Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Diversified Operating PortfolioFirst Pacific’s exposure across consumer food (Indofood), telecom (PLDT/Maya) and infrastructure (MPIC) creates multiple cash engines. Large, independent operating subsidiaries delivering record revenues reduce single‑market dependence and support durable upstream dividend potential and stability of holding‑company cash flows.
Sustained Profit ImprovementRecurring and net profits have trended higher, with recurring profit more than doubling since 2018. This multi‑year earnings improvement indicates operating leverage and margin resilience at core assets, providing a stronger earnings base to fund dividends, capex and deleveraging over the medium term.
Improving Cash GenerationA material rebound in operating cash flow and free cash flow in 2025 increases the company’s ability to fund distributions and co‑fund strategic projects without immediate reliance on capital markets. Consistent positive cash generation supports a sustainable dividend policy and preserves optionality for selective investment or debt reduction.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageThe holding’s elevated leverage and historically high debt‑to‑equity ratio constrain financial flexibility. Higher absolute debt amplifies sensitivity to profit or cash setbacks, limits manoeuvring room for opportunistic M&A or buybacks, and increases refinancing exposure if operating cash flow weakens or interest rates rise.
Volatile Cash ConversionIntermittent FCF conversion and working‑capital swings reduce predictability of upstream dividends and debt paydown. Low FCF-to-net‑income in 2024 signals that reported profits may not consistently translate to distributable cash, leaving the holding exposed to timing mismatches and investment‑driven cash demands.
Energy Exposure And Refinancing RiskMaterial exposure to power generation (PLP) and commodity/fuel supply risks creates structural earnings volatility for the group. Combined with a ~$350m bond maturing in 2027, these operational and market risks elevate refinancing and earnings downside risk, potentially limiting capital allocation flexibility during stress periods.
