Q1 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call had a strongly positive tone, supported by 6.9% total revenue growth, 13.2% MedTech growth, sustained double-digit Auryon growth, strong AlphaVac and NanoKnife performance, improved profitability, a debt-free balance sheet, and maintained fiscal-year guidance. The principal challenges were the year-over-year AngioVac decline, sequential NanoKnife disposable seasonality, cash usage in Q1, tariff and inflation-related margin factors, an ongoing adjusted loss outlook, and the need for broader NanoKnife reimbursement. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
For fiscal 27, AngioDynamics continues to anticipate net sales of $336 million to $341 million, representing growth of between 5% to 6.5% over 2020 revenue of $320.2 million; MedTech net sales are expected to grow 12% to 15% year over year and MedDevice sales to be roughly flat, while gross margin is expected to be in the range of 54% to 55%, adjusted EBITDA in the range of $13 million to $16 million, and adjusted loss per share in the range of $0.29 to $0.24. The company remains on track to generate positive cash flow from operations for the full fiscal year, is targeting approximately 10% of sales for R&D going forward, expects mechanical thrombectomy to continue to grow with AngioVac in the single digit growth and AlphaVac driving that growth, and expects the impact from tariffs to be broadly similar to fiscal 26 based on its current view of the tariff situation, but this remains dynamic and clearly subject to change.
- CEO Succession Plan CompletedThe board completed its search for a successor, and Eric Honer will become President and Chief Executive Officer effective November 2. He brings more than 20 years of medical device and life sciences leadership experience, including roles at Getinge, Abbott Vascular, Becton Dickinson, CareFusion, and Boston Scientific. Jim Clemmer will remain closely involved to support a smooth transition.
- Revenue Growth Led by MedTechFirst-quarter revenue increased 6.9% to $80.9 million, driven by growth across the medtech segments. MedTech revenue increased 13.2% to $39.9 million and represented 49% of total revenue, compared with 47% a year ago. The company remains on track for MedTech to comprise a majority of total revenue during fiscal 2027.
- Auryon Delivers 21 Consecutive Quarters of Double-Digit GrowthAuryon revenue increased 14.7% to $18.9 million. The platform delivered its 21st consecutive quarter of double-digit year-over-year growth, supported by customer expansion in hospital and office-based laboratory settings and ongoing international adoption following CE Mark approval.
- Auryon Continues Taking Share Across Care SettingsManagement said Auryon is taking share from the other five players in both hospital and office-based laboratory settings. The company cited the platform's versatility, including its ability to treat in-stent restenosis above and below the knee, as an important value proposition for customers.
- Progress in Auryon BTK StudyEnrollment is advancing in the AMBITION BTK study, which management believes will support the long-term clinical case for Auryon below the knee.
- AlphaVac Growth AcceleratesCombined AngioVac and AlphaVac revenue increased 6.7% year over year to $12.0 million. AlphaVac revenue increased 37.4% year over year to $4.5 million and grew 6.4% sequentially. Management attributed momentum to continued hospital adoption, commercial organization changes, new accounts, physician adoption, and additional products getting into physicians' hands.
- Mechanical Thrombectomy Commercial Execution and Clinical ProgressManagement said the mechanical thrombectomy business is growing above market, with more doctors using the products, more hospitals completing value-analysis processes and stocking the products, and commercial team additions contributing after being trained. AlphaReturn IDE enrollment is progressing at a pace management described as encouraging, while the AngioVac right-sided infective endocarditis IDE study is also seeing strong enrollment.
- NanoKnife Revenue and Procedure Volumes IncreaseNanoKnife revenue increased 29% to $8.3 million. Probe sales increased 24.1% and capital sales increased 53.5%. The company reported record prostate procedure volumes during the quarter, with Q1 procedure volume higher than Q4 and consistent records being set each month.
- NanoKnife Adoption Expands Beyond Academic CentersManagement said NanoKnife prostate growth is being driven by urologists in regional and other hospital settings, rather than being concentrated only in university centers. The company is also seeing continued adoption by new physicians and increased utilization among physicians who have already adopted the technology.
- NanoKnife Reimbursement and Clinical MilestonesReimbursement progress remains a key driver, including the positive Palmetto MAC coverage decision received in the prior quarter and progress with additional regions toward consistent nationwide coverage. The company also received FDA approval for the RELIEF study evaluating NanoKnife for BPH, a market opportunity management estimates at approximately $1.9 billion. Management also cited two-year PRESERVE follow-up data showing zero additional incidents of recurrence.
- MedDevice Provides Stable Financial SupportMedDevice revenue increased 1.4% year over year to $41.0 million. Management described the business as a steady and reliable performer that generates consistent cash and profitability, allowing the company to continue investing in its MedTech platforms.
- Gross Margin Improves MateriallyFirst-quarter gross margin was 59.4%, up 410 basis points from the prior-year quarter. The improvement was driven primarily by favorable pricing and the ongoing revenue mix shift toward MedTech. Costa Rica cost savings have also begun entering the cost base over approximately the last six quarters.
- Operating and Adjusted Profitability ImproveTotal operating expenses were $55.3 million, or 68.4% of sales, compared with $52.5 million, or 69.4% of sales, a year ago. GAAP net loss improved to $7.1 million, or $0.17 per share, from a $10.9 million loss, or $0.26 per share. Adjusted net loss improved to $1.8 million, or $0.04 per share, from $4.2 million, or $0.10 per share. Adjusted EBITDA increased to $5.0 million from $2.2 million.
- Reduced Tariff Expense and Net Tariff BenefitTariff-related expenses were $900,000, compared with $1.7 million in the prior-year quarter. The company received $1.2 million of tariff refunds during the quarter, resulting in a net tariff benefit of approximately $400,000.
- Continued R&D InvestmentResearch and development expense increased to $8.0 million, or 9.9% of sales, from $6.4 million, or 8.5% of sales, a year ago. The company remains committed to investing in long-term MedTech growth and is targeting approximately 10% of sales for R&D going forward.
- Debt-Free Balance Sheet and Full-Year Cash Flow TargetThe company ended the quarter with $34 million in cash and maintained a debt-free balance sheet. Management expects to generate positive cash flow from operations for the full fiscal year.
- Fiscal 2027 Guidance MaintainedThe company continues to expect fiscal 2027 net sales of $336 million to $341 million, representing growth of 5% to 6.5% over fiscal 2026 revenue of $320.2 million. MedTech sales are expected to grow 12% to 15%, MedDevice sales are expected to be roughly flat, gross margin is expected to be 54% to 55%, adjusted EBITDA is expected to be $13 million to $16 million, and adjusted loss per share is expected to be $0.29 to $0.24.
- MedTech Platform Expansion OpportunitiesManagement identified additional platform opportunities, including taking AngioVac toward left-sided applications, taking Auryon into the coronary space, and evaluating NanoKnife for BPH through the RELIEF program. The company also expects continued product-line development and commercial organization changes to contribute to mechanical thrombectomy growth.
