Q4 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q4 2026
Earnings Call Date:Sep 03, 2026|

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive, led by exceptional FY2026 financial results, substantial cash generation, a strengthened balance sheet, attractive shareholder distributions, improved operating performance, and favorable management views on market fundamentals. The main negatives were four fatalities, temporary production disruptions, higher unit costs, infrastructure reliability issues, some reserve reallocation, and reduced ruthenium usage at higher prices. These challenges were acknowledged alongside specific remediation plans and do not outweigh the financial and operational achievements.
Company Guidance
For FY 2027, group production is guided between 3.3 and 3.5, unit cost is guided between the lower end, 4% increase, and the top end being 8%, with the midpoint about 6%, and capital expenditure is expected to be between ZAR 9 billion and ZAR 11 billion; over the next five years, the company plans to spend about ZAR 60 billion, with SIB peaking at about ZAR 9 billion for the first two years, returning to between ZAR 7.5 billion and about ZAR 8 billion, while replacement and growth projects will be about between ZAR 10 billion and ZAR 13 billion, Zimplats should deliver 660,000 ounces of matte to South Africa for the next five years, Portal 10 is forecasted to start sinking around the fourth year from now, excess inventory release is expected to be north of 100,000, and the base dividend is set at 30% of adjusted free cash flow pre-growth with ZAR 10 billion retained on the balance sheet.
Strong FY2026 Operational and Reserve Performance
Management described FY2026 as an exceptional operational year. Ounce sales increased 4%, while mineral reserves increased 9%. Impala Canada’s mine life was extended by another year.
Favorable Pricing Environment
The South African rand basket price increased 63%, while the South African rand price increased 51%, materially supporting headline earnings and cash flow. Management said the current supportive price environment is expected to continue for the medium term.
Revenue and EBITDA Surge
Revenue increased 58% to ZAR 135.1 billion, driven by a 51% increase in revenue per ounce sold to ZAR 38,116 and a 4% increase in volumes to 3.51 million ounces. EBITDA rose from ZAR 9.9 billion to ZAR 43.6 billion, with the EBITDA margin expanding from 12% to 32%.
Higher Earnings and Impairment Reversal
Headline earnings were ZAR 22.9 billion, or ZAR 25.48 per share. Basic earnings were ZAR 31 billion, supported by an ZAR 8.1 billion after-tax reversal of previously recognized impairment losses at Impala Rustenburg.
Robust Free Cash Flow and Balance Sheet
Free cash flow increased to ZAR 22 billion, with second-half free cash flow of approximately ZAR 14 billion versus ZAR 7 billion in the first half. The company ended the period with ZAR 23 billion of cash, ZAR 22 billion of net cash, gross debt reduced from ZAR 1.8 billion to just under ZAR 500 million, and ZAR 37 billion of liquidity headroom.
Attractive Shareholder Returns
The company allocated 82% of free cash flow to shareholders. The final dividend was ZAR 14.45 per share, or ZAR 13.1 billion, and approximately 90% of second-half free cash flow was returned to shareholders. After the dividend, the company expected to retain ZAR 10 billion on the balance sheet.
Improved Rustenburg Production
Impala Rustenburg recorded a five-year high in the old lease area. Growth shafts 16 Shaft, 20 Shaft, and Styldrift collectively contributed 80,000 additional ounces, while Styldrift is expected to continue moving toward full nameplate capacity of 230,000 tonnes per month.
Zimplats Recovery and Processing Improvements
Zimplats recovered from the prior year and produced approximately 660,000 ounces in concentrate. Rustenburg furnaces ran without incident, base metal refineries achieved record milling, and increased BMR capacity enabled the release of 120,000 ounces from excess inventory.
Strong Market Position in Minor PGMs
Management highlighted increasing relevance of iridium and ruthenium, with the company producing close to 30% of primary refined iridium and around 28% of refined ruthenium. Management also cited increased industrial demand, hybrid-vehicle relevance, changing emissions legislation, constrained supply, and a limited greenfields project pipeline as supportive market factors.
Long-Term Investment and Life-of-Mine Optionality
The company plans to spend about ZAR 60 billion over the next five years to sustain production and increase base metal refinery processing capacity by about 20%. Life-of-Mine extension work includes 20 Shaft, 14 Shaft, Marula deepening, BRPM North, Mimosa, Two Rivers, Portal 10, and Waterberg. Management said the projects could maintain current production for another 10 years, with the greenfield projects providing another five years.
FY2027 Production and Cost Guidance
FY2027 group production guidance is 3.3 million to 3.5 million ounces. Unit cost guidance is a 4% to 8% increase, with a midpoint of about 6%, and capital expenditure guidance is ZAR 9 billion to ZAR 11 billion.
Continued ESG and Safety-System Investment
FY2026 marked six consecutive years of improvement in the lost-time injury frequency rate, while other safety rates and the number of 'white flag days' also improved. The company plans enhanced leadership visibility, control verification, and stronger employee empowerment to stop unsafe work, alongside accelerated ESG commitments for 2030.
Improved Zimplats Cash Access
A tripartite agreement enabled Zimplats to receive 50% of surrender proceeds in cash and use the other 50% for setoffs. Since the agreement, Zimplats offset approximately $99 million against taxes, royalties, and customs duties and accessed $150 million of local currency.
Progress on Future Projects
Two Rivers Merensky received early capital approval of just over ZAR 100 million, with final board approval expected around the second or third quarter of the following year. Waterberg is being evaluated through a phased approach, and Styldrift II is progressing through a concept study focused on potential early access.
