Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 20, 2026|% Change Since:-10.50%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall. Management reported record sales, adjusted EBITDA and net income, substantial increases in operating cash flow, strong metal prices, very low net cash costs after by-product credits, and continued progress across major growth projects. These strengths outweighed lower mine production, higher operating costs, project timing and CapEx uncertainties, illegal mining at Los Chancas, and the unfavorable TC/RC environment.

Company Guidance

Southern Copper expects 918,000 tons of copper, 29,000 tons of molybdenum, 24 million ounces of silver and 163,400 tons of zinc in 2026; next year’s copper production should be “about a little bit less than 920,000 tons,” with a “much more firmer forecast” in the January call. Fourth-quarter 2026 cash cost before by-product credits is expected to be “in line or slightly better than what we did last quarter,” while for 2027 cash cost should be “about to where we are now or a little bit better cash cost-wise.” Tia Maria is expected to produce 120,000 tons of SX-EW copper cathodes per annum in the early years of operations, with operations scheduled to begin in the first half of 2028; Los Chancas is expected to produce 130,000 tons of copper and 7,500 tons of molybdenum annually, with production by 2031; Michiquillay is expected to produce 225,000 tons of copper per year, with production expected by 2032; the Cuajone expansion is being evaluated from 90,000 tons per day to 120,000 tons per day, with a capital cost of $680 million and estimated annual production of 55,000 tons of copper and 1,400 tons of molybdenum, while 150,000 tons of milling capacity per day remains under study and “the most likely scenario is 120,000”; and El Pilar is expected to produce 36,000 tons of copper cathodes annually, with construction commencing in the first quarter of 2027 and production beginning in the second half of 2029.

  • Record Quarterly Financial PerformanceSouthern Copper reported record highs for net sales, adjusted EBITDA and net income for the second consecutive quarter. Third-quarter sales reached $4.7 billion, up $1.3 billion or 39% year over year, while adjusted EBITDA reached a record $3.0 billion, up 54%. The adjusted EBITDA margin increased to 65% from 59%.
  • Record Net Income and Strong MarginsThird-quarter net income reached a record $1.8 billion, up 63% from $1.1 billion in the third quarter of 2025. Net income margin increased to 38% from 33%. Nine-month net income was 67% higher than in 2025, with the nine-month margin rising to 38% from 32%.
  • Strong Operating Cash FlowCash flow from operating activities was $2.2 billion in the third quarter, up 43% year over year. Nine-month operating cash flow reached $5.9 billion, an 81% increase from $3.3 billion in the same period of 2025.
  • Higher Metal Prices Supported ResultsThe LME copper price increased 44% year over year to an average of $6.41 per pound, while the COMEX copper price increased 34% to $6.48 per pound. Molybdenum prices rose 36% to $32.93 per pound, silver prices increased 59% to $62.80 per ounce, and zinc prices increased 36% to $1.74 per pound.
  • Higher By-Product SalesMolybdenum sales increased 31% due to better prices, zinc sales increased 36% due to better prices and volume, and silver sales also increased because of higher prices, partly offset by lower volume.
  • Lower Net Cash Cost from By-Product CreditsOperating cash cost per pound of copper net of by-product credits fell 77% year over year to $0.09 in the third quarter, compared with $0.42 in the third quarter of 2025. Nine-month net cash cost declined 98% to $0.01 per pound from $0.61, driven by higher by-product credits.
  • Higher Smelting and Refining ProductionThird-quarter copper smelter production increased 18% and refinery production increased 16%. On a year-to-date basis, smelting production increased 16% and refining production increased 10%.
  • Mexican Operations Partially Offset Peruvian DeclinesAlthough Peru copper production fell 6% because of lower ore grades and recoveries at Toquepala and Cuajone, Mexican operations increased copper production by 2.5%, mainly due to higher output at Buenavista and IMMSA.
  • Copper Production Plan RaisedSouthern Copper expects to produce 918,000 tons of copper in 2026, which is 0.7% above its initial plan.
  • Higher Molybdenum Production PlanThe company expects to produce 29,000 tons of molybdenum in 2026, 12% above its initial plan. Lower production at La Caridad and Buenavista was largely offset by higher production at Toquepala and Cuajone.
  • Tia Maria Construction ProgressTia Maria is expected to produce 120,000 tons of SX-EW copper cathodes annually in its early years, with operations scheduled to begin in the first half of 2028. The project was 50% complete as of September 2026, with $884 million invested and $1.1 billion committed. Large-scale earthworks were completed, 18.9 million metric tons of material had been transferred, and major equipment orders and electrical infrastructure work were advancing.
  • Tia Maria Employment and Local ParticipationTia Maria had created 6,817 new jobs, including 1,181 filled by local applicants. The company expects approximately 7,000 jobs to be created during construction and intends, to the extent possible, to fill them with workers from Islay province. Separately, 17% of current Tia Maria jobs are held by local workers.
  • El Pilar Project AdvancedEl Pilar has obtained the necessary environmental permits. Early site preparation began in September 2026, basic engineering contracts were signed, and the EPCM bidding process for the SX-EW plant was underway. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027 and production in the second half of 2029. The project is expected to produce 36,000 tons of copper cathodes annually.
  • Cuajone Expansion Added to Project PipelineSouthern Copper is evaluating an expansion of Cuajone milling capacity from 90,000 to 120,000 tons per day, a 33% increase. The project is estimated to require $680 million of capital and could produce an average of 55,000 tons of copper and 1,400 tons of molybdenum annually. The company is also studying a potential 150,000-ton-per-day option, with 120,000 tons currently viewed as the more likely scenario.
  • Long-Term Growth PipelineThe company's capital investment program for the decade exceeds $21 billion across Peru and Mexico. Los Chancas is expected to produce 130,000 tons of copper and 7,500 tons of molybdenum annually, while Michiquillay is expected to produce 225,000 tons of copper annually with molybdenum, gold and silver by-products.
  • Improved Sustainability Ratings and Safety RecognitionS&P Global increased Southern Copper's 2026 Corporate Sustainability Assessment rating by 2 points, and the company ranked among the top three performers in the mining sector with a rating double the industry standard. Four Sonora operations received the Silver Helmet award from CAMIMEX for safety and accident-prevention performance.
  • Community and Workforce Development ProgramsThe Participative Environmental Committee for Michiquillay completed its third environmental-performance verification in 2026. The Forging Futures program has awarded 700 scholarships for heavy-equipment operation, welding and topography certifications over its 14-year history.

  • Favorable Water Position for Cuajone and Southern PeruManagement said it has identified good water sources for the Cuajone expansion and believes it has all water requirements for the 120,000-ton-per-day option. It also stated that water assessments for southern Peru showed a reasonable supply to address the drought expected from El Nino.
  • Positive View on Michiquillay and Permitting EffortsManagement said Michiquillay has social agreements with the two directly related communities and that work with those communities is progressing on the right path. The company also viewed government efforts to streamline or replace certain procedures as a step in the right direction for the industry.
