Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 30, 2026|% Change Since:1.40%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was strongly positive overall. Erste Group reported records across revenue, operating profit, net profit, fee income, returns and cost efficiency, while upgrading several 2026 targets and confirming net profit above EUR 4 billion and return on tangible equity above 20%. Credit quality remained stable and funding execution was strong. The main negatives were lower trading and fair-value income, flat quarterly deposits, currency-related effects in Hungary and Poland, higher risk-weighted assets and temporary capital pressure, Polish campaign and integration costs, expected Czech pension-fee pressure, and continued geopolitical and competitive uncertainty. The positive developments significantly outweighed the challenges.

Company Guidance

For 2026, Erste expects organic loan growth excluding Erste Bank Polska toward the upper end of the 6%-8% target range, resulting in year-end net loan stock north of EUR 290 billion; net interest income excluding Erste Bank Polska should grow above 6% and the enlarged group should surpass its EUR 11 billion target by a comfortable margin, fees ex-Polska should grow by about 10% while group fees remain guided at about EUR 4 billion, the cost-income ratio excluding Erste Bank Polska should be below 46% and lower than 45% including Polska, costs remain guided at about EUR 7 billion with roughly a 3% cost uplift for Erste ex Polska, risk costs including Erste Bank Polska should be at the lower end of the 25 basis points-30 basis points target range, group NPL coverage is projected somewhere around 70%, return on tangible equity should be above 20%, earnings per share uplift higher than 20%, and reported net profit above EUR 4 billion; CET1 is expected to be somewhat higher at year-end than the third quarter pro forma level of 15%, while the management target of 14.25% remains unchanged, and detailed 2027 guidance will be provided with fourth quarter results at the end of February.

  • Record Quarterly Revenue, Operating Profit and Net ProfitThe third quarter delivered record revenues of almost EUR 4.1 billion, record operating profit above EUR 2.3 billion, and record net profit of more than EUR 1.1 billion. Earnings per share reached EUR 2.74, return on tangible equity was 23.8%, and ordinary return on equity was 18.2%.
  • Strong Net Interest Income GrowthNet interest income increased 5.9% quarter-on-quarter, driven by continued volume growth, higher short- and long-term interest rates, higher reinvestment yields and volumes, and only marginally higher funding costs for the retail deposit base. Net interest margin increased to 273 basis points.
  • Record Fee PerformanceQuarterly fee income reached a new record. Excluding Erste Bank Polska, net fee income increased 10.7% year-on-year in the first nine months, supported by strong securities-business demand and payment-service fees. The 2026 fee-growth outlook for Erste ex Polska was raised to about 10% from 7%-9%.
  • Improved Cost Efficiency and Operating LeverageQuarter-on-quarter costs declined, while year-on-year cost inflation excluding Erste Bank Polska was only 2.4%. The third-quarter cost-income ratio reached an all-time low of 43.1%. The 2026 cost-income-ratio guidance for Erste ex Polska was upgraded to below 46%, while the group guidance including Polska remains below 45%.
  • 2026 Financial Guidance UpgradedThe company expects net interest income excluding Erste Bank Polska to grow by more than 6% and to exceed the enlarged-group EUR 11 billion target by a comfortable margin. Fees ex Polska are expected to grow by about 10%, and risk costs including Polska are expected at the lower end of the 25 basis points-30 basis points range.
  • Loan Growth Ahead of PlanNet loan stock increased by EUR 4.7 billion during the quarter, with organic year-to-date loan growth of more than EUR 15 billion. Excluding Erste Bank Polska, customer loans grew 5.8% year-to-date and 7.7% year-on-year. The group confirmed its 6%-8% 2026 organic loan-growth target, likely toward the upper half of the range, and raised year-end net loan-stock guidance to above EUR 290 billion from previously about EUR 290 billion.
  • Broad-Based Retail and Corporate DemandHousing-loan demand continued across geographic segments, particularly in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia and the Austrian savings banks. Corporate loans excluding Erste Bank Polska grew 7.3% year-on-year and 1.6% quarter-on-quarter, with strong SME and large-corporate demand, especially for investment loans. Machinery, energy-transition investments, non-cyclical consumer products, healthcare and services were cited as contributors to corporate portfolio growth.
  • Deposit Franchise Expanded in Real MoneyCustomer deposits grew 4.5% year-to-date and 6.6% year-on-year excluding Erste Bank Polska, representing more than EUR 16 billion of year-on-year growth. Corporate deposits grew 15.5% year-on-year and 3.1% quarter-on-quarter, while funding costs increased only marginally despite noticeably higher interest rates.
  • Digital and Retail Franchise MomentumCustomers had opened more than 2.3 million digital security savings plans, with monthly contributions of between EUR 50 and EUR 200. George had onboarded more than 12 million clients, and the overall digital sales share surpassed 80%, including digitally assisted sales.
  • Strong Market Business and Asset Management FlowsThe ECM and DCM teams executed 256 transactions year-to-date with a core-arranged issuance volume of EUR 189 billion. Asset-management net sales excluding Polska reached EUR 3.9 billion year-to-date, and assets under management including the Polish operation surpassed EUR 120 billion for the first time.
  • Credit Costs and Asset Quality Remained FavorableRisk costs were 24 basis points on a clean basis and remained broadly unchanged from the first two quarters. The NPL ratio improved to 2.3%, the NPL coverage ratio excluding collateral was 68.8%, NPL inflows continued to decline, and the company expects the 2026 group NPL ratio to remain around current levels with coverage around 70%.
  • Confirmed Strong Bottom-Line OutlookThe company confirmed its guidance for return on tangible equity above 20%, earnings-per-share growth above 20%, and reported 2026 net profit above EUR 4 billion.
  • Successful Funding ExecutionThe group completed its 2026 funding plan early. It issued its first EUR 1.5 billion dual-tranche senior-preferred transaction, while Česká spořitelna completed a EUR 500 million covered-bond benchmark and Erste Bank Hungary issued EUR 500 million of senior-preferred debt.
  • Capital and SRT CapacityThe group reported an overall SRT impact of 73 basis points on the CET1 ratio in the third quarter and expects this to reach slightly above 80 basis points by year-end. Management expects a significant fourth-quarter SRT transaction and stated that it sees no capital headwinds, with potential capacity for either increasing its Erste Bank Polska stake or making distributions.
  • Positive Erste Bank Polska PositionManagement said the 49% Erste Bank Polska investment is performing as expected, with strong profitability, a positive outlook for Polish economic growth, good governance and IT integration progressing on track. The tender offer was scheduled to launch after receiving the required regulatory approvals.
  • Favorable Regional Operating EnvironmentDespite geopolitical uncertainty, higher energy prices and higher interest rates across many markets, management said regional growth and key macroeconomic indicators remained broadly unchanged and described the combination of solid economic growth and upward-sloping yield curves as favorable for sustainable volume growth and profitable margins.
