Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2027
Earnings Call Date:Sep 03, 2026|% Change Since:17.99%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was broadly optimistic. Management reported meaningful earnings improvement, gross-margin expansion, strong momentum at Journeys and Johnston & Murphy, progress at Schuh, structural cost savings, and a full-year EPS outlook at the high end of the prior range. These positives outweighed the declining quarterly sales, weaker Schuh performance, challenging consumer environment, expected second-half sales pressure, and temporary third-quarter operating-income decline.

Company Guidance

Genesco now expects fiscal 27 adjusted diluted earnings per share to be at the high end up from the middle, of its previously increased range of $2 to $2.40; full year comparable sales are expected to be flat versus the prior expectation of up 1% to 2%, total sales down approximately 2% versus the prior expectation of down 1% to flat, gross margin expansion of 60 to 80 basis points versus 50 to 60 basis points, SG&A as a percentage of sales to deleverage approximately 30 basis points versus flat to 20 basis points of deleverage, adjusted operating income within the prior range of $34 million to $40 million with the higher end of the range up from the middle now the most likely outcome, an adjusted effective tax rate of approximately 30%, and a weighted average diluted share count of approximately 10.8 million shares; fiscal 27 is expected to realize up to $20 million of savings, with the remaining $20 million to $30 million expected over the following 2 years. For the third quarter, the company expects roughly flat comparable sales, total sales down a little over 4% to 4.5%, $14 million of loss from license exits, gross margin expansion of 90 to 100 basis points, SG&A deleverage that will more than offset the gross margin expansion, 100 basis points of pressure from increased marketing and investment, a tax rate of approximately 7% to 8%, operating income to be moderately below last year, and EPS to be $0.05 to $0.15 higher.

  • Quarterly Earnings Significantly ImprovedSecond-quarter bottom-line results were significantly better than last year and well ahead of expectations, with every business achieving gains versus plan. Adjusted operating loss improved by $6 million to $8 million versus a $14 million loss last year, and adjusted diluted loss per share improved to $0.83 from $1.14.
  • Gross Margin Expansion and Expense DisciplineAdjusted gross margin increased 140 basis points to 47.2%, driven by reduced promotional activity and higher full-price selling at Schuh, favorable sales mix, license-exit benefits, and pricing and tariff-mitigation actions in the branded businesses. Adjusted operating expenses decreased approximately $6 million year over year.
  • Journeys Delivered Eighth Consecutive Positive CompJourneys posted its eighth consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales, with both store and e-commerce comps positive. Journeys comparable sales increased 2% for the quarter.
  • Journeys Product Momentum and Full-Price SellingJourneys benefited from broad-based product strength across athletic, casual, lifestyle running, sandals, low-profile athletic fashion, Mary Janes, and sneaker ballerinas. The company reported higher transaction size, more full-price selling, better conversion, and growth from more than eight brands.
  • Journeys 4.0 Format ExpansionThe Journeys 4.0 format continued to deliver sales lifts in excess of 25%. The company opened 25 locations in the quarter, had opened 130 stores in the format through the second quarter, and increased its full-year target to 95 stores, bringing the expected total to approximately 180 stores, or 20% of the total fleet, by year end.
  • Journeys Expense Leverage and Store ProductivityJourneys delivered 180 basis points of expense leverage in the quarter. Management attributed the improvement to 4.0 store productivity, fleet optimization, cost-reduction actions, and selling-salary efficiencies.
  • Journeys Back-to-School AccelerationJourneys accelerated to a mid-single-digit comparable-sales increase in August, despite facing its second-most challenging monthly two-year stack, which was well into the double digits. Back-to-school trends were supported by the Life on Loud campaign and tax-free periods.
  • Journeys Brand-Building Campaign TractionJourneys increased media spend by more than 30%. The Life on Loud back-to-school campaign generated more than 260 million media impressions in the first four weeks of an eight-week flight, while TikTok and Instagram engagement increased 30%. Management also reported traffic increases to stores and journeys.com since the campaign launched on July 14.
  • Journeys Store Consolidation PerformanceA larger-format San Antonio location consolidating separate Journeys and Journeys Kid stores delivered sales up more than 70% month-to-date and was well ahead of target. The company also opened its first 4.0 Journeys Kids store in Mesquite, Texas, with plans for seven more during the year.
  • Johnston & Murphy Continued Positive MomentumJohnston & Murphy delivered its third consecutive quarter of positive comparable-sales gains, with comparable sales increasing 4%. Growth was supported by newness, improved assortments, pricing strategies, increased brand marketing, better conversion, higher transaction size, and traffic that considerably outperformed the industry.
  • Johnston & Murphy Profit and Customer GrowthJohnston & Murphy's profit increased as both sales and gross margin improved. Revenue from new customers grew at a double-digit rate and increased for 10 consecutive months since the launch of the first Peyton Manning campaign. Apparel grew double digits, while footwear growth was led by casual and casual athletic styles.
  • Peyton Manning Partnership ExtendedGenesco extended its Johnston & Murphy partnership with Peyton Manning for two additional years. Management stated that Peyton had more than 85% recognition across the target customer base, and the new campaign launched on September 1, one month earlier than last year.
  • Schuh Gross Margin and Operating Income ProgressSchuh's gross margin improved 300 basis points year over year as full-price mix increased by 10 full percentage points of overall sales. Gross-margin improvement and cost-structure initiatives drove nearly flat operating income despite lower sales.
  • Schuh Product Access and LeadershipSchuh reported greater access to and allocation of adidas, Nike, ASICS, UGG, New Balance, Birkenstock, and other brands as part of its elevated-assortment strategy. Tomas Petersson was appointed president of Schuh following Colin Temple's retirement.
  • Structural Cost-Savings ProgramGenesco expects to realize up to $20 million of structural savings in fiscal 2027 from selling-salary productivity, operational efficiencies, procurement initiatives, and AI and automation opportunities. The remaining $20 million to $30 million is expected over the following two years.
  • Tariff Refunds ReceivedThe company received approximately $22 million of tariff refunds during the quarter. These refunds were excluded from adjusted results and relate to branded businesses that import product, representing roughly 20% of the company.
  • Share Repurchases and LiquidityGenesco repurchased approximately 318,000 shares, or about 3% of outstanding shares, for $11 million through August 31, leaving $19 million under its authorization. Management stated that the balance sheet remained healthy, liquidity remained strong, and solid cash-flow generation was expected in the second half.
  • Raised Full-Year Earnings OutlookFiscal 2027 adjusted diluted EPS is now expected at the high end of the previously increased $2.00 to $2.40 range, up from the middle of the range previously expected. Full-year gross-margin expansion guidance increased to 60 to 80 basis points from 50 to 60 basis points, while adjusted operating income remains within the $34 million to $40 million range.
