Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Cash GenerationPeabody is generating substantial operating and free cash flow despite negative TTM net income. This cash conversion supports debt management, reclamation obligations, investment in productive assets, and shareholder returns, providing resilience through the coal cycle.
Conservative Balance SheetVery low debt relative to equity gives Peabody meaningful financial flexibility while industry earnings are volatile. A conservative capital structure can reduce refinancing pressure, preserve liquidity for mine investment, and help the company withstand weaker coal pricing.
Centurion Growth AssetCenturion adds a long-life, low-cost metallurgical coal asset to Peabody's portfolio and is positioned to serve India's growing steel demand. Successful ramp-up could improve the company's production mix, scale, and earnings capacity over multiple quarters.
Bears Say
Profitability DeteriorationThe shift from double-digit profitability in 2022–2024 to losses in 2025 and TTM shows that Peabody's earnings power has weakened materially. Thin or negative margins reduce internal funding capacity and make results more sensitive to coal prices and operating costs.
High Coal-cycle ExposurePeabody's results remain structurally exposed to volatile coal markets because profitability depends on the spread between realized prices and mining, transport, processing, and logistics costs. This can produce uneven earnings and cash generation across the next several quarters.
Operational Execution And Cost PressureRecent cost pressure and lower volumes demonstrate execution sensitivity across Peabody's operations, particularly in metallurgical coal. Even with an expected second-half rebound, sustained production and cost control are necessary for Centurion and the wider portfolio to restore margins.

Company Description
Peabody Energy Comm
Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and founded in 1883, Peabody Energy Corporation operates as a prominent global entity in the coal mining sector. Its vast operations encompass the United States, Australia, Japan, India, China, and several other countries across Asia and beyond. The company organizes its extensive activities into key divisions: Seaborne Thermal Mining, Seaborne Metallurgical Mining, Powder River Basin Mining, and other U.S. Thermal Mining segments. Peabody's core business involves the extraction, processing, and sale of various types of coal. This includes thermal coal, primarily supplied to electricity generation facilities, as well as bituminous and sub-bituminous coal. Additionally, it mines a range of metallurgical coals, such as hard, semi-hard, and semi-soft coking coal, alongside pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, which it delivers to industrial clients and steel manufacturers. As of the end of 2021, the corporation maintained interests in 17 coal mining sites situated in both the U.S. and Australia, possessing approximately 2.5 billion tons of validated and likely coal reserves. It also managed around 450,000 acres of surface land through a combination of ownership and lease agreements. Beyond its mining endeavors, Peabody also facilitates direct and brokered trading of coal and related freight contracts, and furnishes transportation services.
PBE Earnings Call
Q2 2026

Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral
The call was mixed: operational and commercial strength across seaborne thermal and U.S. thermal delivered solid adjusted EBITDA, improved realized export prices, strong cash/liquidity and strategic progress (rare earth pilot, West Coast export proof-of-concept). Offsetting these positives, the Centurion longwall commissioning issues materially reduced metallurgical volumes and financial results (≈$80M impact and 1.0 million ton reduction in expected Centurion sales), caused higher met costs and produced a Q1 GAAP net loss. Rising diesel and freight costs add near-term margin risk, though management expects Centurion to reach full production rates in the back half of 2026 and believes the balance sheet provides flexibility to manage the disruption.View all DE:PBE earnings summariesPBE Revenue Breakdown
