Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. OCC reported substantial growth in revenue, gross profit, margins and net income, along with rising backlog, strong demand across key markets, improved working capital and continued capacity expansion efforts. The company faces explicit supply-chain constraints, longer data center sales cycles, higher operating costs and uncertainty around seasonality, demand duration and future margins, but management said demand remains strong and that OCC is managing the challenges effectively.
Management said the second half of 2026 would be “very strong” and that they “continue to believe that, that’s going to be the case,” with a “robust backlog and forward load that are increasing” and sales increasing; sales order backlog and forward load stood at $13.5 million at the end of the third quarter, compared to $13.3 million as of April 30, 2026, $10.4 million as of January 31, 2026, and $7.3 million as of October 31, 2025, while “most of our sales order backlog and forward load is expected to be shipped within 2 to 3 quarters.” Management said the industry is seeing “high levels of demand,” there “does not appear to be any indication that demand is weakening” and there “doesn't appear to be an indication of demand weakening in the near term,” but it “can't specifically comment” on how long higher backlog or the increased demand cycle will continue, and “may not experience some typical seasonality” in the first quarter, which has “many holidays.” They reported “strong sales and demand in August,” but said it was “too early to comment on September,” would not provide guidance on margin progression throughout fiscal year 2027, and said they do not believe industry challenges will prevent “strong top line revenue growth during the remainder of fiscal year 2026”; working capital was $19.2 million versus $13.9 million at fiscal year-end 2025, and management believes working capital and the credit revolver are sufficient to support and sustain needs.
- Strong Third-Quarter Revenue GrowthConsolidated net sales increased 22% year over year to $24.3 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 from $19.9 million. Growth was largely driven by strong demand in OCC's enterprise, data center and specialty markets.
- Year-to-Date Sales ExpansionConsolidated net sales for the first nine months of fiscal 2026 increased 18.3% to $62.9 million from $53.2 million in the comparable period.
- Gross Profit and Margin ImprovementThird-quarter gross profit increased 43.9% to $9.1 million from $6.3 million, while gross profit margin increased to 37.4% from 31.7%. For the first nine months, gross profit increased 35.5% to $22.1 million and gross margin rose to 35% from 30.6%. Management attributed the improvement to higher volumes, manufacturing operating leverage and increased efficiencies, while noting that product mix also affects margins.
- Return to ProfitabilityThird-quarter net income increased to $1.9 million, or $0.21 per basic and diluted share, compared with $302,000, or $0.04 per share, in the prior-year quarter. First-nine-month net income was $2.5 million, or $0.28 per share, compared with a net loss of $1.5 million, or $0.19 per share, in the prior-year period.
- Backlog and Forward Load GrowthSales order backlog and forward load reached $13.5 million at the end of the third quarter, up from $13.3 million at April 30, 2026, $10.4 million at January 31, 2026, and $7.3 million at October 31, 2025. Most backlog and forward load is expected to ship within 2 to 3 quarters.
- Sustained Demand and Strong Second-Half OutlookManagement said third-quarter results support its previous expectation that the second half of fiscal 2026 would be very strong. The company continues to see high levels of industry demand, significant growth opportunities and no indication that demand is weakening in the near term, although it cannot predict how long the increased demand cycle will last.
- Broad Customer and Market GrowthManagement believes growth is being driven by both existing and new customers and end users. Enterprise, data center and specialty markets increased during the quarter and year to date, with specialty markets including the military sector.
- Improved Working Capital and LiquidityWorking capital was $19.2 million at the end of the third quarter, compared with $13.9 million at fiscal year-end 2025. Management believes working capital, the credit revolver and cash generated from operations are sufficient to support near-term working capital needs and sustain planned growth.
- SG&A Leverage ImprovementAlthough third-quarter SG&A increased to $7.0 million from $5.7 million, SG&A as a percentage of sales was essentially stable at 28.7% versus 28.8%. For the first nine months, SG&A as a percentage of sales improved to 29.9% from 31.8%, and management said future SG&A operating leverage may continue as sales grow.
- Capacity Expansion and Staffing InitiativesOCC is considering additional machinery, equipment and human resources to expand capacity. The company is increasing staffing at each facility, with the largest increases at its Roanoke fiber optic cable facility and its connectivity and termination facility near Dallas. Capacity expansion includes additional hires and equipment for certain products and facilities.
- Ability to Grow Despite Manufacturing ConstraintsManagement said OCC has generated increased sales despite impediments to ramping up manufacturing, primarily optical fiber shortages.
- Emerging Market and Partnership OpportunitiesOCC has fiber optic cable and connectivity opportunities in grid and energy verticals, is exploring potential opportunities related to Google's planned data center campus near its Roanoke facility, and has begun to see sales of certain Lightera products. Lightera is described as both a strategic collaboration partner and an important supplier.
- Strong August DemandManagement reported continued strong sales and demand in August, while stating that it was too early to comment on September.
