Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was positive on integration execution, cost savings, margin expansion, subscription scale, cash resources and the strategic opportunity represented by Project Helix. However, the company continues to face meaningful top-line pressure, including a normalized revenue decline, consumer weakness, enterprise retention below its long-term ambition and a 2027 baseline calling for flat to modestly declining enterprise revenue and a low double-digit consumer decline. The strong operational and financial execution outweighed the stated growth challenges, but management's outlook remained cautious.
For Q4 2026, Coursera expects revenue of $358 million to $366 million and adjusted EBITDA between $55 million and $59 million, achieving the 16% Q4 margin target established in June; for full year 2026, it anticipates as-reported revenue of $1.229 billion to $1.237 billion, equivalent to $1.503 billion to $1.511 billion on a normalized basis, and remains confident in the approximately 14% full year adjusted EBITDA margin target. For 2027, the company is not providing formal guidance today, but its starting assumption is that each segment's fourth quarter revenue trajectory is broadly representative of its normalized full year 2027 growth rate, implying approximately flat to modestly declining revenue for Enterprise and a low double-digit year-over-year decline for Consumer, with potential revenue dis-synergies, no cross-sell contribution, and no material revenue contribution from Project Helix assumed. Project Helix is expected to begin rolling out in 2027, targeting broad enterprise availability in the first half of 2027, while the full year 2027 adjusted EBITDA margin target will be provided next quarter; the company also expects to have more than $150 million of annualized gross cost savings by year-end supporting the $115 million annual run rate net synergy target, on track to deliver it just 8 months after close compared with the original 24-month plan.
- Q3 Revenue and Adjusted EBITDA DeliveryCoursera delivered Q3 revenue of $377 million and nearly $62 million of adjusted EBITDA. Reported adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by more than 800 basis points year-over-year to approximately 16%.
- Accelerated Integration and Synergy ProgressThe company simplified the combined organization, integrated its go-to-market teams and aligned around a unified product vision. It expects to have more than $150 million of annualized gross cost savings in place by year-end and remains on track to deliver the $115 million annual run rate net synergy target in 8 months after close, versus the original 24-month plan.
- Improved Revenue Mix and Gross MarginsEnterprise and consumer subscriptions represented nearly 90% of total revenue, up 500 basis points year-over-year on a normalized basis. Gross profit was $214 million, gross margin was 64%, and the company cited Udemy's higher-margin enterprise revenue and continued rate improvements as drivers.
- Operating Expense Efficiency and ProfitabilityOperating expenses were $186 million, or 49% of revenue, down 120 basis points year-over-year due to sales and marketing efficiency and reduced duplication across corporate functions. Net income was $57 million, or 15.2% of revenue, and adjusted EBITDA was nearly $62 million, or 16.3% of revenue.
- Enterprise Revenue Growth and Gross MarginEnterprise revenue was $201 million, up 214% year-over-year as reported and 2% on a normalized basis. Enterprise segment gross profit was $163 million and segment gross margin was 81%, benefiting from stronger content economics.
- Consumer Subscription ScaleConsumer subscription revenue was approximately $131 million, representing more than 70% of consumer revenue. The company ended the quarter with more than 1.6 million paid subscribers, up 30% year-over-year, and stated that Coursera Plus continued to perform well across monthly and annual offerings.
- Strong Cash Position and Share RepurchasesCoursera ended the quarter with approximately $776 million of unrestricted cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities and no debt. It repurchased approximately 18 million shares for just over $100 million in Q3, bringing total repurchases under the $500 million authorization to more than $215 million.
- Project Helix Product StrategyProject Helix was introduced as an adaptive, AI-native skills platform designed to connect trusted learning with verified proof of skills. Its planned capabilities include skills intelligence tied to business priorities, personalized and applied learning, graded assessments, hands-on practice and recognized credentials.
- Planned Helix Enterprise AvailabilityThe company is taking a phased approach to Project Helix with selected customers and partners and is targeting broad enterprise availability in the first half of 2027. Management said Helix investment is already contained within current operating expenses and does not anticipate increases in OpEx due to Helix.
- AI and Human-Skills Learning DemandAcross the combined platforms, GenAI enrollment increased from 25 per minute in 2025 to more than 40 per minute in 2026, while critical-thinking enrollments grew over 100% year-over-year. Management said learners are building both technical AI skills and human skills.
- Expanded Learning EcosystemCoursera and Udemy reached more than 310 million learners, more than 1.6 million paid subscribers and nearly 12,000 enterprise customers. The ecosystem includes nearly 100,000 Udemy instructors and relationships with more than 425 universities, companies and professional institutions.
- New Partners, Certificates and ContentAt Forward, the company announced 16 new university and industry partners and 25 new professional certificates, including partnerships with Harvard Business School Online, GitHub, the American Medical Association and Taipei Medical University. Anthropic nearly doubled its Coursera catalog with 10 new courses, and a Udemy instructor's Claude specialization became one of Coursera's top new launches of 2026.
- New Product Capabilities and Platform IntegrationsThe company is adding graded role play and Graded Labs to provide evidence of demonstrated skills, and integrations with ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot are designed to identify learning moments and direct users to relevant courses, videos or guided practice. AI Series learning paths launched in data analytics, business leadership, software development and cybersecurity, with expansion planned for Q4.
- Fourth-Quarter and Full-Year EBITDA TargetsFor Q4, Coursera expects adjusted EBITDA of $55 million to $59 million, achieving the 16% margin target established in June. For full-year 2026, it remains confident in an approximately 14% adjusted EBITDA margin target.
- Absence of Revenue Dis-Synergies to DateManagement said it has not seen any revenue dis-synergies in 2026, including among customers purchasing both platforms and renewing after the transaction. The potential dis-synergies included in the 2027 outlook remain a theoretical calculation.
- Large-Enterprise Retention StrengthManagement said net retention is significantly higher among larger enterprise customers than the overall 93% average, particularly in North America. Coursera for Campus and Coursera for Government also continued to grow at healthy rates, although they remain smaller portions of the enterprise business.
