Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive. Management reported strong earnings, digital customer and usage growth, solid capital, resilient credit performance, commercial lending momentum, and a stable Puerto Rico economy. The primary challenges were sequential declines in core revenue and loan production, higher funding costs, lower loan yields, deposit competition, seasonal increases in delinquencies and provision expense, and macroeconomic risks related to inflation, energy costs, interest rates, and borrowing costs. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
Management expects low single-digit loan growth for the year, with commercial more than offsetting an anticipated decline in auto; deposit growth, excluding government deposits, driven by Libre, Elite, and My Biz accounts; net interest margin to remain near 5.25% for the balance of the year, assuming one additional 25 basis points hike in December; provision to move into $18 million-$20 million range; non-interest expenses at about $385 million for the year, excluding the $5.8 million business operational charge in the second quarter; and an estimated tax rate for the year of 22.5%, not including discrete items. Management said it does not expect auto originations to decline additionally at a faster pace than 2026 and sees it pretty stable, expects not much of an impact on fourth quarter NIM from the December hike, and will deploy capital across organic growth, dividends, and share repurchases, with $180 million remaining in the buyback authorization.
- Strong Third-Quarter Earnings and ProfitabilityEarnings per share increased 15% year-over-year, supported by strong commercial loan growth, stable credit and core deposit balances, disciplined expense management, and strong profitability metrics. Third-quarter EPS was $1.33, the efficiency ratio was 52%, return on average assets was 1.86%, and return on average tangible common equity was 17%.
- Digital Banking Adoption Continued to AccelerateThird-quarter year-over-year growth included 5% in net new retail and commercial customers, 24% in active digital users, 2% in digital loan payments, and 11% in virtual teller use. More than 1.5 million customized AI-enabled Smart Banking Insights were delivered monthly year-to-date through September, with more than 90% positive feedback.
- Growth in Digital and Small-Business AccountsLibre accounts increased 7%, while digitally opened Libre accounts grew 18%. My Biz commercial accounts increased 6%, and accounts opened digitally or by phone grew 16%. Management stated that Libre, Elite, and My Biz are attracting new clients and helping bankers deepen existing relationships.
- Continued Investment in Digital, Technology, and AI-Powered BankingOFG continues investing in its Core Digital strategy, including tailored account products, an omni-channel platform, customer experience improvements, and AI-powered personalized financial insights. Management stated that these capabilities are accelerating digital adoption, expanding the client base, deepening relationships, and supporting core deposit growth.
- Share Repurchases ResumedOFG repurchased $13.5 million of common shares during the third quarter and has $180 million remaining under its authorization. Management said capital will continue to be deployed across organic growth, dividends, and share repurchases.
- Loan Balances and Commercial Lending MomentumAverage loan balances grew $37 million to $8.3 billion, while end-of-period balances increased $151 million, or 1.8%. Loans were up 4.1% year-over-year. Puerto Rico commercial and consumer loans more than offset declines in auto, residential mortgage, and U.S. commercial loans. Management described the Puerto Rico commercial business as having a banner year, with strong opportunities to establish new commercial relationships.
- Deposit Growth Excluding Government DepositsAverage core deposit balances grew $15 million to $9.7 billion. Excluding $500 million of government deposits that moved to wealth management in the first quarter, deposits were up 3.5% year-over-year. Management expects deposit growth excluding government deposits to be driven by Libre, Elite, and My Biz accounts.
- Strong Capital Position and Shareholder Returns CapacityCET1 was 14.10%, total stockholders' equity was $1.3 billion, the tangible common equity ratio was 10.34%, and tangible book value was $29.66. Management said capital remains strong despite an increase in the mark-to-market adjustment in the securities portfolio.
- Resilient Credit PerformanceNet charge-offs and non-performing loan rates were 0.70% and 0.74%, respectively, and both declined compared with the second quarter of 2026 and the third quarter of 2025. Early and total delinquency rates increased due to seasonal trends but declined year-over-year. The third-quarter provision was slightly lower than originally anticipated due to better auto and consumer credit metrics.
- Improving Commercial and Mortgage Asset QualityCommercial non-performing loan rates improved to 0.68% from 0.90% in the second quarter. Commercial delinquencies and non-performing levels declined, criticized exposures decreased, and overall commercial asset quality improved materially. Mortgage performance remained particularly strong, with continuing improvements across delinquency measures and recoveries exceeding charge-offs.
- Stable Puerto Rico Economic ConditionsManagement stated that Puerto Rico's economy remains stable and resilient, supported by a healthy labor market, unemployment on the 5% handle, historically high wages, healthy consumer and business liquidity, infrastructure projects, private investment, manufacturing expansion, and new onshoring initiatives. Management said it was not seeing indications of an economic slowdown.
- 2026 Loan Growth Outlook ReiteratedManagement reaffirmed its expectation for low single-digit loan growth for the year, with commercial growth more than offsetting an anticipated decline in auto. Management also said the strong commercial pipeline provides a chance to perform better than the low single-digit outlook.
- Net Interest Margin Expected to Remain Near 5.25%Management expects net interest margin to remain near 5.25% for the balance of the year, including one additional 25-basis-point rate hike in December. Management expects the December hike to have limited impact on fourth-quarter NIM.
- Expense Discipline MaintainedNon-interest expenses decreased $6.6 million to $96 million in the quarter, reflecting the absence of $5.8 million in business operational charges from the second quarter. Management remains on track to maintain non-interest expenses at about $385 million for the year, excluding the $5.8 million business operational charge.
- Better-Than-Expected Auto Originations and Stable OutlookManagement said auto originations were lower but better than expected during 2026. It expects auto originations to remain pretty stable in 2027 and does not expect them to decline additionally at a faster pace than in 2026.
