Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive. Management reported strong operating income, favorable underlying underwriting performance, growth in excess and surplus lines, Cincinnati Re, Cincinnati Global, life insurance, and investment income, alongside a strong capital position and ongoing AI deployment. These strengths outweighed the higher catastrophe losses, moderating premium growth, competitive pressure, workers' compensation challenges, negative quarterly value creation ratio, and bond portfolio losses.
Management provided “No real guidance going forward” on commercial-lines growth, saying its guidance for growth is “profit first” and that it will continue “blocking and tackling”; it plans to keep the commercial-lines expense ratio “under the 30%,” maintain reserves in “the upper half of the actuarial range,” and remain prudent on workers’ compensation, whose accident year loss ratio is 95.8% and which is “a little less than 5%” of commercial-lines net written premiums. Management said rate is meeting or exceeding loss trend on the other major lines of business, other than workers’ compensation and with general liability “under pressure,” while commercial lines and excess and surplus lines renewal price increases averaged increases in the low single-digit percentage range, homeowner increases were in the high single-digit percentage range, and personal auto increases were in the mid-single-digit range. It also said more than 50% of commercial-lines package policies are on a three-year basis and AI-enabled capabilities are expected to accelerate quote delivery by more than 30% across commercial lines and excess and surplus lines businesses.
- Strong Net Income and Operating PerformanceThird-quarter net income was $459 million. Non-GAAP operating income was $443 million, down only $6 million from a year ago despite catastrophe losses being $146 million higher on an after-tax basis.
- Underlying Underwriting Performance Remained StrongThe third-quarter property-casualty combined ratio was 90.9%. Although it increased 2.7 percentage points year over year, the increase included 7.0 points from higher catastrophe losses. The current accident year combined ratio before catastrophe losses for the first nine months was 86.5%, improving from 86.7% a year earlier.
- Disciplined Premium Growth and PricingConsolidated property-casualty net written premiums grew 2% in the quarter. Growth moderated as expected due to pricing discipline, careful risk selection, and policy-by-policy segmentation. Commercial and excess and surplus lines renewal increases averaged in the low single-digit percentage range, homeowner increases were in the high single-digit percentage range, and personal auto increases were in the mid-single-digit range.
- Excess and Surplus Lines GrowthExcess and surplus lines net written premiums grew 5% and produced an excellent 89.4% combined ratio.
- Cincinnati Re and Cincinnati Global ExpansionCincinnati Re net written premiums increased 34% in the third quarter and Cincinnati Global grew 13%. Cincinnati Global maintained an impressive 70.7% combined ratio, while both businesses contributed meaningfully to premium growth and diversification.
- Life Insurance Subsidiary GrowthThe life insurance subsidiary delivered another solid quarter, with net income growth of 11%. Term life insurance earned premiums grew 2%.
- AI and Data Technology DeploymentThe company continues to prioritize generative and agentic AI applications intended to improve associate efficiency and effectiveness. Its AI Center of Excellence has developed seven proprietary intelligent assistants for underwriting, claims, loss control, and other areas. AI-enabled workflows for new business submissions have accelerated quote delivery by more than 30% across commercial lines and excess and surplus lines.
- Investment Income GrowthThird-quarter investment income grew 10%, driven by strong cash flow from insurance operations. Bond interest income increased 11%, and net purchases of fixed maturity securities totaled $1.1 billion in the quarter and $2 billion for the first nine months.
- Strong Operating Cash FlowCash flow from operating activities was $2.1 billion for the first nine months of 2026, a decrease of less than 1% from a year ago, and continued to support investment income growth.
- Favorable Prior-Year Reserve DevelopmentThe company recorded $94 million of property-casualty net favorable reserve development on prior accident years in the third quarter, benefiting the combined ratio by 3.6 percentage points. For the first nine months, favorable development included $203 million for 2025 and $70 million for 2024.
- Strong Capital Position and Financial FlexibilityParent company cash and marketable securities were $6.1 billion at quarter end, debt to total capital remained under 10%, and GAAP consolidated shareholders' equity was $16 billion. Quarter-end book value was $105.42 per share. The company paid $142 million in shareholder dividends.
- Long-Term Growth Track RecordManagement stated that personal lines net written premiums have doubled over the last four years and tripled over the last 10 years. Company net written premiums doubled from the end of 2018 through 2025, with a five-year compound annual growth rate of 10.4% and a 10-year compound annual growth rate of 8.6%. The combined ratio over that period was in the mid-90s%, with no year above 100%.
- Three-Year Commercial PoliciesMore than 50%, or a majority, of commercial-lines package policies are written on a three-year basis. Management said these policies outperform one-year policies from an underwriting perspective and can protect the company in a down market by locking in rates.
- Commercial Auto ImprovementManagement said the commercial auto book is in a good position after actions taken since 2016 and 2017 to address trends and inflation. The company reported good results throughout the year and intends to remain prudent in the line.
- Agency Appointment StrategyThe company is adding agencies while maintaining a consistent approach to agency quality and efficiency. It seeks professional agencies that are pillars in their communities and provides newly appointed agencies with the same field-team care, service, and relationship-building associated with the Cincinnati experience.
- Private Client and High-Net-Worth PositioningApproximately 60% of personal-lines business is now high net worth. Management said Cincinnati is considered a premier private-client underwriter, can write some of the largest ultra-high-net-worth accounts in the United States, and expects private client or high-net-worth business to become a larger portion of the portfolio.
