challenges such as strokes, neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary issues, brain and spinal cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations. The Home Health and Hospice segment primarily serves the Southeast and Texas regions. Within this segment, home health services encompass a variety of Medicare-certified care options for adult patients, including skilled nursing, medical social work, home health aide assistance, and various therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Hospice services, on the other hand, provide in-home comfort and support for terminally ill patients and their families. As of June 1, 2022, Encompass Health maintained a substantial network, managing 149 hospitals, 252 home health locations, and 99 hospice locations spread across 42 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. The company, which established its roots in 1983 and is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, was formerly known as HealthSouth Corporation until its name change to Encompass Health Corporation in January 2018.
