Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. The company reported double-digit revenue and adjusted gross profit growth, sustained market-share gains, higher truckload profitability, substantial productivity improvements, margin expansion in both operating segments, and confidence in its full-year operating income target. Management also expressed strong conviction in the RXO acquisition and the remaining Lean AI opportunity. The main challenges were higher SG&A and claims expenses, elevated working capital, expected leverage increases and paused buybacks after the RXO closing, pending insurance costs, seasonal Q4 volume softness, and a freight market that remains uneven and tepid in several end markets.
Management expects organic outgrowth to continue, Q4 incentive compensation to be lower than in Q3, Q4 SG&A expenses to come down versus Q3 levels, and the Cass Freight shipment index to reflect a 3.4% sequential volume decline in Q4; truckload spot rates are expected to inflect higher during Q4. Personnel expenses are expected to be in the range of $1.36 billion to $1.37 billion, total SG&A expenses in the range of $585 million to $590 million, depreciation and amortization expense toward the lower end of the previously stated range of $95 million to $105 million for the year, the effective tax rate at 18% to 20% for the full year, and capital expenditures in the range of $65 million to $75 million. Management remains confident in delivering full year operating income within its target range, whose bottom end remains equivalent to at least $6 of diluted EPS, but is not guiding towards any part of the target range; it expects to return to its target leverage range by the end of 28, expects the insurance renewal process to be finalized by the end of December, and expects updated 2027 insurance-cost information sometime in mid to late December.
- Strong Third-Quarter Revenue and Adjusted Gross Profit GrowthQ3 total revenues grew 29.5% year over year and adjusted gross profit grew 14.5%, driven by NAST's outperformance versus the Cass index, higher pricing in NAST and Global Forwarding, and continued truckload gross profit optimization.
- NAST Volume Outperformed the MarketTotal NAST volume grew 3.5% year over year compared with a 0.3% decline in the Cass freight shipment index. Both truckload and LTL volume increased 3.5%. This marked the 14th consecutive quarter of NAST volume growth outpacing the market.
- Continued LTL Market Share GainsThe company delivered year-over-year LTL volume growth for the 11th consecutive quarter. CH Robinson stated that it moves more LTL freight than any other third-party logistics provider in North America.
- Higher Truckload Profit per ShipmentTruckload AGP per shipment increased 17% year over year in Q3. The improvement reflected higher-margin transactional volume, repricing of the contractual portfolio, stronger price and cost discovery, and increased spot-market opportunities.
- NAST and Global Forwarding Margin ExpansionNAST delivered a 40.3% operating margin excluding restructuring costs, up 110 basis points year over year. Global Forwarding delivered a 36.6% operating margin, up 660 basis points year over year. Both businesses again achieved their stated mid-cycle operating margin targets.
- Significant Productivity ImprovementsNAST shipments per person per day increased by more than 15% year over year in Q3 and by more than 65% since the end of 2022. The company also reported productivity gains of more than 65% in both NAST and Global Forwarding since the end of 2022.
- Headcount Decoupled from Volume GrowthAverage headcount declined 10.4% year over year in Q3 and 2% sequentially while the company continued to grow volume. Management said this demonstrated continued progress in decoupling headcount growth from volume growth.
- Lean AI Deployment Continues to ScaleThe company has more than 450 in-house engineers and data scientists and continues to integrate custom-built AI agents into quote-to-cash workflows. Token usage increased more than 40 times versus two years ago, while annual token costs remained below $2 million on a run-rate basis.
- Substantial Remaining Automation OpportunityManagement stated that only a fraction of the hundreds of quote-to-cash processes have been automated, leaving substantial runway across NAST and Global Forwarding. The company is also deploying its NAST agentic AI, machine-learning, price-discovery, and cost-discovery capabilities into Global Forwarding.
- Global Forwarding Growth and Transformation OpportunityManagement cited opportunities in Global Forwarding for revenue growth, revenue management, improved purchased-transportation pricing and costing, and productivity. Technology and data-center-related activity were identified as focused growth areas, while ocean quoting is already receiving faster responses with less manual work.
- RXO Acquisition Expected to Add Growth and SynergiesManagement remains highly confident in the planned acquisition of RXO and expects it to accelerate growth and profitability. The company continues to target $300 million of net synergies and stated that the top-100 customer overlap analysis showed limited overlap.
- RXO Integration Preparation and Complementary CapabilitiesCH Robinson has assembled an experienced integration team with detailed playbooks. Management highlighted complementary strengths, including CH Robinson's strength in LTL and RXO's strength in last mile and expedite, as well as RXO's healthy gross margins and CH Robinson's industry-leading cost-to-serve capabilities.
- Full-Year Operating Income Target MaintainedAfter the first nine months of the year, management remained confident in delivering full-year operating income within its existing target range. The bottom end of the range remains equivalent to at least $6 of diluted EPS, and the target range was unchanged from the level raised in October 2025 despite negative year-to-date market volume growth.
- Strong Shareholder Returns in Q3The company returned $289.1 million to shareholders in Q3, including $214.3 million of share repurchases and $74.8 million of dividends. This represented an increase of approximately 52% compared with the third quarter of the prior year.
- Liquidity and Investment ProfileCH Robinson ended Q3 with approximately $747 million of liquidity. Capital expenditures were $17.5 million in Q3, and full-year capital expenditures are expected to remain in the range of $65 million to $75 million. The company continues to target an investment-grade credit profile.
- Improved Market Pricing Environment for TruckloadU.S. DAT spot rates excluding fuel increased approximately 37% year over year in Q3, while load-to-truck ratios and tender rejection rates remained elevated. Management said these conditions created opportunities to capture transactional volumes at higher margins and reprice contractual business.
