Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. Record revenue, 15.2% comparable sales growth, 9.5% traffic growth, substantial EBITDA growth, margin expansion, strong Flower Child performance, successful development activity and increased rewards engagement significantly outweighed the North Italia sales and margin challenges, higher costs, measured fiscal 2027 assumptions and expected dilution.
For Q4 2026, the company anticipates total revenues between $1.04 billion and $1.05 billion, effective commodity inflation of low single digits, net total labor inflation of low to mid-single digits, G&A of approximately $68 million, depreciation of $30 million, preopening expenses of $13 million to support 13 openings, adjusted net income margin of about 5.8% at the midpoint of the sales range provided, a tax rate of approximately 14% to 15%, and diluted weighted average shares outstanding of approximately 52.5 million; it remains on track to open as many as 26 new restaurants in 2026 and anticipates approximately $210 million in cash CapEx. For fiscal 2027, it expects to open as many as 27 new restaurants, with roughly 3/4 of those openings planned for the second half of the year, generate total revenue of approximately $4.425 billion, incur total inflation across its commodity basket, labor and other operating expenses in the low- to mid-single-digit range, achieve modest leverage from G&A, depreciation and pre-opening expenses of approximately 10 to 20 basis points, and deliver full year net income margin of 6.0% to 6.1%, assuming a tax rate of approximately 12%, diluted weighted average shares outstanding of approximately 52 million, and approximately $220 million in cash CapEx, including roughly as many as 5 Cheesecake Factories, 4 to 5 North Italias, 11 to 13 Flower Childs and 6 to 7 FRC restaurants; 3% as sort of a run rate is good to use for next year, and on a normalized trajectory, the company would be talking about a 3% or plus comp.
- Record Revenue and Earnings PerformanceThird-quarter revenues exceeded $1.033 billion, marking the second consecutive quarter of record revenue and finishing meaningfully above the high end of the company’s outlook. Adjusted net income margin was 5.1%, adjusted diluted EPS was $1.02, quarterly net income was $61.3 million, and adjusted EBITDA increased 38% year-over-year to $98.7 million.
- Strong Cheesecake Factory Comparable Sales and TrafficThe Cheesecake Factory delivered 15.2% comparable sales growth, driven predominantly by 9.5% traffic growth, 2.4% pricing and a positive 3.3% mix. Traffic outperformed the Black Box casual dining index by 940 basis points, with improvement broad-based across geographies, dayparts, days of the week and channels.
- Record Annualized Unit Volumes and Margin ExpansionThe Cheesecake Factory generated annualized unit volumes of more than $13.9 million, another record in what is typically the slowest quarter of the year. Restaurant-level profit margin increased 240 basis points year-over-year to 18.7%.
- Cheesecake Factory Sales and Brand EngagementThird-quarter Cheesecake Factory restaurant sales were $754.4 million, up 16% from the prior year. Culinary innovation, including Bowls & Bites, the made-from-scratch menu, the rewards program, app adoption and social and digital marketing were cited as drivers of awareness, frequency and engagement, particularly among younger guests.
- Broad-Based Operational Execution and Guest LoyaltyManagement said operators continued to execute at a high level while maintaining near-record-high NPS scores despite higher volumes. The company reported that rewards-program acquisitions per week were twice as high as before the app launch, and guests participating in the rewards program have higher frequency.
- Stable Off-Premise and Additional CapacityOff-premise sales remained stable at approximately 21% of sales, and management said there was still capacity to grow delivery and off-premise business. Restaurants with annualized volumes in the low $20 millions were cited as evidence that capacity was not a constraint.
- Successful New Market Opening in WichitaThe latest Cheesecake Factory opening in Wichita generated tremendous guest enthusiasm and impressive sales during its first operating weeks. The approximately 6,500-square-foot format reinforced management’s confidence that smaller footprints can deliver the required sales and return on investment.
- Restaurant Development ProgressThe company opened six restaurants during the quarter: two Cheesecake Factories, one North Italia, one Flower Child and two FRC restaurants. It subsequently opened two Flower Child restaurants and one Henry. With 16 openings so far in 2026, the company remains on track to open as many as 26 restaurants in 2026 and plans to open as many as 27 in 2027.
- Flower Child Outperformance and Expansion PlansFlower Child comparable sales increased 11%, two-year comparable sales growth accelerated to 18%, annualized unit volumes reached $5.1 million and adjusted mature restaurant-level profit margin improved 280 basis points year-over-year to 20.2%. The company plans to open 11 to 13 Flower Child restaurants in 2027, roughly a 25% increase year-over-year at the midpoint.
- Flower Child Unit EconomicsManagement said Flower Child is generating approximately $5 million annualized unit volumes, approximately 20% mature margins and build costs of around $2.8 million to $3 million, producing what management described as strong cash-on-cash returns. Approximately 50% of next year’s openings are expected to be in new markets and 50% in existing markets.
- Growth Across Other ConceptsThird-quarter North Italia sales increased 11% to $93 million despite a 3% comparable sales decline. Other FRC sales totaled $90.3 million, up 16%, with sales per operating week of $120,100. Flower Child sales totaled $56.5 million, up 17%, with sales per operating week of $97,500. External bakery sales were $12.6 million.
- Improved Expense LeverageCost of sales declined 60 basis points year-over-year, labor as a percentage of sales declined 80 basis points, other operating expenses decreased 50 basis points, G&A declined 10 basis points and depreciation declined 20 basis points. The company attributed the improvements primarily to sales leverage, lower dairy costs, lower insurance and lower professional fees.
- Shareholder Returns and Financial FlexibilityThe company returned $16.6 million to shareholders during the quarter, including $14.2 million of dividends and approximately $2.4 million of share repurchases. It ended the quarter with $585.3 million of total available liquidity, including $249.3 million of cash and $336 million available on its revolving credit facility.
- Fourth-Quarter Revenue and Margin OutlookFor the fourth quarter, the company expects total revenues between $1.04 billion and $1.05 billion and adjusted net income margin of approximately 5.8% at the midpoint of the sales range. The company is modeling effective commodity inflation of low single digits, net total labor inflation of low to mid-single digits, approximately $68 million of G&A, $30 million of depreciation and $13 million of preopening expenses.
- Fiscal 2027 Growth and Margin OutlookFor fiscal 2027, the company is targeting approximately $4.425 billion of revenue, 27 new restaurant openings, total inflation across commodities, labor and other operating expenses in the low- to mid-single-digit range, and modest leverage from G&A, depreciation and preopening expenses of approximately 10 to 20 basis points. Full-year net income margin is expected to be 6.0% to 6.1%, consistent with the company’s long-term objective of 25 to 35 basis points of annual margin expansion.
- Capital Investment to Support ExpansionThe company anticipates approximately $210 million of cash CapEx in 2026 and approximately $220 million in 2027 to support new unit development and required restaurant maintenance. The 2027 development plan includes roughly as many as five Cheesecake Factories, four to five North Italias, 11 to 13 Flower Child restaurants and six to seven FRC restaurants.
- Menu Innovation and Social Media MomentumManagement said the company will maintain its cadence of two menu changes per year. The Cajun Salmon, which was already on the menu, gained significant social attention and generated disproportionate sales, while customers commonly paired it with established items such as Chicken Madeira and Avocado Eggrolls. Organic social engagement and culturally relevant content were cited as expanding brand awareness and attracting new guests.
