Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly constructive. Management highlighted the transformation into an integrated gas company, Twin Eagle integration, substantial commercial earnings opportunities, strong hedging and balance-sheet metrics, operational improvements, and expected structural demand growth. The principal challenges were near-term oversupply and price pressure, reduced drilling activity, inflationary costs, required deleveraging, and the high cost and uncertain timing of West Haynesville development. Overall, the breadth and significance of the stated operational and commercial positives outweighed the identified challenges.
Expand guided to $80 million of EBITDA in Q4 for its combined Marketing and Commercial business, translating to about 12¢/Mcf, with a good line of sight to $500 million by 2028, or about $0.20/Mcf, and ultimately $750 million of additional EBITDA, or about 30¢/Mcf on current production; this would reduce cash breakeven to $2.50 to $2.60, with $2.60 at the intermediate stop in 2028 and $2.50 at the $750 million run rate. Q4 production is guided to 7.4 Bcf to 7.6 Bcf a day, while 2027 activity will remain flexible, including approximately 13 Bcf a day of new incremental demand by year end 2028; 2027 inflation could be a low to mid single digit inflationary factor, diesel usage is expected to decline about 50%, and Western Haynesville is expected to require >$4 gas to compete, with probably 2 wells drilled there in 2027. The company is 55% hedged for all of 2027 at a $3.65 kind of price on average, expects about a 2% to 3% improvement in well productivity year over year, and expects Haynesville to grow by somewhere around 5 Bcf a day over the next 4 to 6 years or so.
- Transformation into an Integrated Gas CompanyOver the past 9 months, Expand transformed from an upstream gas producer into an integrated gas company with upstream, marketing, and LNG capabilities across North America.
- Twin Eagle Acquisition and Integration ProgressThe Twin Eagle acquisition closed on September 16, and the teams are working side by side in one office. Management said the organizations have been aligned, back-office integration is underway, and early customer feedback supports the expected synergies.
- Marketing and Commercial Earnings Growth TargetsCombined Expand and Twin Eagle marketing profits are expected to add 12¢/Mcfe to fourth-quarter margin, equivalent to approximately $80 million in a low-volatility environment. Management has a line of sight to $500 million of marketing and commercial earnings by 2028, or about $0.20/Mcfe, and ultimately $750 million of additional EBITDA, or approximately 30¢/Mcfe on current production.
- Broad Customer and Demand ExposureThe company is pursuing LNG, data center, power, and commercial and industrial customers across North America. Twin Eagle provides relationships with over 1 thousand customers and access to transportation, supply, and demand across the continent.
- Strong Third-Quarter ProductionExpand produced approximately 7.5 Bcfe per day in the third quarter.
- Production Flexibility and Demand PositioningManagement expects approximately 13 Bcf a day of new incremental demand by year-end 2028 and plans to maintain flexibility in production. The company moved from around 12 rigs to 10, pushed out about 9 turn-in-lines from the third quarter, and plans to align production with the most constructive price environment.
- Organic Leasing Added High-Quality InventoryExpand expects to spend about $250 million on organic lease acquisitions in 2026. In Pennsylvania's Bradford County, it acquired roughly 3 thousand acres for around $15 million, placed a rig on the lease within a couple months, and expects the wells to deliver about 1 million cubic feet per foot of lateral productivity.
- Share Repurchases and Capital ReturnsExpand allocated more to share repurchases in 2026 than any of its peers, including $35 million in the third quarter. Capital allocation priorities are D&C capital, the dividend, the balance sheet, and then growth opportunities including potential share buybacks.
- Hedging Program Protected Realized PricesThe hedging program improved realized prices by $0.46 per Mcfe. It generated more than $300 million of benefit relative to strip prices in the third quarter, and Expand was 55% hedged for all of 2027 at an average price of $3.65.
- Strong Balance Sheet and ResilienceExpand reported net debt of $4.7 billion and leverage of 0.8x. Management described the company as having an investment-grade balance sheet, low breakevens, operational flexibility, and a disciplined hedging strategy.
- Permanent CEO Appointed on ScheduleThe company fulfilled its commitment to name a permanent CEO within 9 months, appointing Dan Brown. Management highlighted his experience as a public-company CEO, upstream operator, team builder, and capital allocator.
- LNG Portfolio ExpansionExpand signed the Delfin agreement for 1.15 million tonnes of LNG offtake starting in 2031 through the end of 2032. Management expects to add more to its LNG portfolio to gain access to international markets and diversify away from Henry Hub.
- Operational Efficiency ImprovementsSouthwest Appalachia drilling performance improved 20% from 2025 to 2026 in footage per day, while cost per foot improved about 10%. The company also expects 2% to 3% year-over-year improvement in well productivity, supported in part by its own sand supply, which costs about one-third of a commercial ton of sand.
- Continued Investment in TechnologyExpand continues to identify opportunities to use artificial intelligence within the business and expects it to unlock additional value in future years.
- Coast-to-Coast Platform Supports GrowthManagement said Twin Eagle's coast-to-coast capabilities allow Expand to connect supply and demand for data centers and other customers throughout the United States, including markets outside its core upstream basins.
- Disciplined Approach to Further M&AExpand remains open to inorganic opportunities across the portfolio but said any transaction must improve the company, deliver strong risk-adjusted full-cycle value, and include synergies that management is very confident it can capture.
