Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive, characterized by record first-half operating profit, improving Asset Management and Life performance, strong net inflows, growing capital-light earnings, robust solvency, and confidence in achieving the group's 2027 and 2030 targets. The main negatives were lower operating and underlying capital generation, declining annuity profit, a 1-basis-point private markets margin reduction, higher year-on-year Asset Management costs, and a stated future ground-rent impact. Overall, the highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.
M&G said it is on track to deliver low double-digit profit growth this year, achieve the GBP 2.7 billion cumulative capital generation target, and reach a 70% cost-income ratio by the end of next year, with Asset Management costs expected to stay in line with the first six months of the year and corporate center costs roughly GBP 10 million higher; it expects further improvements in operating leverage, management actions of GBP 100 million-GBP 200 million annually, at least GBP 50 billion attracted through With-Profits solutions by 2030 generating at least GBP 100 million of annual operating profit by 2030, BPA+ sales to scale at least by 50% this year and next year toward target volumes of GBP 3 billion-GBP 4 billion in 2027, and PruFund to deliver improved inflows in the second half, while it expects to operate above the top of its target Solvency II range over the medium term, with leverage guidance of around 30%, and a modest GBP 10 million AOP impact from ground rents at the end of 2028 onwards.
- Record Operating ProfitGroup adjusted operating profit increased 15% year-on-year to GBP 435 million, the best first-half result since M&G's 2019 listing. Asset Management earnings rose 24%, while Life profits increased 9%.
- Strong Net Flows from Open BusinessThe group delivered GBP 2.4 billion of net flows from open business, an increase of GBP 300 million year-on-year, despite a volatile macro environment.
- Higher-Quality, Capital-Light EarningsCapital-light earnings represented 80% of total operating profit, up from 73% last year. Management expects this proportion to rise further as the majority of annuity business is written through the With-Profits Fund.
- BPA+ Sales MomentumSince its launch in February, the new With-Profits BPA+ product generated GBP 1.7 billion of sales, already exceeding last year's total annuity volumes. M&G expects sales to scale by at least 50% this year and is targeting GBP 3 billion-GBP 4 billion of volumes in 2027.
- Asset Management Net Inflows and Revenue QualityAsset Management delivered GBP 2.2 billion of net inflows in H1, generating GBP 13 million of annualized net new revenues. July added a further GBP 1 billion of net inflows.
- Asset Management GrowthAssets under management increased 17% over three years to GBP 356 billion. External assets rose 29% to GBP 189 billion, international assets increased by more than 40%, and international assets now account for nearly 60% of total external assets.
- Improved Asset Management ProfitabilityAsset Management adjusted operating profit increased 24% to GBP 159 million. Fee-related earnings rose 17%, while revenue increased 10% in the first six months. The cost-to-income ratio reduced by 2 percentage points to 73% for the third consecutive year.

The business has a GBP 7.8 billion capital queue in private assets, with strong appetite for structured credit and renewed interest in real estate.

The U.K. institutional segment delivered GBP 800 million of net inflows for the second consecutive period, while international institutional clients generated net inflows for the fourth consecutive year.
- Life Segment Growth EnginesPruFund operating profit increased 15% to GBP 129 million, and traditional With-Profits profit rose 14% year-on-year to GBP 137 million. Combined PruFund and traditional With-Profits customer contractual service margin was GBP 4.2 billion.
- Retail Life MomentumThe retail fixed-term annuity generated more than GBP 100 million of net inflows in its first 12 months. Customers received an additional 45 basis points bonus on their investments, and combined PruFund and fixed-term annuity retail net flows improved by more than GBP 500 million year-on-year.
- Expansion of With-Profits FundM&G expects to attract at least GBP 50 billion to the group through With-Profits solutions by 2030. These assets are expected to generate at least GBP 100 million of annual operating profit by 2030 across Life and Asset Management.
- Daiichi Life PartnershipDaiichi Life became M&G's largest shareholder with a 15.7% position. As Daiichi's preferred European asset manager, M&G has received more than GBP 1 billion of allocations to its investment solutions, including GBP 1.1 billion of inflows since the partnership was signed.
- Capital Generation and Solvency StrengthCapital generation remains on track toward the GBP 2.7 billion cumulative target. - Transformation Savings and AI AdoptionM&G completed the first phase of its transformation program and has delivered more than GBP 250 million of savings since 2023. AI is being used to improve BPA pricing speed, institutional RFP responses, customer service, policy management, research, and asset sourcing.
- Progress Toward Efficiency TargetManagement remains committed to reducing the Asset Management cost-to-income ratio to 70% by the end of 2027. The ratio has improved from 79% three years ago to 73%, with a 2-percentage-point annual improvement over that period.
- Positive Full-Year OutlookManagement expects low double-digit profit growth for the year and stated that it remains confident in sustaining positive momentum in the second half.
