Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q2 2026
Earnings Call Date:Sep 03, 2026|% Change Since:-64.29%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Neutral

The call presented meaningful operational and strategic progress, including record first-half retail sales, a 39% expansion in the retail footprint, improved reported operating and net losses, new product launches and a strengthened capital structure. However, profitability remained weak, adjusted EBITDA losses increased, second-quarter sales and revenue declined, cash declined amid substantial operating outflow, full-year volume guidance was reduced to low to mid-single-digit growth, and the U.S. regulatory decision created an estimated USD 130 million restructuring impact and prevented model year 2027 vehicle sales in the U.S. Overall, the positive commercial and balance-sheet developments were balanced by significant financial and market challenges.

Company Guidance

Polestar updated its full year volume outlook to low to mid-single-digit growth; Polestar 4 SUV customer deliveries will start in the fourth quarter and ramp up into next year, while carbon credit sales are expected to follow the same pattern with revenue weighted towards the second half of the year. For 2027, Polestar said more would come on precise volume numbers, with Polestar 4 with the 2 variants and Polestar 2 expected to be the dominant volume drivers, and Polestar 5 less important in terms of overall volume. Entering H2, the company said it should expect a significant reduction in terms of cash burn, having cut about 1/3 its CapEx spending, and it will sell model year '26 in the U.S. but is not able to sell model year '27.

  • Record First-Half Retail SalesPolestar delivered a record first half with retail sales of 30,423 cars, supported by the transition to an active selling model, retail network expansion, and stronger contribution from the Polestar 4 coupe, the company's best-selling car.
  • Polestar 4 Drove Volume and Mix ImprovementThe Polestar 4 coupe accounted for 2/3 of first-half volume and supported a carline mix evolution toward higher-margin models. Management said Polestar 4 is becoming increasingly dominant in the portfolio.
  • Retail Network ExpansionPolestar operated 235 sales points and 178 retail partners across 28 markets, with its retail footprint expanding 39% year-on-year. The company opened 24 new sales points and signed 20 new retailers in the first half, primarily in Europe.
  • Strong European and South Korean PerformanceEurope delivered 78% of total first-half volume, with particularly strong performance led by the U.K., Germany and Southern Europe. In Asia Pacific, South Korea was a notable area of strength.
  • Operating Loss and Net Loss Improved Year-on-YearFor the first six months, operating loss narrowed 43% to USD 629 million and net loss narrowed 29% to USD 842 million. The improvement was mainly due to the USD 724 million net impairment expense recognized in the first half of 2025, with no impairment expense recognized in H1 2026.
  • Reported Gross Margin Improved Versus Prior YearFirst-half reported gross margin improved by 41 percentage points to negative 8%, compared with negative 49% in the comparable period, which was impacted by the USD 724 million net impairment expense.
  • Cost Discipline Reduced Selected Operating ExpensesContinuous cost discipline and lower headcount spend contributed to lower general and administrative expenses. Research and development expenses declined to USD 15 million from USD 31 million, driven by reduced headcount and spending on new programs with a higher capitalization rate.
  • Polestar 4 SUV Order Books OpenedPolestar opened order books for the Polestar 4 SUV, priced from EUR 57,900. The vehicle includes vehicle-to-load capability, Google Gemini integration and one of the lowest carbon footprints in the portfolio. More than 900 cars were already on their way from the factory in Busan, South Korea, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter.
  • Positive Early Feedback for New ModelsManagement reported very good early feedback for the Polestar 4 SUV from fleet and private customers. The company is also preparing for the first customer deliveries of Polestar 5, with journalist feedback described as exceptional.
  • Capital Structure StrengthenedGeely Sweden and Volvo Cars converted approximately USD 640 million of loans, including accrued interest, into equity. Volvo Cars extended the maturity of its remaining USD 660 million shareholder loan to December 2031. Polestar also raised USD 1.2 billion of equity over the last 15 months and renewed or increased USD 1.7 billion of banking facilities during the first half.
  • Covenant Compliance and Planned Cash-Burn ReductionPolestar was in compliance with all covenants at the end of the second quarter. Management said capital expenditure spending had been cut by about 1/3 and expected a significant reduction in cash burn entering the second half, supported by the Polestar 4 coupe and SUV and working-capital initiatives.
  • Broader 2027 Product PositioningManagement said the Polestar 4 SUV and the Polestar 2 successor will enter larger market segments with greater volume potential, while Polestar 5 will remain primarily important for brand positioning. The company described itself as cautiously optimistic about 2027, subject to market conditions.
