Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly optimistic. Management reported record revenue, 27% adjusted EPS growth, substantial free cash flow improvement, higher EPS and free cash flow guidance, stronger leverage, and significant growth in semiconductor, microgrid, data center, aviation, and manufacturing-related activities. The main challenges were Business and Industry revenue declines, Northern California market pressure, aviation margin concessions tied to elevated fuel costs, Technical Solutions project deferrals, and higher interest and acquisition-related amortization expense. Management characterized the challenges as understood and actively managed, with confidence in fourth-quarter improvement and continued fiscal 2027 growth.
ABM raised its fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS range to $3.95 to $4.10, maintained full year organic revenue growth guidance of 3% to 4% and expects to be toward the higher end of that range; Aviation, M&D, and Technical Solutions are expected to grow above that range, while B&I and education are projected to be below that range, with WGNSTAR expected to deliver approximately 1 point of additional revenue growth, bringing total growth to the high end of the 4% to 5% range. Fiscal 2026 segment operating margin is expected to be 7.7% to 7.8%, fourth quarter margin is projected to be meaningfully above the high end of that range, interest expense remains at approximately $110 million, normalized tax rates are expected to be 29% to 30%, normalized free cash flow is expected to be approximately $285 million before the impact of transformation and integration costs, Final RavenVault earnout, and any incremental restructuring, and reported free cash flow is expected to be approximately $210 million versus the prior forecast of $185 million. Fourth quarter ATS is expected to have double digit organic growth and significant sequential increases in revenue, operating profit, and margin; B&I is expected to return to organic growth around the middle of fiscal 2027, M&D is positioned to sustain strong organic growth into fiscal 2027 and beyond, education is expected to have low single digit organic growth as ABM moves into fiscal 2027, and Technical Solutions is expected to have another year of strong growth in fiscal 2027.
- Record Quarterly RevenueThird-quarter revenue grew 4.2% year over year to an all-time quarterly record of slightly above $2.3 billion, consisting of 2.1% organic growth and a 2.1% contribution from acquisitions, primarily WGNSTAR.
- Strong Earnings GrowthNet income increased 19% to $49 million, or $0.84 per diluted share, while adjusted net income increased 19% to $61.5 million, or $1.04 per diluted share. Adjusted EPS growth was 27%, supported by higher segment operating profit, lower tax expense, reduced ongoing corporate costs, and share repurchase activity.
- Adjusted EBITDA and Sequential Margin ImprovementAdjusted EBITDA increased $13.8 million, or 11%, to $139.6 million. Segment operating margin increased 40 basis points sequentially to 7.7%, reflecting operational efficiencies and lower corporate costs.
- Significant Free Cash Flow ImprovementThird-quarter cash from operations was $146.8 million and free cash flow was $128.4 million. For the first nine months, cash from operations was $275 million and free cash flow was $199.6 million, versus $101 million and $42.4 million, respectively, in the prior-year period—an improvement of over $150 million in year-to-date free cash flow.
- Raised Free Cash Flow OutlookThe company raised fiscal 2026 normalized free cash flow expectations to approximately $285 million before transformation and integration costs, the final RavenVault earnout, and any incremental restructuring. Reported free cash flow is now expected to be approximately $210 million, up from the prior forecast of $185 million, a $25 million improvement driven by strong working capital performance.
- Raised Adjusted EPS OutlookThe fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS range was raised to $3.95 to $4.10. The increase reflects strong third-quarter performance, nine-month results, and confidence in delivering fourth-quarter expectations.
- Aviation GrowthAviation revenue grew 12% year over year to $328.1 million, supported by healthy travel demand and the continued ramp of the Heathrow contract. The company said aviation demand and its pipeline remain strong.
- Manufacturing and Distribution ExpansionManufacturing and Distribution revenue increased 18% year over year to $481 million, including 8% organic growth and 10% growth from the WGNSTAR acquisition. Organic growth was driven by continued client expansions, particularly in technology and semiconductor-related activity.
- Education Operating PerformanceEducation revenue rose slightly to $235.8 million. Operating profit increased 9% to $23 million and operating margin expanded 70 basis points to 9.7%, driven by enhanced labor efficiency and effective escalation management.
- Growth in Semiconductor, Microgrid, and Data Center BusinessesDuring the first nine months, semiconductor, microgrid, and data center businesses generated nearly $775 million of revenue, growing 26% organically and approximately 40% including WGNSTAR. Together, they represented more than 11% of ABM's revenue and carried a double-digit blended operating margin.
- Semiconductor Momentum and WGNSTAR Cross-SellingSemiconductor revenue grew 65% organically during the first nine months and more than doubled when including almost two quarters of WGNSTAR. WGNSTAR expanded ABM's specialized technical capabilities inside semiconductor fabrication facilities, and management said two or three cross-sells had already been completed.
- Microgrid Business ExpansionIncluding battery energy storage systems, the microgrid business has approximately quadrupled in size since ABM entered the market in 2022. Revenue grew 17% organically during the first nine months, with demand supported by client investments in power, resiliency, and redundancy.
- Army Corps of Engineers Microgrid ContractABM expects to finalize a contract to build a microgrid for primary backup power for the Army Corps of Engineers through a joint venture with a strategic partner. The total value to ABM is approximately $20 million, with execution expected in calendar 2027.
- Data Center Pipeline GrowthData center revenue grew 8% organically year to date, while management said the current growth rate does not reflect the opportunity ahead. The pipeline was described as a multiple of its level at the same time last year, with colocation customers identified as the fastest and most robust area of near-term pipeline growth.
- Technical Solutions Backlog and Fourth-Quarter RecoveryTechnical Solutions revenue increased 4% year over year to $259.9 million, including 2% organic growth and 2% from acquisitions. Management said approximately $15 million of deferred projects were largely expected to land in the fourth quarter, with some activity moving into the first quarter of next year, and that the projects were already being worked on. The company expects double-digit organic growth in ATS in the fourth quarter and significant sequential increases in revenue, operating profit, and margin.
- Improved Balance Sheet and LiquidityABM achieved its goal of reducing total debt to pro forma adjusted EBITDA below 3 times, ending the quarter at 2.9 times, earlier than originally planned. Available liquidity was $606 million, including $110 million in cash and cash equivalents. The company also closed a $300 million accounts receivable facility, diversifying funding sources and reducing its marginal borrowing cost relative to the existing revolving credit facility.
- Progress in ERP Stabilization and Working CapitalManagement said working capital management and ERP stabilization drove the year-to-date cash flow improvement. The new system enabled the company to accelerate collections during the quarter, which management described as another step toward transformation stability.
- Resilient Core Business and Long-Term Growth PlatformsManagement described the core business as resilient and said investments in semiconductor, microgrids, and data centers had created meaningful growth platforms in markets where demand is expected to remain strong for years. The company plans to continue improving margins and cash flow and to allocate capital with discipline.
- Pricing DisciplineABM said its pricing council and contract hurdle rates support discipline on medium-sized and large contracts. Management also said annual wage escalations remain a historical strength and that it does not see market dynamics that would hurt the company from a pricing standpoint.
- Aviation Mix DiversificationApproximately 60% of aviation revenue comes from airports. Management said a 70% airport and 30% airline mix over the next three to five years would be viewed favorably, supported by expected infrastructure activity and demand for enhanced airport services.
- Business and Industry Margin ImprovementAlthough Business and Industry revenue declined 2.6% in the third quarter, operating profit increased to $75 million and margin expanded 30 basis points year over year to 7.4%, reflecting cost actions, operational improvements, and the lapping of certain lower-margin contracts.
- Business and Industry Revenue DeclineBusiness and Industry revenue declined 2.6% in the third quarter, driven by the second-quarter exit of a large U.K.-based client and certain other client exits, particularly on the West Coast. Management expects revenue trends to be similar in the fourth quarter.
- Northern California Market PressureThe West Coast, particularly Northern California, remains challenging. Management attributed the pressure to competitors pricing at levels ABM is unwilling to accept, alongside continued work-from-home trends. The company said Southern California pressures had stabilized and that Northern California could improve by mid-next year if the Southern California trend holds.
- Aviation Margin PressureAviation operating profit was $18.4 million and operating margin was 5.6%, compared with $19.7 million and 6.8% in the prior-year period. Profit and margin were pressured by airline clients seeking cost relief from service providers in response to elevated fuel costs.
- Manufacturing and Distribution Margin DeclineManufacturing and Distribution operating margin declined to 8.4% from 8.9% in the prior-year period, despite operating profit increasing to $40.5 million from $36.4 million. The margin change reflected ongoing investments in sales and industry expertise talent and nearly $4 million of incremental amortization expense related to WGNSTAR.
- Technical Solutions Project DeferralsTechnical Solutions revenue was below expectations because certain projects from an important client were deferred. The company said the deferrals were principally a timing issue, that the client prioritized other capital projects during the quarter, and that the delays were not driven by interest rates, supply chain constraints, or permitting challenges.
- Higher Interest ExpenseQuarterly interest expense increased $4.2 million year over year to $29.5 million, reflecting larger average debt balances driven by the WGNSTAR acquisition.
- Higher WGNSTAR-Related AmortizationHigher amortization expense related to the WGNSTAR acquisition affected segment margins. Management cited approximately $12 million of intangible amortization allocated to fiscal 2026, with only a modest falloff expected next year.
- Broader Economic UncertaintyWhile management expressed confidence in the relative health of its end markets, it also said it remained mindful of broader economic uncertainty. Fiscal 2026 organic revenue growth guidance remains 3% to 4%, with Business and Industry and Education projected to grow below that range.
