Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Profitability ImprovementThe sharp improvement in gross and net margins, together with the strong 2025 earnings rebound, indicates enhanced profit conversion from operations. If maintained, this higher profitability can support reinvestment, strengthen resilience against cost pressures, and provide a more durable earnings base.
Lower Financial LeverageThe substantial reduction in debt-to-equity lowers balance-sheet risk and improves financial flexibility compared with 2023. A sizable equity base provides support for the utility portfolio, while reduced leverage should make the company better positioned to manage obligations and fund operations.
Recent Cash GenerationPositive operating and free cash flow over the latest three years shows that reported profits have generally been converted into cash. The close relationship between free cash flow and net income supports funding capacity for operations and capital needs, despite some year-to-year variation.
Bears Say
Substantial Remaining DebtAlthough leverage has improved, the remaining debt balance is material relative to the business and continues to create financial obligations. Moderate rather than exceptional returns on equity also suggest that the company is not converting its capital base into profits at a highly efficient rate.
Uneven Cash-flow HistoryThe history of negative operating and free cash flow shows that cash generation has not been consistently dependable across cycles. The 2025 free-cash-flow decline reinforces sensitivity to working-capital movements or investment timing, which could constrain internally funded spending in weaker periods.
Top-line VolatilityRevenue has not followed a consistently rising path, with declines in 2022 and 2024 before the 2025 recovery. This uneven top-line pattern makes sustained earnings growth less predictable and may complicate planning for investment, operating costs, and shareholder returns.
