Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Improving ProfitabilityRecovery to mid-single-digit net margins and ~10% EBITDA in 2025 signals operational leverage and better cost/price mix versus prior loss-making periods. Sustained positive margins support reinvestment, dividendability, and buffering of cyclical downturns if the company keeps margin discipline.
Stronger Cash Generation In 2025Material recovery in operating cash flow and a ¥31.3B free cash flow outcome demonstrate renewed ability to self-fund operations, capex, or debt reduction. Improved cash generation is a durable financial strength if working-capital volatility is managed and supports strategic choices over coming quarters.
Diversified, Recurring B2B Revenue StreamsBroad product mix (printing inks, pigments, resins, specialty materials) and long-term supply relationships create structural revenue durability across end markets. Diversification across packaging, coatings and electronics reduces dependence on any single end-market cycle and supports consistent order flow.
Bears Say
Sharp Revenue DeclineA >30% top-line collapse materially reduces scale advantages and puts pressure on fixed-cost absorption and working capital. Even with margin improvement, sustained revenue recovery is required to lock in profitability gains; otherwise margin progress may prove temporary if volumes don't stabilize.
Elevated LeverageDebt-to-equity near 1.0 leaves limited flexibility to pursue acquisitions or aggressive capex and raises refinancing risk in a downturn. While improving, this structural leverage level constrains the balance sheet's ability to absorb another cyclical hit and increases the urgency of sustained cash generation.
Inconsistent Cash ConversionWide swings in free cash flow and working-capital outcomes across years indicate earnings do not reliably convert to cash. That inconsistency complicates capital allocation planning, increases execution risk for deleveraging or dividends, and reduces confidence in repeating FCF performance.
