Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Free Cash FlowSustained, material free cash flow ($335m, +41%) creates durable internal funding for dividends, buybacks and sustaining/growth CapEx. Over 2–6 months this strengthens balance sheet optionality, reduces reliance on external financing and cushions earnings volatility in cyclical freight markets.
Delivered Cost SavingsRealised $60m of recurring cost savings improves structural margins and unit economics. Persistent efficiency gains help offset inflationary pressures on fuel and maintenance, sustain EBITDA margins across segments and support stronger cash conversion and return on rollingstock and network assets.
Large Multi-year ContractA decade-scale BHP contract provides long-term revenue visibility and asset utilisation, locking in volumes from a major road-to-rail conversion. Multi-year contracted demand reduces short-term commodity exposure, supports recovery of deployed capital and underpins network/above-rail planning.
Bears Say
Rising LeverageHigher and increasing leverage with declining ROE constrains financial flexibility and increases interest-rate and cyclical risk. Over a medium horizon this limits capacity for opportunistic investment, larger growth projects or faster deleveraging without pressuring cash returns or capital structure.
Containerised Freight ProfitabilityThe containerised freight business remains structurally loss-making, driven by infrastructure disruptions and third-party outages. Continued inability to breakeven can create a sustained cash drag, require ongoing mitigation investment, and weaken the intended diversification away from bulk commodity exposure.
Safety Performance DeteriorationA deterioration in recordable injury rates points to operational and safety management gaps. Persistent safety issues raise the risk of regulatory scrutiny, higher remediation and insurance costs, service disruptions and reputational damage — all structural threats to reliable network operations and customer contracts.
