Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was generally optimistic. First-half revenue grew 36%, distributor sales increased sharply, profitability metrics remained strong, operating cash flow improved, and management highlighted positive momentum in robotics, automation, power conversion, and new products. However, the second quarter included an 8% revenue decline, a 95% decrease in defense product sales, lower net income and EPS, and higher operating expenses. Management characterized the main sales disruptions as temporary and expected second-half revenue to be consistent with the first half.
Management expects medical device and defense sales to recover in the current quarter, revenues in the second half of the fiscal year to be consistent with the first half, and the effective tax rate to be between 14% and 16% for at least the remainder of the fiscal year; Peter Eames said the company expects to return to growth in the next quarter, expects continued growth in power conversion, expects growth long term from wafer level chip scale products, and expects revenue to increasingly come from new customers. NVE said typical product ASP is perhaps $1 to $2 per sensor, with the potential for several NVE sensors per robot and “certainly in the tens of centers” per humanoid robot, while its capacity is well within producing millions of sensors and tens of millions of sensors and can easily scale well beyond that in the short term; the company also declared another $1.00 per share quarterly dividend to be paid at the end of November.
- Strong Distributor Sales GrowthDistributor sales increased 67% in the second quarter compared with the prior-year quarter, driven by strengthening industry conditions and strong demand for new and legacy commercial products. First-half distributor sales growth was described as being in the 40% range, and the company said distributor sales accelerated in the second quarter versus the first quarter.
- First-Half Revenue GrowthTotal revenue for the first six months of fiscal 2027 was $16.9 million, up 36% from the same period in fiscal 2026. The increase was attributed to strong sales across the product portfolio and increases in both direct and distributor sales.
- Strong Profitability MetricsSecond-quarter gross margin was 78%, operating margin was 55%, pretax margin was 63%, and net margin increased to 54%. Management stated that net margins increased to 54% due to a decrease in the effective tax rate.
- Lower Effective Tax RateThe effective tax rate decreased to 14% from 20% in the prior-year quarter, primarily due to favorable tax law changes. The company expects its effective tax rate to be between 14% and 16% for at least the remainder of the fiscal year.
- First-Half Net Income and EarningsNet income was $9.57 million, or $1.97 per diluted share, for the first two quarters of fiscal 2027.
- Strong Operating Cash Flow and LiquidityCash flow from operations was $11.1 million for the first six months of fiscal 2027, compared with $8 million in the first six months of fiscal 2026. Cash plus marketable securities increased from $43.5 million to $44.4 million as operating cash flow more than covered dividends and fixed-asset purchases.
- Working Capital Improvements and DividendReceivables decreased 12% due to the timing of customer payments, and inventories decreased 3% due to increased product sales in the first half of the fiscal year. The company paid its $1.00 per share quarterly dividend and declared another dividend to be paid at the end of November.
- New Wafer-Level Chip-Scale SensorNVE announced a new wafer-level chip-scale sensor providing analog information such as position from motion or changes in external magnetic fields. Measuring 0.55 mm square, it is the smallest product the company has ever made and combines small size with extremely high sensitivity for precision motion applications, including medical devices, industrial automation, and robotics.
- New Gear Sensor FamilyThe company released a family of seven gear sensors for precise motion, speed, and position sensing in industrial automation and robotics. The sensors match common gear sizes and provide large, low-distortion signals for more precise control in linear and rotational encoders and closed-loop servo systems.
- Product Development PipelineNVE is developing several additional products, including more precise sensors for robotics and more power-efficient isolators and power conversion products.
- Growth in Robotics and Power ConversionManagement reported strong growth in power conversion and robotics applications and said it remains optimistic about both markets. The company said it has a high level of inventory for robotics and power-conversion applications and expects continued growth in power conversion as data centers transition to 800-volt systems.
- Advantages in Higher-Voltage Power ConversionNVE said it provides the highest isolation in the industry and that increasing voltages in power supplies and power-conversion applications favor its products. Management said the trends favor NVE's technology and that it expects continued growth in this area.
- Positive Design-Win and Customer TrendsThe company has important small design wins for its wafer-level chip-scale products, with positive industry feedback. New customers commonly begin with samples and low-thousand-unit purchases before potentially moving to orders that can be factors of 10x larger. Management reported continual increases in interest and order sizes, particularly in robotics, automation, factory automation, and humanoid robotics.
- Humanoid Robotics OpportunityThe new gear sensors are intended for both industrial and humanoid robotics, including advanced encoders and servo systems. Management said it is already seeing strong interest and that the timing of the product introduction aligns with growth in the humanoid robotics industry.
- Potential Sensor Content in RoboticsNVE said a typical product average selling price is approximately $1 to $2 per sensor and that a humanoid robot could use several NVE sensors, which management described as being in the tens of sensors per robot.
- Inventory and Order-Flow ReadinessManagement said it typically has strong order flow and plenty of inventory to satisfy expected orders. It also reported that revenue increased toward the end of the September quarter, with September revenue higher than August.
- Leadership Transition and Board ExpansionPeter Eames was elected director and appointed president and CEO at the August annual shareholders meeting. Daniel Baker replaced Terry Glarner as chairman, and Carolyn Valentine was elected as a new director, expanding the board from five to seven directors. Management said the larger board strengthens governance.
- Continuation of Expansion StrategyThe new CEO said his focus is to take advantage of the recent expansion and leverage it toward new products and fast-growing markets, continuing the trajectory established under Daniel Baker's leadership.
- Medical-Device Expansion OpportunitiesNVE said it is working to expand its products throughout the medical-device industry. In addition to cardiac rhythm management, the company identified other implantable medical devices, including neurostimulators, as important growth areas because of its technology's small size and low power.
- Capacity Transition Toward ProductionSome of the resources from the expansion have shifted toward production capacity. Although the shift is currently relatively small, capacity added through the expansion is supporting important design wins in wafer-level chip-scale products, and the company plans to continue transitioning capacity as order flows increase.
- Competitive BarriersManagement identified NVE's patent portfolio, trade secrets, and internal expertise as barriers to entry. The company said it has excellent patent coverage in spintronics and that its unique technology provides customers with a benefit proposition unlike others.
- Future Facility FlexibilityThe company has not discussed further expansion beyond its current expanded space but said it will continue to expand as needed. Management may move administrative functions off-site and leverage infrastructure in the current building for additional production capacity.
