Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. Management highlighted record orders and revenue, broad-based organic growth, strong Vacuum Technique and Power Technique performance, improved profitability, solid cash flow, successful acquisitions, and confidence in semiconductor and gas-and-process opportunities. These strengths outweighed the explicitly discussed challenges, including Industrial Technique restructuring, Compressor Technique margin pressure, supply-chain inflation, ramp-up costs, pricing constraints, European macro weakness, and uncertainty related to seasonality and preordering.
For the next quarter, the company’s forward-looking statement is sequential guidance referring to customer activity, excluding large orders, potential FX swings and seasonality; for most segments, “we believe the activity will remain at the current level,” while the semiconductor market remains “very positive” but the Q3-to-Q4 seasonality is hard to predict. The effective tax rate is expected to be “slightly higher,” “maybe somewhere around the lines of 22.5%”; net financial items are likely to be “on a similar level going forward next quarter”; and for Q4, the currency effect is expected to turn “slightly positive,” with “somewhere around SEK 0.5 billion” likely. Vacuum Technique should continue to see “some level of margin expansion,” but “not as much as we have seen in the past few quarters,” with “a little bit of caution around that margin expansion,” while Compressor Technique pricing actions remain “on the table,” although the company “cannot guarantee that next quarter is going to be changed.”
- Record Orders and RevenueOrders received reached a record SEK 52.3 billion, representing 25% organic growth and 29% total growth including 3% structural growth from acquisitions and currency support. Revenue reached a record SEK 47.9 billion, with 11% organic growth.
- Strong Broad-Based Order GrowthAll four business areas delivered organic order growth, with three achieving double-digit organic growth. Vacuum Technique was outstanding, while most divisions reported good organic growth. Service activity also continued to grow.
- Improved Profitability and Solid Cash FlowThe reported profit margin was 20.8%, while the underlying margin was 21.3% after items affecting comparability. Operating profit was SEK 7.7 billion, and management highlighted sequential margin improvement, record revenue levels, and solid operating cash flow.
- Strong Regional Order DevelopmentOrders grew organically across all regions: Asia increased 39%, North America increased 39%, Europe increased 8%, South America increased 4%, and Africa and the Middle East increased 21%.
- Vacuum Technique SurgeVacuum Technique delivered 82% organic order growth, driven primarily by strong semiconductor demand, with additional positive development in industrial and scientific vacuum. Revenue increased 28% organically, profitability reached 22.2%, and return on capital employed improved.
- Vacuum Technique Capacity and Market PositionThe company reported the highest capacity of dry vacuum production, continued scaling, and readiness to add capacity if market demand increases. Management said it remains in a strong competitive position in Asia, China, and North America, supported by local setups across continents.
- Industrial Technique Growth and Automation ProgressIndustrial Technique achieved 12% organic order growth, led by general industry, electronics, aerospace, defense, and automotive equipment, particularly in the U.S. Automation initiatives and prior acquisitions were described as producing good results, especially in the U.S.
- Power Technique Growth and Profitability ImprovementPower Technique delivered 13% organic order growth, with improved demand across divisions and particularly strong development in the U.S. Specialty rental and service continued to grow, revenue reached a record level, and profitability improved from Q1 onward to 18.3%.
- Compressor Technique Continued GrowthCompressor Technique achieved 6% organic order growth and 5% organic revenue growth. Gas and process compressors performed well, with continued contributions from LNG and heat pumps for district heating. Management also reported a strong gas and process project pipeline and continued service growth.
- Compressor Technique Innovation and Strategic AcquisitionCompressor Technique continued investing in technologies, including integrated cooling and compressor solutions intended to provide customer savings. The acquisition of Euroklimat adds cooling and low-temperature heat-pump capabilities and is intended to open new markets.
- Successful AcquisitionsAtlas Copco closed four acquisitions during the quarter. The NTE acquisition in Power Technique was performing well, while Euroklimat was described as strategically important for entering new markets.
- Strong Profit for the Period and Tax BenefitProfit for the period was SEK 7.7 billion versus SEK 6.7 billion a year ago, an increase of roughly SEK 1 billion. The effective tax rate was 21%, helped by tax credits that lowered the rate more than initially anticipated.
- Healthy Working Capital and Cash ConversionDespite strong growth and production ramp-up, the change in working capital was limited to minus SEK 87 million. Management said operating cash flow was not a record, but was 'super solid' for the third quarter given the current growth environment.
- Positive Foreign-Exchange Outlook for Q4Although currency had a negative effect in the third quarter, management expects the bottom-line currency effect to turn slightly positive in Q4, estimated at around SEK 0.5 billion, all things being equal.
- Positive Near-Term Activity OutlookManagement expects activity in most segments to remain at the current level and remains very positive about the semiconductor market. It also described the environment for gas and process as positive, despite expected quarter-to-quarter variations.
- Product and Sustainability InnovationVacuum Technique launched a redesigned industrial vacuum pump with improved energy efficiency. Industrial Technique introduced a bolting solution with improved safety and repeatability through process control, while Power Technique continued investing in the TwinPower generator, designed to reduce fuel consumption in variable-load applications.
- Market Share and Competitive PositionManagement said Compressor Technique was gaining market share in certain areas, including China, and was not losing market share in Europe. In Vacuum Technique, management said the company was involved with new semiconductor process-tool players and was well positioned to participate in new fabs and expansions.
