Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive, with record first-half operating and financial performance, a 29% increase in iodine production, sharply improved gross profit and EBITDA, positive cash generation, strong customer demand, and multiple plants advancing toward the pathway to 2,000 metric tons. The main challenges were rising chemical costs, regulatory delays at IO#12, a deferred delivery, limited specificity on IO#13 and IO#14 tonnage, and the continued prioritization of reinvestment over dividends. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
IO#12 is expected to be moving water through the facility in the next few weeks and ramp up in production shortly thereafter, with capacity for about 50,000 bpd of water and plant capital costs expected to come in right around $8.8 million; IO#11 is expected to increase from a 100 metric ton plant to somewhere between 145 and 160 metric tons of production; IO#13 and IO#14 are anticipated to come online in the first half of next year, with total volume likely to be higher than the average amounts of plants in Oklahoma, which are somewhere between 100 and 150 metric ton of plants on average; production capacity is expected to exceed 1,000 metric tons once IO#12 comes online, with a pathway to 2,000 metric tons; the company is on track to meet market expectations in fiscal year 2026, expects increases in iodine production all the time, and said profitability should increase at the same time as long as it can control costs and the iodine market continues to expand; it has sales in hand for all of the projected production planned to be sold into the open market throughout the rest of the year and expects to start selling iodine or taking purchase orders for iodine into 2027 shortly.
- Iodine Production Increased 29%First-half 2026 iodine production increased by 29% versus the first half of 2025, representing an additional 88 metric tons. IO#11 contributed 50 metric tons of the increase, while another plant contributed an additional 18 metric tons due to new wells and fresh drilling by an oil and gas partner.
- Revenue Increased to $31.3 MillionFirst-half 2026 revenue was $31.3 million versus $29.2 million in the first half of 2025, an increase of 7%. Management said the increase primarily reflected higher iodine volumes rather than pricing, as the average iodine price moved only from $74.27 to $74.69 per kilogram.
- Gross Profit and EBITDA Improved SignificantlyGross profit increased to $10.2 million from $6.3 million in the prior-year period. EBITDA doubled to $6.6 million from $3.3 million, supported by higher production and direct production costs that came in on budget or slightly better.
- Production Cost per Kilogram Fell 15%Total direct iodine production costs increased by 10%, while production volume increased by 29%, resulting in a 15% reduction in average production cost per kilogram. Management attributed this partly to lower chemical costs from supplier negotiations and favorable operating conditions.
- Positive Cash Generation and Net Cash PositionThe company generated $7.8 million from operations in the first half, spent $5.8 million on capital expenditure, and ended the period with $12.9 million of cash versus $6.4 million in the prior-year period. Net cash was $7.2 million at June 30, 2026, compared with a negative net debt position of $0.8 million in the prior year, and management said cash remained approximately $12 million in the last week or two.
- IO#12 Nearing Completion Within BudgetThe Permian Basin IO#12 plant is expected to begin moving water through the facility in the next few weeks and ramp up production shortly thereafter. It is designed to process approximately 50,000 barrels of water per day, compared with approximately 25,000 barrels per day for most Oklahoma plants. Capital costs are expected to be approximately $8.8 million, within the original $8 million to $9 million estimate.
- IO#11 Capacity ExpansionA new brine-supply agreement and pipeline project are expected to increase IO#11 production by approximately 50%. The plant, previously expected to produce about 100 metric tons, is now expected to produce between 145 and 160 metric tons.
- IO#13 and IO#14 Agreements AnnouncedThe company signed agreements to build IO#13 and IO#14 in Central Oklahoma. Management expects the combined production from the two plants to be higher than the average Oklahoma plant and is ambitious about bringing them online in the first half of next year.
- Progress Toward the Pathway to 2,000 Metric TonsManagement said production has grown from approximately 500 metric tons to an expected run rate of about 1,000 metric tons once IO#12 is online. IO#13, IO#14, and a pipeline of additional sites with multiple brine suppliers are intended to support the company's pathway to 2,000 metric tons of iodine production.
- Strong Iodine Market FundamentalsManagement expects the iodine market to reach approximately 40,000 metric tons of annual production in 2026. The market has grown by about 3% on average in recent years, implying approximately 1,200 metric tons of additional capacity is needed to meet demand. Iodine pricing has generally remained above $70 per kilogram over the last four years, and management believes supply and demand are currently fairly well in equilibrium.
- Growing Applications and Asian DemandManagement highlighted especially strong demand growth in Asia and ongoing growth in X-ray contrast media, supported by aging populations and broader access to modern medicine. Other iodine applications include pharmaceuticals, nutrition, biocides, animal-health additives, automotive heat stabilizers, solar cells, refrigerant gases, and potentially semiconductors.
- Strong Customer Demand and Sales CoverageManagement said the company has sales in hand for all projected crystalline iodine production intended for the open market for the rest of 2026. The customer base was described as solid, with long-term customers seeking to grow alongside Iofina, and the company expects to begin taking purchase orders for 2027 shortly.
- Derivative Products Continued to ExpandThe new feed additive, a micronutrient focused specifically on cattle and other applications, was Iofina Chemical's largest revenue derivative in the first half of 2026. Non-iodine derivatives represented approximately 10% of sales and were focused on specialty gases and other applications.
- Additional Funding Available for ExpansionThe company has a $10 million bank facility intended to support IO#13 and IO#14, with a drawdown period through the end of next year and repayment over seven years after the drawdown period. It also has a $6 million revolving line of credit that has never been used.
- Tax Benefits Supported Cash FlowDeferred tax was $5 million, reflecting tax savings from claiming capital expenditure against taxable profit. Management said the U.S. OBBBA legislation enabled a significantly greater ability to write off capital expenditure, subject to certain limits, which assisted cash flow.
- Execution Track Record and Due DiligenceWith IO#12, Iofina expects to have built its fourth plant in four years. Management also stated that none of the plants built over the last 10 years has experienced a shutdown and emphasized its due diligence in locating plants where brine resources are concentrated.
- Fiscal 2026 Expectations ReaffirmedManagement said the company is on track to meet market expectations for fiscal year 2026 and expects increasing production, record results, and higher profitability provided costs remain controlled and the iodine market continues to expand.
